US Harmony’s $100 Million Hack Vindicates Ethereum Founder’s Concerns About Cross Chain Bridges

0

Few Month Ago ETH Founder Described Dangers of Cross Chain Bridges, Today USA Harmony Hacked For $100M.

Harmony’s cross-chain bridge, Horizon, is the latest of such bridges to be attacked by hackers. It appears that crypto cross-chain bridges have become a huge target for hackers of late.

After the Ronin Bridge on Axie Infinity, now the Horizon Bridge has fallen victim to the exact attack. However, the funds stolen via the Horizon Bridge are far less than those taken via Ronin. The hack on Ronin Bridge led to the loss of around $620 million ETH and USDC while the attack on Horizon Bridge has led to the loss of around $100 million worth of cryptos.

Following the attack, Harmony based in California, United States took to Twitter to announce the sad news, adding that the company is now working closely with the authorities and forensic experts to track down the attackers.

BTC Not Affected

While a few blockchains served by the Horizon Bridge were affected, Bitcoin’s chain didn’t suffer any setbacks. Harmony acknowledged this in their Twitter thread. The affected chains include Binance Chain and Ethereum.

Investigations into the attack have revealed that a number of tokens were stolen during the attack. These include AAVE, USDC, wETH, wBTC, USDT, BUSD, AAG, SUSHI, FXS, FRAX, and DAI. Apparently, the attackers moved to swap the stolen tokens to ETH on Uniswap DEX before sending the ETH back to their wallets. From the look of it, this was a planned attack.

Community Concerns Vindicated

After news of the attack was broken, the community rose up in arms, reminding Harmony and the industry at large about the concerns that were aired about the Multisig control system used to secure the bridge and the cryptos.

Harmony used a multisig functionality that required only two out four trusted entities to execute a token transfer. The attackers managed to get hold of two validators and gained access to the stash.

Hacking incidents targeting cross-chain bridges have been rampant of late, prompting calls for more security checks on the part of the bridge operators. Since the start of the year, such attacks have led to a combined loss of around $1 billion from crypto platforms.

Threats of Cross Chain Bridges

Over 6 months ago Vitalik summarized the risks of cross-chain bridges in a Reddit post:

“The fundamental security limits of bridges are actually a key reason why while I am optimistic about a multi-chain blockchain ecosystem (there really are a few separate communities with different values and it’s better for them to live separately than all fight over influence on the same thing), I am pessimistic about cross-chain applications.

To understand why bridges have these limitations, we need to look at how various combinations of blockchains and bridging survive 51% attacks. Many people have the mentality that “if a blockchain gets 51% attacked, everything breaks, and so we need to put all our force on preventing a 51% attack from ever happening even once”. I really disagree with this style of thinking; in fact, blockchains maintain many of their guarantees even after a 51% attack, and it’s really important to preserve these guarantees.

For example, suppose that you have 100 ETH on Ethereum, and Ethereum gets 51% attacked, so some transactions get censored and/or reverted. No matter what happens, you still have your 100 ETH. Even a 51% attacker cannot propose a block that takes away your ETH, because such a block would violate the protocol rules and so it would get rejected by the network. Even if 99% of the hashpower or stake wants to take away your ETH, everyone running a node would just follow the chain with the remaining 1%, because only its blocks follow the protocol rules. More generally, if you have an application on Ethereum, then a 51% attack could censor or revert it for some time, but what comes out at the end is a consistent state. If you had 100 ETH, but sold it for 320000 DAI on Uniswap, even if the blockchain gets attacked in some arbitrary crazy way, at the end of the day you still have a sensible outcome – either you keep your 100 ETH or you get your 320000 DAI. The outcome where you get neither (or, for that matter, both) violates protocol rules and so would not get accepted.

Now, imaging what happens if you move 100 ETH onto a bridge on Solana to get 100 Solana-WETH, and then Ethereum gets 51% attacked. The attacker deposited a bunch of their own ETH into Solana-WETH and then reverted that transaction on the Ethereum side as soon as the Solana side confirmed it. The Solana-WETH contract is now no longer fully backed, and perhaps your 100 Solana-WETH is now only worth 60 ETH. Even if there’s a perfect ZK-SNARK-based bridge that fully validates consensus, it’s still vulnerable to theft through 51% attacks like this.

For this reason, it’s always safer to hold Ethereum-native assets on Ethereum or Solana-native assets on Solana than it is to hold Ethereum-native assets on Solana or Solana-native assets on Ethereum.”

Following the introduction of Vodafone as the tournament’s official technology partner, the Rugby World Cup is now in a position to join other sports in having a crypto firm as an official sponsor.

According to Jon Dutton, chief executive of RLWC2021, crypto companies have recently established themselves in the sports sponsorship market, and he is pleased that they have been able to introduce this innovative sector to the Rugby League World Cup.

He went on to say that CoinEx is a worldwide corporation, and the trading platform they use strongly emphasizes being safe, reliable, professional, and compliant. This is in line with the authenticity value that RLWC2021 holds dear.

CoinEx is a reputable and worldwide cryptocurrency exchange that was established in the year 2017. CoinEx asserts that it provides a safe, reliable, and effective service for its three million customers all around the world, as part of its mission to simplify cryptocurrency trading.

The RLWC2021 was delayed due to the withdrawal of defending champions Australia, and New Zealand and will now take place from 15 October to November 19, 2022.

Bear Market Might Put A Stop On Crypto Sports Partnerships

In related news, like sports and crypto partnerships and increasing—with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of sponsorship agreements being made between crypto businesses and sports clubs—the current market situation is putting a halt on things.

Joe Favorito, who teaches sports administration at Columbia University, recently gave an interview to the New York Post. He said that he does not expect any new sports collaborations to be revealed while the market is in a downward trend.

During the previous crypto craze, sports corporations spent a fortune on sponsorships. Crypto.com spent $700 million for 20 years to name the LA Lakers’ arena. FTX spent $135 to rename the Miami Heat’s stadium in 2021. Tezos pays $27 million to get their logo on Manchester United shirts.

Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao Identifies Key Difference Between 2018 Bear Market And Now

0

The Binance CEO is optimistic that the cryptocurrency market will blossom again.

It is no longer news that the cryptocurrency market has been facing a major downward trend that has plunged the entire valuation of the cryptocurrency market below $1 trillion.

The recent cryptocurrency crash reminded many of the 2018 bear market, which started moments after the prices of digital currencies existing at the time soared to new highs.

CZ: Current Crypto Market Has More Leverage

Interestingly, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, the CEO and founder of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by 24-hour trade volume, has highlighted key differences why the 2018 bear market is different from the current one.

According to CZ, cryptocurrency now has more leverage compared to what was in existence in 2018. CZ noted that leverage is in two categories – fast and slow – adding that slow leverage is found when funds lend to different decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, while fast leverage is mostly found on centralized exchanges, especially with futures products.

CZ said slow leverage is being taken out of the system, which is a major reason the entire crypto market is experiencing a domino effect.

“When one of these gets (Funds) liquidated, the affected lenders typically take a few days or weeks to realize or admit the pain. These can also have a cascading effect, but the propagation speed is much slower,” CZ said in a statement.

As a result of the ongoing cascading effect, CZ said some crypto-related projects are usually lucky as they get funded by “big fish,” whereas others do not get such support from these large corporations.

Allow Bad Crypto Projects to Fail – CZ

He noted that some projects are bad and are not supposed to be saved. In CZ’s words: “Don’t perpetuate bad companies. Let them fail. Let other better projects take their place, and they will.”

Unfortunately, these projects have attracted many users through enticing promotions such as inflated incentives and creative marketing. While CZ asserted that the crypto market is yet to see “the end of these yet.”

“Sadly, some of these ‘bad’ projects have a large number of users, often acquired through inflated incentives, ‘creative’ marketing, or pure Ponzi schemes. Bailouts here don’t make sense. Let them fail. Let other better projects take their place, and they will.”

The Binance executive noted that these bad projects do not require “bailouts”; however, cryptocurrency projects that have good qualities and have made a few mistakes are the ones that need to be saved.

“With our position as one of the largest industry players with healthy cash reserves, we have a duty to protect users. We also have a responsibility to help industry players survive and hopefully thrive But: Not all bailouts are the same.”

Mike McGlone And CZ’s Opinion On BTC Price

CZ says that the current market value for Bitcoin is low although not an entirely bad price.

“In 2017, we thought 20K was crazy high. Today, we think 20K is painfully low. The industry is growing,”

Meanwhile, CZ’s views about the massive growth of the crypto market was echoed by Bloomberg’s senior analyst Mike McGlone, who noted that Bitcoin at $20,000 is now the new $5,000.

“$20,000 Bitcoin Maybe the New $5,000 – The fundamental case of early days for global Bitcoin adoption vs. diminishing supply may prevail as the price approaches typically too-cold levels,” McGlone said in a recent tweet.

At the moment, Bitcoin is still trading within the $20,000 range as investors continue to hope that the ongoing cryptocurrency winter will soon come to an end.

Peter Brandt Poll Shows Bitcoin Bottom Not Yet In

0

A Poll Was Conducted By Crypto Analyst, Peter Brandt, On Twitter To Determine If Bitcoin Has Hit Rock Bottom.

A crypto expert by the name of Peter Brandt has taken to Twitter in order to conduct a poll in which he asks his followers whether or not they believe Bitcoin has hit its nadir. There were 9,200 persons that participated in the poll, and 53.3% of them selected the “No” option, while 24.8% selected the “Yes” option, and 22.7% selected “Not sure”.

Peter Brandt is the analyst who rose to prominence when he correctly predicted the crypto winter of 2018. If the price of Bitcoin is unable to recover to the level of $32,000, he has predicted that it will continue to fall until it reaches the level of $13,000.

Peter Brandt is one of the most famous analysts in the crypto industry. He has approximately 50 years of expertise in the business, and after forecasting the crypto winter of 2018, he rose to prominence within the community.

Yesterday, Peter Brandt, who happens to be a seasoned trader with a great deal of expertise in the market, it’s possible that the challenges that different crypto companies are now facing are simply the tip of the iceberg.

The original problem certainly has a more fundamental cause that must be addressed. Peter demonstrated his argument by sharing a tweet that said Voyager had placed a restriction on the amount of money that could be withdrawn.

The trading legend also claimed in a recent tweet that the price of Ether, which is the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, might plummet to as low as $300. This prediction was made around a week ago.

The value of the altcoin dropped as low as $881 on Saturday, marking the first time since December 2020 that it has reached such a low point. According to CoinMarketCap data, the price of ETH has increased to $1100 after a short-lived but welcome relief bounce; nonetheless, the prevailing mood is still quite negative.

Unification Released New Updates For Shiba Inu’s Shibarium Along With Possible Launch Date

0

The Shiba Inu team is close to launching the much-anticipated blockchain project Shibarium.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) has announced that the public beta testnet for its Layer-2 blockchain project Shibarium will commence in the third quarter of 2022.

The team behind Shiba Inu decided to deploy the public beta testing for Shiba Inu in Q3 2022 after the success recorded during the private alpha testnet of the L2 blockchain.

According to an announcement today, the private alpha testnet of Shibarium has been quietly running for weeks without experiencing any issues, and developers feel the time is right to roll out the project for public testing.

“The Shibarium Public Beta TestNet is planned for deployment in Q3, to coincide with the FUND TestNet upgrade which includes the much anticipated IBC/Gravity/wFUND updates,” Shiba Inu said in the announcement.

Shibarium Expectations

Upon the rollout of Shibarium for public testing, people will be allowed to fully interact with the network, especially participating in the validation process.

“The public Beta TestNet will allow parties to fully interact with the network, including the validation process.”

According to Unification “The primary tool under heavy development is the wallet application, which is intended to be an all-inclusive application covering two-way asset transfers between L1 and L2, asset transfers on each respective level, staking/delegating, and in future releases, Shibaswap integration, which will also be deployed on L2.”

Meanwhile, Shibarium is part of the initiatives under development that will prove that Shiba Inu is not a meme coin, but a utility project.

The L2 network, which is being built on the Ethereum blockchain, is tipped to have the same capabilities as ETH scaling platform Polygon.

Once Shibarium goes live, Shiba Inu developers will be migrating all SHIB-related projects, including Shiboshi, the upcoming Collectible Card Game (CCG), and the metaverse project to the Layer-2 network.

As Retirement Savers Lose $3T, Binance CEO Throws A Jab Against Traditional Markets, Saying “Crypto is volatile…”

0

Binance’s CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is on a mission to expose the ills of traditional financial markets even as cryptos crash.

Over the last few months, numerous reports have revealed that the world is about to go into an economic recession. With this trend, the stock market has crashed hard.

The crypto market hasn’t been spared either, although there are a few more factors in play in regard to cryptos. However, some mainstream players in the traditional financial markets have long sought to bash cryptos as too volatile and unreliable. In a recent tweet, Binance’s CEO had something to show them.

CZ shared a post sent out by Yahoo Finance, in which numerous people who put their money in retirement savings are said to have lost around $3 trillion when the stock market crashed. A loss of that magnitude is huge in a market that has been long touted as strong.

Crypto Not As Bad As Stocks

By sharing this tweet, CZ had a clear point to put across. First, the entire crypto market was worth around $3 trillion before prices dropped. It’s now worth just a little under $1 trillion. This loss can’t be compared to a whole $3 trillion loss experienced by retirees.

Other than the most common criticism of crypto is that it is volatile and there are high up and downswings in a matter of hours or days. Pointing to Retriment saver’s losses of $3T, CZ is asking if crypto is volatile??? when traditional finance can lose Trillions in a few days of bear markets.

Furthermore, this mentioned loss was just by one group of investors/savers. There are many more groups of investors that may have lost trillions as well. From this perspective, it’s clear that the stock market has taken a pretty huge hit as compared to the crypto market.

Cryptos Recover Faster

While both the stock and crypto markets have experienced a crash, history shows that cryptos have the power to recover much faster than stocks.

As a matter of fact, the crypto market has been studied and revealed to be functioning in a cycle. The current downturn was an expected bear cycle, with the next cycle expected to be a bull run. This isn’t the case with the stock market. The crash of the stocks is entire a result of fiat inflation and global recession.

In a recent interview, CZ said that cryptos like Bitcoin could take between a few months and 2 years to recover and hit above the ATH, while stocks will remain stuck at low levels for many years.

SEC Proposed Redactions to Ripple’s Response Letter to Its Objection to Amici’s Participation In the Expert Challenge

0

The SEC is not taking any chances in its bid to protect its experts from any form of harassment or threat.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed under seal its proposed redactions to Ripple’s response to its objection to amici’s participation in the upcoming Daubert challenge.

Explaining in the letter why it is necessary to redact some portions of Ripple’s response, the SEC noted that not redacting the portions would further expose the expert to threat.

“In short, the proposed redactions to the response are narrowly tailored to serve the higher value of protecting witness safety in light of the likelihood that past harassment and threats will continue in the absence of such steps,” excerpts of the report read.

The SEC was specific about redacting Footnote 1 in the Ripple’s response, which it claims contains excerpts from the expert report.

The Securities and Exchange Commission noted that the remaining proposed redactions are in line with information about the threats and harassment expressed in the opposition brief.

“These redactions are appropriate because as explained more fully in the sealing application, information and arguments about the harassment and effects of such harassment may fuel future efforts to threaten and harass the expert,” the SEC said.

It is noteworthy that the SEC’s proposed redactions come a few weeks after Ripple requested that the court publicize its response to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s opposition to the amici motion to participate in the expert challenge.

Judge Torres to Make Final Decision

Following the SEC’s move to file its opposition to amici’s participation under seal in a bid to protect the expert from being subjected to threats and harassment, Ripple followed a similar approach by also filing its response under seal.

With the latest developments, Judge Analisa Torres will now have to decide what part of Ripple’s response to the SEC’s opposition to amici’s request to participate in the expert challenge will be filed in the public docket.

Meanwhile, the SEC’s proposed redactions to Ripple’s response were shared by attorney James K. Filan, who shared a copy of the agency’s letter with the caption:

“The SEC filed, under seal, its proposed redactions to the Ripple Defendants’ response to the SEC’s opposition to the amici motion to participate in the expert challenge. The SEC also publicly filed a letter explaining its proposed redactions.”

Author Of “Black Swan” Naseem Taleb And Peter Brandt Both Say Crypto Winter May Prolong

0

Naseem Taleb And Peter Brandt Both Say Crypto Ice Age May Prolong. Crypto winter may not be seasonal as implied in its journalistic expression.

When people say “winter,” it implies a passing short season followed by lots of good stuff. But when it’s about cryptocurrencies, “crypto winter” may have a whole new meaning.

For starters, there’s already a kind of history already set by this phenomenon. There was a crypto winter back in 2018/2019. While actual winters last a few months, this one lasted more than a year. It was about the market shifts for digital assets as opposed to weather shifts in the real world.

This is, perhaps, the major points that Naseem Nicholas Taleb and Peter Brandt are trying to make when they talk about the current hard times and the immediate future of the crypto space.

What Naseem Says

Naseem is a huge fan of Mathematics, Philosophy, and real-life probabilities and author of well-known book “The Black Swan”.

According to him, crypto winter isn’t exactly what some people may think of it. As mentioned earlier, winter is an abstract expression that refers to seasons in a real-world setting. In the digital market, it may mean something entirely different. It may not be transitory as people expect. It may be a prolonged period of market downturns – much like the Ice Age.

For this reason, Naseem has a rather pessimistic view of the coming crypto winter. He thinks of it as the ultimate period that, much like the Ice Age, will result in the “extinction” of various finance-related entities linked to the crypto space.

“The journalistic expression “Crypto Winter” is highly deceiving; it implies seasonality and, perhaps worse, a reversion to some trend. No, your winter may not be transitory, & what you call winter may degrade into a permanent & inescapable ice age fraught with extinctions.”

The troubles facing the likes of Celsius, 3AC, Voyager, Babel, CoinFLEX, Coincodex, and others are a point to this fact. These CeFi platforms have come an inch away from total liquidation due to the current market downturns. They have resorted to extreme measures to save themselves, including halting all deposits and withdrawals. There are reports that Celsius is now in the process of being bailed out or bought out by another entity.

Peter Brandt’s Opinion

According to Peter Brandt, who happens to be a veteran trader with lots of experience in the market, the current hardships faced by various crypto entities may be just the tip of the iceberg. There’s bound to be a bigger issue underlying the initial problem. To prove this point, Peter shared a tweet reporting that Voyager has put a withdrawal limit.

Voyager is one of the platforms affected by the market crash. It’s rumored that 3AC holds a huge debt borrowed from Voyager and is contemplating defaulting on the payment.

“Lots of bank holidays forthcoming in crypto/nft space This is like an iceberg — the real danger is with the iceberg below the water line.”

Cardano Founder Proposes Favorable Regulations For Regulating 20K Cryptos Before U.S. House of Reps

0

Hoskinson is still making moves to urge policymakers to create friendly regulations for the crypto industry.

The issue of cryptocurrency regulation has been one of the hottest topics in the industry. While crypto-related companies have consistently sought clearer regulation for the nascent industry, regulatory bodies like the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) are yet to establish clearer regulatory policies for digital currencies.

Hoskinson Testifies Before U.S. Policymakers

In a bid to seek clearer regulation of the crypto space, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of the Cardano blockchain, recently testified at a hearing at the United States House Subcommittee on Commodity Exchanges, Energy, and Credit.

“I am pleased to provide you with as much information as you need in order to ensure a fully informed and robust conversation on the future of digital asset regulation,” Hoskinson was quoted as saying.

He further said that It’s impossible to regulate all cryptos by one person or entity. Regulation can become algorithmic and what is good about Crypto is that its transactions carry metadata and identity on the transactions themselves. So we can have Some form of self-certification by Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) and no government involvement until an anomaly is detected by the algorithm. So that self-certification method can be monitored by The Commodity Futures Trading Commission or SEC as they monitor other financial sectors.

Difficulty in Regulating All Existing Cryptos

Hoskinson acknowledged that it would be impossible for regulators to provide clearer regulation for each cryptocurrency asset due to the enormous amount of projects in existence, which has over the years exceeded 20,000.

However, he suggested that U.S. regulators should focus on tools that can make crypto regulation easier.

The Cardano exec noted that regulators and policymakers can choose to sit back while stating the things they care about regarding regulating the industry and these things will be integrated into a system like establishing a Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO).

He added that the existing government agencies tasked with overseeing the cryptocurrency industry should only get involved with crypto regulation when an anomaly is detected by the algorithm incorporated into the system.

Hoskinson Calls for Private-Public Partnership

Hoskinson said the United States authorities could also establish a public-private partnership in the cryptocurrency sector, just as it did during the early days of the internet.

“The United States embraced the public-private partnership that allowed the internet to flourish and for the United States to play and maintain a primary role in internet technology. Similarly, it will take many different agencies working together with the private sector to ensure the American blockchain industry flourishes and reaches its full potential,” the Cardano boss was quoted as saying.

A Quest to Establish Friendly Crypto Regulation

Hoskinson has been focused on pushing for favorable regulations in the cryptocurrency industry. Earlier this month, the Cardano boss said he visited Washington D.C. to lobby regulators into establishing friendly policies for the nascent industry.

Meanwhile, aside from commenting on suitable ways to regulate the United States’ crypto environment, Hoskinson also highlighted some of the potentials of the blockchain and how Cardano is using the technology to proffer real-world solutions.
