North Korean Hackers Compromised 1,640 Companies in Crypto-Focused Campaign, Researcher Says

North Korean hackers compromised 1,640 companies across 57 countries through fake job interview lures, according to Vangelis Stykas, chief technology officer at cybersecurity firm Kumio, as reported by WIRED.

Stykas said the findings followed 22 months of maintained access to command-and-control servers operated by the hackers.

Between 700 and 800 of the affected organizations suffered particularly damaging intrusions, including compromises that granted attackers root-level server privileges, AWS permissions and control of cryptocurrency wallet keys, according to the research.

The hackers concentrated on cryptocurrency theft, while weak access controls involving external contractors significantly increased the scope of the breaches, the research found.
