Crypto holders lost more than $30 million to wrench attacks in the first half of 2026, putting annual losses on pace to exceed the record $58 million reported in 2025 if the current trend continues, according to Chainalysis.
France has emerged as a major hotspot for the attacks, the blockchain analytics firm said. A data breach involving French tax authorities exposed information on high-net-worth crypto investors, expanding the pool of potential targets for criminals.
Attackers are also increasingly targeting crypto holders’ family members, Chainalysis said, with home invasions and kidnappings accounting for a growing share of cases.
