Vitalik Buterin Outlines Ethereum Roadmap Shift to Post-Quantum Security and Native Rollups

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the blockchain’s development roadmap has changed significantly since 2023, with quantum security and privacy gaining priority as some earlier proposals have been scaled back or replaced.

The updated roadmap includes native rollups, blob and gas futures, new state types and post-quantum signatures. It also envisions a leaner protocol architecture using STARKs and AI-assisted formal verification.

Buterin said Ethereum could eventually expose simpler execution architectures, including RISC-V or leanISA, alongside or beneath the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

Meanwhile, other elements have moved down the priority list, including verifiable delay functions (VDFs) and parts of the earlier EVM roadmap.

Ether (ETH), Ethereum’s native token, was trading at $1,872 at the time of writing, 62% below its all-time high of $4,946 recorded on Aug. 24, 2025.
