President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has canceled his scheduled appearance at Miami’s ongoing Bitcoin 2022 conference.
The Bitcoin-friendly president announced via Twitter as published by Bloomberg. He stated that his reason for canceling his appearance at the conference was due to unforeseen circumstances in the country that require his attention as president.
“I have just made the decision to cancel my participation in the conference due to unforeseen circumstances in my home country that require my full attention as president,” president Bukele said.
Bukele Focused on Crisis in El Salvador
While president Bukele did not clearly state why he will no longer appear at the Bitcoin 2022 conference, it is evident that his reason for the cancelation cannot be far from what is currently happening in El Salvador.
The country has been in a severe crisis against criminal gangs referred to as “maras.” This criminal organization was responsible for the death of 62 people on March 27, 2022, an unfortunate incident that prompted El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly to suspend constitutional rights for 30 days.
With the country’s intensifying battle against local maras, a total of 6,894 gang members have been arrested in the last 12 days by local police.
Bukele Supportive of Bitcoin
Recall that president Bukele is among the Bitcoin proponents who disclosed that they would be attending the Bitcoin 2022 conference.
The president was scheduled to speak at the conference today. He had teased his followers on Twitter that he would be making an important Bitcoin-related announcement when he took to the podium today.
Following recent developments, the announcement will be communicated via a different medium.
Meanwhile, during the Bitcoin 2021 conference, Bukele disclosed that El Salvador would be adopting Bitcoin as legal tender, and the country has not looked back after the announcement.
Although global financial institutions slammed Bukele for El Salvador’s decision to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, he has continued to throw his weight behind the top asset class.
