Fake XRP Wallet On Google Chrome Store Targets XRPL Users

The XRPL community has rallied to report a fake Xumm plugin designed to siphon funds from unsuspecting users.

Xumm Wallet is one of the most widely used wallets in the XRPL ecosystem, and bad actors have often targeted it. In the latest attempt, users have spotted a fake Xumm plugin listed on the Chrome web store.

The malicious extension has already gained over 40 positive reviews on the store, a tactic its creators use to convince unsuspecting users that it is genuine. However, similar to all fake crypto wallet plugins, users will realize the danger only after transferring funds to a wallet address created with the plugin.

On other occasions, the seed phrase generated with the plugin becomes permanently compromised and leads to loss of funds when restored with a different wallet provider. Nonetheless, the XRPL community is not taking such chances and has collectively reported the fake extension following notice from Eminence CTO Daniel.

At the time of writing, the fake plugin is still listed on the Google Chrome web store and has an estimated 42 users. Yet, experienced users can tell the difference as the fake plugin features several typographical errors in its description, unlike the original Xumm wallet.

Additionally, the original Xumm Wallet is mainly available for download through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. The app also boasts over 600,000 active users compared to the fake plugin on the Google Chrome web store, which has just 42.

Users are advised to desist from installing the plugin, even for curiosity’s sake, as the risk is not worth it. The only action necessary is to report the plugin until Google takes it down.

Xumm Expands Fiat Channels

Although bad actors continue to target Xumm wallet users, the XRPL Labs team has always responded quickly to address such concerns. At the same time, the popular XRPL wallet has consistently improved its offering, especially through the expansion of its fiat channels.

In late October, Xumm partnered with Uphold to offer zero-fee XRP purchases. The XRPL wallet provider has also integrated SimpleSwap alongside 100 additional payment channels, all designed to facilitate XRP purchases and bring more capital into the XRPL ecosystem.
