Japan Eyes 24/7 Blockchain Settlement for Government Bonds and Stocks

Japan flag over a digital financial network and market chart representing blockchain-based settlement infrastructure.

Japan is preparing a blockchain-based infrastructure that would allow real-time, round-the-clock settlement of government bonds and stocks, Nikkei reported, bringing the technology into plans for the country’s financial-market plumbing.

The Financial Services Agency, Bank of Japan, Ministry of Finance, and financial institutions will form a study group this summer to work on the initiative.

A development plan is expected in early 2027. The framework will address the system’s blockchain architecture and define how the government, central bank, and participating financial institutions would work together.

Japan has already tested blockchain technology through several financial-sector experiments. Unlike those earlier trials, the latest initiative has a specified timetable for moving toward implementation, according to Nikkei.
