Cardano is preparing protocol upgrades to increase transaction throughput and accelerate settlement, with the changes split across two stages of its upcoming Dijkstra era through 2027.
Ouroboros Linear Leios will anchor the first stage, with code completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Outlined in CIP-164, the protocol uses supplementary Endorser Blocks to increase transaction throughput.
The same stage will bundle several transactions and account changes. CIP-118 introduces nested transactions, CIP-112 adds guard scripts, CIP-159 brings account-address enhancements, and CIP-181 simplifies staking-reward withdrawals.
A second stage targeted for the second quarter of 2027 will introduce Ouroboros Peras under CIP-140. The protocol adds stake-pool voting intended to shorten settlement times.
Notably, neither set of changes will move directly to Cardano’s mainnet. Each phase is due to be deployed on a testnet and must secure on-chain governance approval before activation.
