Solana has evolved over time to be able to consume less energy than popular blockchain Ethereum, following widespread scrutiny of the negative impact of crypto-related transactions on the global climate.

According to recent data published by the Solana team, a Solana transaction consumes almost the same energy as a few Google searches.

Details of the data show that while a single Solana transaction consumes 2,707 joules of energy, a Google search uses 1,080 joules.

“The most recent energy impact report from @SolanaFndn found that a Solana transaction uses around the same amount of energy as a few Google searches – 2,707 Joules, to be precise,” the Solana team noted.

In the same vein, a single transaction on the Solana network uses lower energy than keeping an LED light bulb on for an hour and working on a PC for one hour, the data shows.

Despite its low energy consumption, the Solana team is still advocating for improved ways to “offset the already low energy impact.”

Last year, after the Solana Foundation funded the blockchain’s energy reduction project, the team announced it had achieved carbon neutrality for the year.

“Our carbon neutrality initiatives, paired with Solana’s high-performance, energy-efficient design, mean the community can build a sustainable web3 future for many years to come,” Dan Albert, Executive Director of the Solana Foundation said.
