Circle Buys IBM IP Portfolio Covering Blockchain and Financial Technology

Circle acquired more than 680 patent families from IBM, adding nearly 1,000 issued patents to its intellectual property portfolio.

Specifically, the portfolio spans technologies including blockchain infrastructure, payments, banking, insurance, supply chain management and secure cloud operations. Circle said the acquisition establishes it as the largest U.S. holder of blockchain patents.

The company expects the patents to support development across its digital finance offerings, including Circle Payments Network, USDC, Arc and its agentic finance tools. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
