Only 3 of the World’s Top 50 Stablecoins Comply With EU MiCA Rules, Circle Executive Says

Circle USDC

According to Patrick Hansen, Circle’s Senior Director of EU Strategy and Policy, the European Union has authorized approximately 35 regulated e-money tokens issued by 21 entities under its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. However, only three of the world’s 50 largest stablecoins—EURC, USDC, and USDG—currently comply with the bloc’s regulatory requirements.

Hansen said the limited number of MiCA-compliant stablecoins among the global market leaders highlights the need to refine the EU’s regulatory framework as adoption expands.

He said a future review of MiCA should focus on improving the EU’s competitiveness, enhancing coordination with international regulatory regimes, and introducing a recognition framework for stablecoins that are already regulated in foreign jurisdictions.

The proposals are intended to make the EU’s digital asset market more internationally aligned while maintaining regulatory oversight of stablecoin issuers operating across borders.
