Japan has granted its first new crypto asset exchange service provider registration in four years, with Nomura Securities-backed Laser Digital Japan securing regulatory approval to operate in the country.
Laser Digital plans to begin by supplying liquidity to domestic virtual asset service providers (VASPs). It intends to expand its offering later to digital asset trading services aimed at institutional investors.
The approval follows Japan’s reclassification of crypto assets as financial instruments, a regulatory change that has laid the groundwork for potential investment products including crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
