Canadian professional basketball star Tristan Thompson has revealed that his teammates are growing increasingly curious about cryptocurrencies like XRP.

In a recent interview, Thompson shared that his teammates have been showing interest in XRP and frequently discuss the asset in group chats. According to him, they often ask whether they should buy more XRP whenever its price rallies.

However, rather than promoting quick trades or hype-driven purchases, Thompson encourages them to accumulate XRP and hold it with a long-term mindset. He urges them to apply the same dedication that helped them succeed in professional basketball to their cryptocurrency investments.

“I tell my teammates to hold for the long-term. Y’all should think the same way you bet on yourself to get to the NBA. That’s how you need to bet on these coins,” he remarked.

Support for Crypto

Besides XRP, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ star also advised his teammates to bet on the broader crypto market and the future of digital finance. He envisions a future where people will no longer rely on traditional banking institutions but instead manage money through digital wallets.

Thompson emphasized that this shift will be transformative and will impact how future generations interact with money. His comments highlight the growing influence of crypto in professional sports, where athletes are increasingly becoming both investors and advocates for digital assets.

Thompson has been a vocal advocate for cryptocurrency for a few years now. He also hosts a podcast dedicated to the topic of crypto. He admitted that at times he wished he had embraced digital assets earlier, particularly before signing his $82 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015.

Recently, Thompson reflected that pushing for his signing bonus to be paid in Bitcoin instead of cash would have gone down as one of the greatest gambles in American sports history.

XRP Is Like Kevin Durant

Though a Bitcoin enthusiast, Thompson has frequently spoken about XRP. In June, he compared digital assets to NBA legends, noting that XRP is akin to Kevin Durant, while Bitcoin and Ethereum are comparable to Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Meanwhile, he’s not the only NBA veteran showing interest in XRP. Earlier this year, Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen asked his followers on X whether the token could realistically reach the $10 mark by 2026.

Amid this growing interest, XRP has experienced a slight recovery, rising 2.95% over the past 24 hours. It is currently trading at $2.85 per token.
