MiCA Now Fully Live: Here’s What That Means for the Crypto Industry

The European Union’s crypto regulatory framework MiCA goes into full force, heralding significant changes for the industry.

Major events like the ICO boom and the implosions of Terra and FTX have made it impossible for regulators and lawmakers to ignore the crypto industry, especially as its adoption continues to grow.

Leading the charge in the effort to foster responsible innovation is the European Union, with its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework, which passed in April 2023 after nearly three years of development.

While the implementation of the rules was phased, with rules targeting stablecoin issuers coming into force in June 2024, all parts of the framework have now entered into force since December 30, 2024. Here’s what MiCA brings to the table and how it is reshaping the EU’s crypto landscape.

What is MiCA?

The primary goal of MiCA is to ensure consumer protection in crypto while offering regulatory certainty for companies across the 27-member bloc.

MiCA tries to achieve this by setting transparency and accountability standards for crypto asset issuers and crypto asset service providers (CASPs). The rules allow market participants to obtain licensing in one country and passport their services across the bloc.

Key MiCA Provisions

For crypto asset issuers, the rules mean new disclosure requirements. Specifically, before introducing a new asset, issuers must draft a detailed whitepaper containing key details about its tokenomics, risks, and consensus mechanism.

This whitepaper must be submitted to a national authority that does not have to explicitly approve the token launch but reserves the power to block it. At the same time, these issuers must also comply with marketing disclosures.

Requirements for stablecoin issuers, however, go beyond these disclosure obligations. They must obtain electronic money institution (EMI) licenses, which impose significant Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and audit obligations.

The law also imposes high stablecoin requirements regarding liquidity, redemption, and wind-down procedures and outlaws algorithmic stablecoins.

For CASPs, MiCA means implementing robust KYC systems, establishing custody policies for the safekeeping of customer funds, and implementing robust market abuse detection and reporting systems.

Beyond these, MiCA also places a de-facto ban on privacy coins.

Which Companies are Affected by MiCA?

MiCA impacts every crypto issuer or service provider operating within or offering services to EU residents. These include stablecoin providers like Circle and Tether, exchanges like Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken, and even custodians such as BitGo.

Tether in Focus

By far, the major talking point to come out of MiCA’s passing has been its implications for the EU’s stablecoin landscape, especially as Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, has not pursued a license in the bloc, unlike its biggest competitor, Circle.

As a result, several crypto exchanges have moved to delist Tether USD (USDT) and Euro Tether (EURT) as part of efforts to obtain licensing in the region.

While it is unclear whether Tether will reverse its decision in the future, MiCA’s coming into force has likely contributed to the $2 billion decline in USDT’s market cap over the past two days from nearly $139 billion to about $137 billion.

Companies Still Have Time

Even though MiCA is now entirely in force, the law grants firms a window of grace to process licensing applications.

For stablecoin issuers, this window was set at 12 months from the law’s implementation, which gives companies until June 2025, as parts of the rules targeting stablecoins came into force in June 2024.

For CASPs, this window was set at 18 months, giving firms till June 2026 to obtain licensing or cease operations in the EU.

Meanwhile, even as firms race to comply with MiCA, regulators are already considering an update to cover DeFi and NFTs.

Bitcoin Ranks as Best-Performing Asset in 2024, Outperforms Gold, NASDAQ 100, and S&P 500

Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s largest cryptocurrency, outperforms every other major asset class globally, with an annual growth of 121% in 2024.

This was reflected in data compiled by independent wealth management firm Creative Planning. According to the data, Bitcoin registered the highest total returns among every major asset class in the 2024 fiscal year.

Bitcoin Outperforms Gold, S&P 500, NASDAQ 100, and Others

The data showed that Bitcoin saw a total return of 121%, significantly higher than that of every other asset class, such as Gold, the NASDAQ 100, and the S&P 500, among other financial instruments.

According to the data, Gold saw an annual return of 26.7%, the NASDAQ 100 posted a 25.6% gain, U.S. Large Caps achieved a surge of 24.9%, Mid Caps at 13.6%, and Convertible bonds at 10.1%. Bitcoin’s remarkable performance last year demonstrates its ability to outperform traditional assets, thus making it the best-performing asset in 2024.

Bitcoin outperforms traditional assets

It is worth mentioning that Bitcoin’s 2024 return is slightly lower than the 156% growth registered the previous year. Nonetheless, the world’s largest cryptocurrency still emerged as the best-performing asset in 2024, outperforming every other major asset class, including Gold, the S&P 500, and the NASDAQ 100.

Multiple factors, such as the launch of multiple Bitcoin spot ETFs and the Bitcoin Halving event, drove its incredible performance in 2024. Additionally, general market sentiment favoring Bitcoin amid economic uncertainty and geopolitical tension also positively impacted BTC’s price.

Bitcoin Performance from 2024 to Date

Data shows that Bitcoin’s 2024 opening price was around $42,280, with the premier cryptocurrency subsequently closing at $93,429 on December 31, 2024. This represents an annual growth of 120.97%.

Notably, Bitcoin registered its biggest rally toward the end of last year, specifically after the U.S. election. For context, on Election Day, November 5, Bitcoin hovered around $67,500. It spiked tremendously following Donald Trump’s victory, soaring to an all-time high (ATH) of $108,268 on December 17, marking a post-election gain of 60.39%.

However, Bitcoin slumped heavily shortly after, plunging below $92,000 after reaching the $108K ATH. At the moment, Bitcoin has regained momentum, as it looks set to reclaim the $100,000 target. Currently, Bitcoin is trading at $96,743, reflecting a price increase of 3.63% in the past 24 hours and 1.83% in one week.

BlackRock Bitcoin ETF Breaks Into Top 3 Global ETFs Amid Record $1.14T Inflows in 2024

The just-concluded year, 2024, set a new benchmark for the ETF industry, with Bitcoin ETFs contributing massively to a historic total net inflows of $1.14 trillion.

The BlackRock Bitcoin ETF (IBIT) secured $37.25 billion in assets during its first year of trading. According to Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, this significant figure placed it in third place on the final Top 20 ETF Leaderboard for 2024.

This rapid growth for an ETF that is less than a year old highlights the growing institutional interest in cryptocurrency, particularly Bitcoin.

Top Ranking ETFs for 2024 Amid Record $1T Inflows

Meanwhile, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) and iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV) claimed the top two spots. VOO closed 2024 with a massive $116 billion inflow, a staggering $65 billion more than its previous record. Likewise, IVV finished with $89 billion in assets.

Despite their dominance, the rapid rise of IBIT in under a year of launch indicates how investors are increasingly looking to diversify into digital assets through ETFs.

Notably, total flows into mainstream ETFs in 2024 broke records, with $1.14 trillion flowing into the sector. This figure represents a 25% increase from the previous year, totaling $225 billion more in assets.

Bitcoin ETFs Market With Record Inflows

Besides BlackRock’s IBIT, no other crypto investment product made it to the top ten ranking for highest flows in 2024. BlackRock’s closest rival, the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), ranked 14th with a one-year inflow of $11.84 billion. For context, BlackRock’s ETF inflow for 2024 was more than three times this figure.

BlackRock and Fidelity have been the two behemoths of the Bitcoin spot ETF market. Their closest rival in terms of inflows was the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), which saw only $2.17 billion in inflows throughout 2024.

While these asset managers are registering notable Bitcoin investments throughout 2024, Grayscale, once the market leader, bled $21.296 billion in outflows for the year.

Despite this staggering outflow from Grayscale, the overall U.S. Bitcoin spot ETF market welcomed a net positive flow of $35.24 billion—an impressive figure attained even before their first birthday.

Shiba Inu Breaks Above Ichimoku Cloud, Analyst Targets $0.000026

0

Shiba Inu breaks above the 2-week Ichimoku Cloud, signaling bullish momentum, as analysts predict a major upsurge.

Shiba Inu ranks among the standout performers in the ongoing crypto market recovery. Today, it has posted a 9% gain, trading at $0.0000228, its highest price so far, this new year.

Meanwhile, at this price, Shiba Inu is still trading at a substantial 22% discount from the above $0.000029 price it sold for a month ago. This presents an optimal buying opportunity even amid the recovery, as analysts have found reasons to believe more upside awaits Shiba Inu.

Ichimoku Cloud Shows Bullish Signal for Shiba Inu

In a tweet today, market watcher Cantonese Cat called attention to a critical technical phase on Shiba Inu’s 2-week chart. The commentator noted that SHIB recently achieved a breach above the Ichimoku Cloud. Notably, a similar breakout last month allowed SHIB to reach a seven-month peak above $0.000033 in December 2024.

However, the token experienced a correction phase after this notable surge, losing much of its recent gains. As December 2024 progressed, SHIB retraced to the levels it had been trading at before the breakout, touching a low of $0.000018.

Image
Shiba Inu two-weeks chart showing Ichimoku Cloud

In his commentary, Cantonese Cat confirmed this backtesting, noting that after climbing past the Ichimoku Cloud’s resistance, SHIB underwent a backtest, where the price revisited the cloud’s upper boundary to confirm it as a new support level. Now, Shiba Inu is breaking out again.

Interestingly, this observation aligns with the views of prominent analyst Javon Marks, who described Shiba Inu’s movement as some “textbook bullish signals.”

Resistance Price and Potential SHIB Cycle Top

The top of the Ichimoku Cloud is now acting as a support zone for Shiba Inu. Analysts believe that holding this level could signal further upside potential.

Specifically, Cantonese Cat’s chart highlighted the next resistance level for Shiba Inu to be near $0.000026. After overcoming this, Shiba Inu could rechallenge the $0.000033 level.

Meanwhile, Marks, in his commentary, made a case for a more compelling price outlook for Shiba Inu. He set a price target of $0.000081 for SHIB, suggesting a potential increase of nearly threefold from the current level.

This price range marks the level where Shiba Inu bulls lost momentum during the 2021 cycle. For much of 2024, Marks has consistently pointed to the $0.000081 level as a target for Shiba Inu.

Additionally, Marks has a more ambitious target for SHIB, predicting that the token could drop a zero and reach $0.000155.

Rich Dad Poor Dad Author Robert Kiyosaki Says Bitcoin Made Him Rich

0

Robert Kiyosaki, financial guru and author of the Rich Dad Poor Dad finance book, reveals that the pioneering cryptocurrency Bitcoin made him rich.

The millionaire author has lived an affluent life since his financial materials came to the limelight. However, he mentioned that Bitcoin and a few other assets contributed immensely to his current “very rich” status.

Kiyosaki Lauds Investment Advice from Warren Buffet

In the New Year’s Day tweet, Kiyosaki praised financial moguls Warren Buffet and Charlie Munger for crucial investment advice. He noted that although they failed to see the good in Bitcoin in its nascent stage, their advice to “study, know, and understand what you invest in” was applaudable.

The high-ranking investor implied that he overlooked Buffet and Munger’s “rat droppings” branding for Bitcoin and studied the asset. He disclosed that he passionately followed and listened to people who were more resourced than he was in matters relating to Bitcoin.

Eventually, the adoption of Bitcoin became part of his success story, as he became wealthy by holding the asset. Meanwhile, he mentioned that Bitcoin was not the asset that birthed his wealth status; his gold, real estate, and silver investments also paid off immensely.

Author Plans to Get Richer with Bitcoin

Notwithstanding his magnificent portfolio, Kiyosaki revealed he plans to get richer with Bitcoin. He expects his bet on the asset to keep yielding results as it nears mainstream adoption.

Moreover, his statement mirrors his bullish Bitcoin speculations. For context, Kiyosaki asserted in September that Bitcoin will hit $500,000 this year and $1 million before the end of this decade.

Notably, Kiyosaki is very big on Bitcoin. He recently stated that he will keep acquiring Bitcoin because it will continue appreciating. Meanwhile, he gave a milder Bitcoin target in the commentary, predicting a surge to $350,000 per coin before this year’s end.

If Kiyosaki’s assertion are anything to go by, Bitcoin will surge over 263% from its current price of $96,200 to attain the target.

‘XRP to $5 and $10’: Deaton Reacts as Presto Head of Research Ignores XRP in 2025 Top Crypto Predictions

0

Former U.S. Senate Candidate John Deaton has highlighted XRP potential performance for 2025, referencing three bold price targets.

Attorney Deaton made this known in a lengthy X post yesterday while reacting to Presto Head of Research Peter Chung’s bullish forecast for top cryptocurrencies this year. During a recent interview, Chung predicted the prices of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana by the end of 2025.

He expects Bitcoin to hit $210,000, Solana to climb to $1,000, and the Ethereum-to-Bitcoin ratio to soar to 0.05 from 0.03.

Surprisingly, the Presto executive did not share the company’s forecast for XRP despite the token’s notable gain last month.

This omission left Attorney Deaton stunned, so he took to X to highlight XRP’s recent feats and forecasts. Deaton emphasized that XRP is the third-biggest cryptocurrency by market cap, excluding stablecoins. He added that the token had an incredible performance last year that saw it finish last month in gains.

XRP 2025 Predictions by Top Crypto Execs

The pro-XRP lawyer referenced a recent Barron article claiming the XRP price had quadrupled since November 5. For context, the price of XRP rallied to $2.86 on December 3 from around $0.55. Notably, Attorney Deaton highlighted three major XRP price predictions from the article.

Arthur Azizov, CEO at B2BinPay, projected that XRP could trade between $5 and $7 in early 2025. Azizov’s prediction is driven by XRP’s post-election momentum and Ripple’s technological advancements.

Hani Abuagla, an analyst at crypto exchange platform XTB, forecasted that XRP will range between a conservative target of $5 and an ambitious price of $100. The expert issued this prediction in anticipation that the Donald Trump administration will reduce the regulatory scrutiny on cryptos.

The last prediction in the list came from Ryan Lee, a researcher at Bitget. Lee issued a balanced forecast for XRP, setting an average price range of $1.8 to $8.4 this year, alongside an optimistic target above $10.

Meanwhile, Attorney Deaton mentioned that some critics disagreed with the aforementioned projections, as they believe the token already peaked in December. Nonetheless, the pro-XRP lawyer refrained from issuing his prediction for XRP in 2025.

In the meantime, XRP is currently trading at $2.4, reflecting a 14.48% surge over the past 24 hours. The token has reclaimed its position as the third biggest cryptocurrency in the global crypto ranking, with its market cap currently standing at $137.52 billion.

Bitcoin to $150K, Ethereum to $8K: Steno Research Bets on Best Crypto Year Ever

Steno Research asserts that 2025 will be crypto’s best year, predicting higher prices for Bitcoin and Ethereum.

With the turn of the new year, the crypto space is awash with predictions of what 2025 may hold. Among the firms that have recently shared their outlook is Steno Research. As with many other research outlets, the company has shared a significantly optimistic forecast for the new year.

Crypto’s Best Year Yet?

Analysts at financial Research firm Steno Research have asserted that 2025 will be crypto’s best year. They disclosed this in the December 2024 report outlining predictions for the new year.

Steno Research cited several factors for its conviction. These factors include anticipated favorable regulations under a Donald Trump-led administration, supportive macroeconomic conditions as interest rates decline to boost liquidity, and unparalleled levels of institutional adoption driven by spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

The firm expects inflows to these products to spike in 2025. Bitcoin ETFs will attract $48 billion in net inflows in 2025, the firm said, averaging $4 billion in monthly inflows. This would mark a 36% increase from the $35.24 billion recorded in 2024, per SoSoValue data.

At the same time, Steno Research believes Ethereum ETFs will generate a total of $28.5 billion in net inflows in 2025, averaging $2 billion a month in the first half of the year and $3.5 billion in the second half. The firm bases this estimate on the belief that these products will eventually be able to stake a portion of their holdings to earn yield for investors by the second half of the year under a more favorable SEC.

Unsurprisingly, all of these factors equate to higher crypto asset prices. For one, Steno Research predicts that Bitcoin will soar as high as $150,000, representing a nearly 56% increase from the current price of about $96,200.

Interestingly, Steno Research expects Ethereum to outperform Bitcoin in 2025, predicting that the ETH/BTC ratio will recover to 0.06 from current levels around 0.0357. For the firm, this ETH/BTC ratio recovery translates to a $8,000 price target for ETH, representing an over 135% increase from the current price of about $3,400.

Altcoins for the Win?

Beyond Ethereum, Steno Research believes that altcoins, in general, will likely be on a tear in 2025. The firm makes this case by arguing that the Donald Trump administration favors altcoins more than Bitcoin as the latter already had significant regulatory clarity.

Meanwhile, the firm expects the anticipated clarity for altcoins to increase adoption, especially by institutions that have long been restrained by regulatory considerations.

The result is expected to be a significant drop in Bitcoin’s market dominance from the present 57.42% to as low as 45%. At the same time, total value locked (TVL) in decentralized protocols is expected to hit record highs of $300 billion, up over 140% from roughly $123 billion at the time of writing.

These factors will usher in the so-called altcoin season, Steno Research asserted.

Ethereum Bullish Breakout: Is $4,000 Possible in Q1 2025?

Will the ongoing Ethereum breakout lead to a rally above $3,400 and an extended rally past the $3,568 supply zone?

As Bitcoin reclaims the $96,000 level, Ethereum is also experiencing a recovery rally. With a 3.39% surge in the past 24 hours, Ethereum is inching closer to the $3,500 mark.

Ethereum’s bullish momentum is gaining strength following a breakout rally on the 4-hour chart. Will this breakout propel Ethereum beyond the $3,500 supply zone? Let’s explore.

ETH Price Analysis

On the 4-hour chart, Ethereum’s price trend shows a triangle breakout rally gaining momentum. With a streak of six consecutive bullish candles, Ethereum has bounced 3.17% from the local support trendline, rallying from $3,333 to the current market price of $3,437.

Ethereum price Chart
Ethereum price Chart

After crossing the local resistance trendline, the bull run has surpassed the 20 and 50 EMA lines. With a price surge of 0.70% over the past 4 hours, the uptrend is now approaching the 100 EMA line.

Ethereum’s price has surpassed the short-term resistance level at $3,415, along with the dynamic resistance and trendline. The bullish recovery is supported by the 4-hour RSI line, which has reached a value of 60.32.

Heading toward the overbought zone, the momentum indicator reveals increasing buying pressure. Additionally, the likelihood of a bullish crossover between the 20 and 50 EMA lines has significantly increased, potentially signaling a buying opportunity.

Small Recovery for Ethereum ETFs

Amid the recovery run, Ethereum ETF flows have improved. On December 31, the daily total net inflow of U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs stood at $35.93 million.

Fidelity led the bullish trend with an inflow of $31.77 million, followed by Grayscale’s Mini Ethereum Trust, which accumulated $9.77 million. However, Grayscale’s ETH ETF recorded an outflow of $5.61 million.

Ethereum Price Targets

Based on the recent price trend, the ongoing recovery will challenge the supply zone near $3,568. While the dynamic averages present strong resistance around $3,457 and $3,481, a breakout above $3,500 will determine Ethereum’s further price direction.

Specifically, a bullish close above $3,568 would increase the chances of Ethereum reclaiming the $4,000 mark in Q1 2025. However, failure to close above $3,568 could result in a continued sideways trend and heighten the likelihood of a decline below the $3,000 psychological mark.

Dogecoin Price Analysis: Will DOGE Leap to $0.41 This Week?

Dogecoin (DOGE) has crossed significant resistance levels, and technical indicators suggest a bullish outlook. Will DOGE hit $0.35 and challenge its previous price zones?

Following an overnight price jump in Bitcoin, the meme coin market has shown notable improvement. With a fresh wave of bullish momentum, Dogecoin has surged by 4.22% in the past 24 hours.

Moreover, the meme coin market cap has reclaimed the $100 billion mark. With the recovery rally breaking above critical resistance levels, could the 2025 bull run be on the horizon?

Dogecoin Price Analysis

On the 4-hour chart, Dogecoin’s price action shows a bullish recovery gaining momentum from the $0.30 demand zone. The recovery has broken above a local resistance trendline that previously dominated the short pullback phase.

Dogecoin Price Chart
Dogecoin Price Chart

With the trendline breakout, Dogecoin’s rally is now challenging the 38.20% Fibonacci level at $0.3303. Additionally, the recovery is facing higher price rejections from the 100 EMA at $0.3357.

Currently, Dogecoin is trading at $0.33053, with the short-term recovery having a significant bullish impact on the 20 EMA line. This average line is preparing for a bullish crossover with the 50 EMA, signaling positive momentum.

Furthermore, the bullish rebound from the $0.30 demand zone supports the bullish divergence in the RSI. The 4-hour RSI has reached 60.15, preparing to enter the overbought zone. Thus, technical indicators are signaling a buy for Dogecoin.

DOGE Price Targets

Based on the Fibonacci levels, the short-term recovery rally, which has broken above the local trendline, is expected to surpass the 50% Fibonacci level at $0.3551. However, two key dynamic resistances are present near the $0.35 psychological zone.

These resistances are the 100 EMA at $0.3357 and the 200 EMA at $0.34719. As such, these could be short-term price targets for high-leverage traders.

If the price breaks above the 50% Fibonacci level, it could challenge the previous resistance zone between $0.37772 and $0.41557. On the bearish side, failure to surpass the 38.20% Fibonacci level could lead to a retest of the $0.30 demand zone.

Shiba Inu Whale Takes Out 220 Billion SHIB Worth $4.63M from Binance

0

A dormant Shiba Inu whale has withdrawn 220 billion SHIB, valued at approximately $4.63 million, from Binance after a five-month period of inactivity.

Shiba Inu’s performance in December has been predominantly bearish, with the token experiencing a notable 25% decline over the month. Despite a 5% surge in the past 24 hours, SHIB’s price has struggled to recover from sustained losses.

Meanwhile, the recent uptick has largely wiped out the weekly loss, now at a 0.54% dip, but a broader two-week analysis revealed a 7.7% drop. These downward trends coincided with significant whale activity and a major outflow from Binance, raising concerns about SHIB’s distribution patterns.

Shiba Inu Whale Activity Highlights Major Outflow

Recent data from Lookonchain revealed that a dormant Shiba Inu whale, identified by address 0xBf93560b1a6075…, reactivated after five months. The whale executed a substantial withdrawal of 220 billion SHIB, valued at approximately $4.63 million, from Binance.

Image

Previous transactions involving the same whale recorded 146 to 151 days ago showed notable inflows and outflows. On day 146, the whale received 65.28 billion SHIB and subsequently transferred 1 million SHIB out. Similarly, on day 151, the whale received 64.52 billion SHIB.

Sustained Outflows Reflect Distribution Trends

Further analysis from IntoTheBlock underlined a persistent pattern of outflows from large holders, correlating with SHIB’s declining price. The past seven days alone recorded a staggering 627.85% increase in outflows, suggesting heightened distribution activity by major stakeholders.

Large Holders Netflow IntoTheBlock
Large Holders Netflow IntoTheBlock

Over the last month, outflows rose by 121.61%, while the 90-day data reflected a sustained 108.23% increase in such transactions.

The consistent outflows suggest reduced confidence among large holders or potential reallocation of funds. Large outflows can create selling pressure, contributing to the token’s declining price.

Shiba Inu Burn Efforts Achieve Milestone

Amid declining prices and outflows by whales, the Shiba Inu community achieved a milestone in token burning in 2024. According to Shibburn, the ecosystem incinerated 44.6 billion SHIB over the year, valued at approximately $991,090 based on current prices. Notably, these burns occurred at various price points, making the actual valuation of the burned tokens fluctuate.

December alone accounted for the destruction of over 2.67 billion SHIB through 143 transactions, continuing the community’s consistent burn efforts.
