New York City is preparing for a major shift as Mayor Eric Adams intensifies his push to make the city the world’s leading center for crypto asset innovations.

Notably, the first-ever NYC Crypto Summit is coming up on May 20 at Gracie Mansion. Adams emphasized his commitment to building a crypto-forward economy by advancing blockchain, tokenization, and financial technologies.

In a Monday press conference ahead of the upcoming summit, he stated that his goal is to make “New York City the crypto capital of the globe”.

City Leadership Eyes Digital Asset Transformation

Mayor Adams stated that the city is undergoing a technological transformation, identifying tokenization and blockchain as key drivers of economic growth. The city aims to modernize its systems and attract high-caliber firms by aligning public services with fintech developments. The administration pointed to rapid growth in local crypto and blockchain startups, with New York now ahead of Silicon Valley in this sector.

As part of these initiatives, Adams introduced a new advisory collaboration featuring Figure Firm co-founder June Ou and Traction and Scale CEO Richard Hecker. Both will help guide city leadership in exploring how digital assets can enhance public services and contribute to economic development.

First Crypto Paycheck Momentum

Meanwhile, during the briefing, Adams reiterated his early support for crypto. He referenced his decision in 2022 to convert his first three mayoral paychecks into cryptocurrency. He noted that the move was initially laughed at, but emphasized the significance of his long-term strategy, stating:

“All I can say is, who’s laughing now?”

The mayor also acknowledged that blockchain is no longer a future concept but a current reality. Through events like the upcoming Crypto Summit, Adams plans to gather experts from across the Web3, fintech, and crypto industries.

These discussions will focus on strategic planning and the responsible implementation of digital financial tools in New York’s economic framework. In his words:

“We’re not chasing memes or trends. We’re focused on the long-term value these technologies offer to the people of New York.”

Legal Case Dismissed, Mayoral Campaign Continues

While advancing his digital finance agenda, Adams has also been navigating legal and political challenges. He was previously facing corruption allegations related to campaign donations from the Turkish government. However, the case was recently dismissed with prejudice.

The dismissal followed intervention by Justice Department officials appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump, directing local authorities to close the investigation.

Now distancing himself from the Democratic Party, Adams is running for re-election in 2025 as an independent candidate.
