Moments after a pardon by U.S. President Donald Trump, Silk Road’s Ross Ulbricht has been seen walking free from prison.
Trump announced the pardon on his Truth Social platform, revealing that he had personally informed Ulbricht’s mother about the decision. This came only a day after confirmation by Elon Musk that Ulbricht would secure the promised presidential pardon.
Notably, Trump issued a full and unconditional pardon for Ulbricht, creating a flurry of excitement among Ulbricht’s supporters.
Ulbricht, who was convicted in 2015 on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit drug trafficking, money laundering, and computer hacking, was sentenced to life in prison. His platform, Silk Road, facilitated anonymous transactions using Bitcoin, allowing users to trade illicit goods, notably drugs.
Political Support and Libertarian Advocacy
Trump’s decision to pardon Ulbricht aligns with previous remarks he made at the Libertarian National Convention, where he hinted at clemency. The Libertarian Party had long championed Ulbricht’s release, viewing his case as a prime example of government overreach.
