CZ Says He Underestimated Stablecoins as Market Reaches $309.85 Billion

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said he underestimated the long-term potential of stablecoins, acknowledging that he did not anticipate the sector would expand into one of the largest segments of the cryptocurrency market.

Speaking on the Talking Tokens Podcast, Zhao said that during his time leading Binance, he viewed stablecoins primarily as a transitional technology designed to facilitate transfers between cryptocurrency exchanges. Consequently, he did not expect the market to reach its current scale.

Zhao said his perspective has broadened since stepping down as Binance’s chief executive, with his attention now extending beyond cryptocurrency trading infrastructure to areas including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, real-world assets (RWAs), and asset tokenization.

The stablecoin sector has since grown substantially, with its total market capitalization standing at approximately $309.85 billion at the time of writing.
