Institutional investors accumulated more Bitcoin through ETFs during the second quarter of 2026 even as the cryptocurrency lost 14.2%, according to data reported by CryptoSlate.
Specifically, reported institutional ETF holdings reached 535,723 BTC by the end of the quarter, up 7.5% from 498,389 BTC, putting the increase in exposure at odds with Bitcoin’s price performance over the period.
The accumulation was not broad-based. Banks and quantitative funds expanded their positions, while sovereign wealth funds and endowments showed little change.Â
At the same time, the pool of institutions reporting Bitcoin positions in 13F filings narrowed. Roughly 1,900 institutions disclosed positions, compared with about 2,000 previously.Â
Hedge funds also reduced some of their holdings in spot Bitcoin ETFs. However, 13F filings may not fully capture their overall exposure because options positions can materially change their effective market exposure.
