Cathie Wood, founder of Ark Invest, recently shared her belief that Bitcoin has the potential to multiply by 15 times in value over the next five years.

Her insights reflect Ark’s long-term investment perspective, emphasizing Bitcoin’s role as a new asset class and a foundation for a global monetary system. Wood’s predictions are based on research, historical context, and recent developments in the crypto space.

Notably, the prediction comes while Bitcoin trades at $105,533, with no notable change in the past 24 hours.

Ark Invest’s Early Adoption of Bitcoin

Wood and Ark Invest’s involvement with Bitcoin dates back to 2015, when the cryptocurrency was around $250. Ark’s research team explored Bitcoin’s potential as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and a unit of account.

Economist Professor Art Laffer reviewed this foundational work. Per the disclosure, Laffer had been waiting for a system like Bitcoin since the U.S. abandoned the gold standard in 1971. Laffer’s analysis of Bitcoin’s potential to transform global finance strengthened Ark Invest’s conviction in the asset.

At the time, Bitcoin’s market capitalization was a mere $6 billion, while the U.S. monetary base stood at $4.5 trillion. This stark contrast highlighted Bitcoin’s immense growth potential.

Despite regulatory hesitations, Ark Invest continued to buy Bitcoin and eventually integrated it into its portfolio through the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). Over time, this early investment has seen significant returns, and Ark has remained steadfast in its commitment to crypto.

Bitcoin as a New Asset Class

Bitcoin has evolved from a niche digital asset into a recognized new asset class. According to Wood, this transition marks a major milestone in financial history, akin to the emergence of equities in the 1600s.

Bitcoin’s status as a new asset class is underpinned by its ability to diversify portfolios, offering a unique investment opportunity for institutional investors.

Despite Bitcoin’s current $2 trillion market capitalization, Wood sees potential for continued growth as institutions allocate more capital to BTC.

Notably, institutional interest has surged since the approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF in January 2024. Wood noted that only $100 billion of new market cap remains to be mined, while trillions of dollars are currently managed by these institutions.

This supply-demand dynamic could drive Bitcoin’s value upward as more investors seek exposure.

Wood’s forecast for Bitcoin’s price by 2030 is $1.5 million, which represents an approximately 1325.39% increase from the current price. Meanwhile, the company believes $2.5 million is possible in an ultra bull scenario.
