Coinbase Chief Executive Brian Armstrong said artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency should be viewed as complementary technologies rather than competing trends, arguing that digital assets will provide the financial infrastructure needed for autonomous AI agents.
In a post on X, Armstrong said he expects AI agents to eventually carry out more daily transactions than humans combined, creating demand for a financial system capable of supporting machine-to-machine payments at scale.
He said Coinbase is developing what it calls “Agentic Finance” to support that vision, highlighting the company’s x402 protocol, Base blockchain network, and the USDC stablecoin as key components of the initiative.Â
Armstrong’s comments underscore Coinbase’s strategy of positioning its products at the intersection of AI and blockchain technology, as the company seeks to build infrastructure for automated digital commerce between AI-powered agents.
