Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is facing criticism from crypto influencer Rune Crypto after saying he may not have known that content shared from his personal X account had been linked to a crypto token.
Specifically, Rune Crypto pointed to the BRIAN token on Base, which is named after Armstrong, claiming it generated more than $100 million in trading volume and attracted over 40,000 traders. He also said thousands of users tagged Armstrong on X, urging him to address the token.
Based on those developments, Rune Crypto argued that either Armstrong was aware of the token and later distanced himself from it, or he genuinely overlooked its growing popularity. In either case, he said, the situation suggests a disconnect between Coinbase’s leadership and the Base community.
The criticism followed Armstrong’s statement that content he publishes on his personal X account, including posts, profile photo updates, and memes, should not be interpreted as backing any cryptocurrency or blockchain project. He added that he may not always know when an image or post has been associated with a token by the broader crypto community.
