MARA Holdings Chief Executive Fred Thiel said artificial intelligence data centers generate substantially more revenue per unit of electricity than Bitcoin mining, underscoring the company’s long-term flexibility as demand for AI infrastructure grows.

Speaking in an interview with Natalie Brunell, Thiel said MARA, one of the world’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining companies, currently has more than 4 gigawatts of energy capacity. He said the company can continue mining Bitcoin at its existing facilities while retaining the option to convert that infrastructure into AI data centers over time.

Thiel also clarified that MARA does not consider itself a digital asset treasury company, describing its Bitcoin holdings as part of the company’s broader cash management strategy.

He pointed to the company’s previous sale of about 20,000 Bitcoin, saying the proceeds were used to repurchase outstanding bonds at a discount and reduce debt. According to Thiel, the move reflected balance sheet management rather than a shift away from Bitcoin.

Despite maintaining confidence in the cryptocurrency, Thiel said Bitcoin’s inability to generate yield remains its biggest limitation as an asset.
