Should You Be Buying Crypto In 2022?

In 2021, everyone was hopeful that the crypto industry would take off and bring investors to the moon. Come 2022, and it’s safe to say that not everyone carries that same outlook.

While there has certainly been growth for some crypto coins, it’s clear to see that crypto isn’t performing well. This can be tied to a few key reasons.

For one, an oncoming recession continues to dissuade people from investing in these financial assets.

Secondly, major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum have plummeted since their all-time high. Even long-term moving average graphs like the MA200 and MA50 show a bearish trend.

On top of that, rising interest rates, inflation, and a turbulent global situation have made stock options and cryptocurrencies far less appealing to the general public.

So, the question remains—should you be buying crypto in 2022?

Let’s weigh the facts, the pros, and the cons.

1) “Be Fearful When Others are Greedy…”

“…and greedy when others are fearful.”

This quote by esteemed billionaire investor, Warren Buffett, is often heralded as one of the most important pieces of advice in the investing world. And it absolutely applies in the cryptocurrency world.

As prices continue to drop and the market solidifies as a bearish downtrend, it’s not uncommon for more conservative investors to take the backseat when it comes to trading cryptocurrency and wait this one out.

However, some would argue that it’s exactly during these bearish times that the conditions are perfect for scoring a quick profit thanks to lower prices.

While cryptocurrencies may not return to their all-time high for months, the nature of the market has historically been cyclical.

Take for example the early cryptocurrency crash of 2018. Bitcoin has lost over 70% of its value in just a matter of weeks, from $18,000 to $3,000. Despite that, Bitcoin has managed to recover and hit a new all-time high of $68,000 the following year.

Trading and cost averaging during slow periods can help investors buy more Bitcoin or Ethereum at a discount.

And in the future, if and when the market corrects itself, these investors will be able to reap the rewards of their risk and cash in at a higher rate.

2) The Market is Overly Volatile

The cryptocurrency market is considered to be one of the most volatile in the financial world.

A day doesn’t go by where there isn’t some sort of news that rocks the boat, whether it’s a positive or negative development.

For instance, Terra Luna has gone from a top 5 cryptocurrency coin with high potential to a virtually worthless token, falling 99.99%, in a matter of days last May 2022 as soon as its stablecoin UST depegged from its $1 price.

Unlike stocks where there are safeguards and measures in place to prevent blatant market manipulation, the crypto world is still dubbed the Wild West by regulators—and rightfully so.

This volatility often leads to dramatic price swings that can leave unskilled and conservative investors down double-digit percentages in a matter of hours, which is something that doesn’t happen in normal stock trading conditions.

While more established crypto tokens like Bitcoin and Ethereum are not as volatile as some of the smaller altcoins in the market, they may still be viewed as high-risk assets when compared to stock index funds like the S&P 500.

3) The Future is Hopeful

In spite of these concerns, many remain optimistic about the future of cryptocurrency—and for good reason.

For starters, Bitcoin and Ethereum have become household names at this point, with more and more people becoming interested in buying these tokens in an Australian crypto exchange, like Independent Reserve.

On top of that, there’s a healthy deployment of various new protocols that continuously elevate the standards of the industry as a whole. This ranges from better governance models to improved staking mechanisms, and everything in between.

This not only benefits the cryptocurrency bubble, but it also extends far beyond and overlaps with real-world applications in fields such as tech, law, logistics, and finance.

And with a total market cap that’s still relatively small when compared to other asset classes, there’s more than enough room for growth in this space.

Should you buy crypto in 2022?

With all of this in mind, should you buy crypto in 2022?

By analyzing the market as rationally and informed as possible, it’s possible to make decisions that could lead to profitable investments in the future. But to answer the question—it depends.

If you’re a conservative investor who doesn’t have the time to research individual crypto, then it might be best to wait on the sidelines for now and see how the market pans out. You could also try to invest in safer options like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

If you have a higher risk tolerance and you’re familiar with the inner workings of cryptocurrency, then there might be some good opportunities for buying altcoins in 2022.

But most important of all, never invest more than you’re willing to lose.

Many people have lost their life savings in the crypto market as a result of complacency or bad luck. It’s important to treat cryptocurrency as a high-risk investment and research your options thoroughly, no matter how optimistic you might be about its future.

The Quantum Threat To Blockchains Is More Real Than You Think

To date, the threat of a quantum computer to Bitcoin no longer seems as fantastic as it was some time ago.

Quantum technologies are developing rapidly and the emergence of a quantum computer that can hack the bitcoin blockchain based on ECDSA P-256 is just around the corner.

The problem is not even that a quantum computer can hack bitcoin. The problem is that a quantum computer of sufficient power will be able to crack any classical crypto-protection at all, including any quantum-unsecured blockchain.

Although Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency with the largest capitalization, it is just one cryptocurrency. To date, there are more than 20 thousand cryptocurrencies on the cryptocurrency market and 99.9% of them do not have protection against a quantum computer attack.

The development of quantum technologies in recent years

Dr. Mark Webber from the University of Sussex said that in order to crack the protection of bitcoin, you need a quantum computer with a capacity of at least 13 million physical qubits (analogue of bits in classical computers). It will take 24 hours for such a quantum computer to crack the Bitcoin ECDSA P-256 elliptic curve. At the time of the interview, Dr. Webber said that the best quantum computers have a power of 50-100 physical qubits.

On the other hand, IBM promises to create a quantum computer with a capacity of 1000 physical qubits by 2023.

And in January 2022, the appearance of the first quantum computer in Europe (in Germany) with a capacity of 5000 qubits was announced.

Technologies do not stand still, and today no one can say exactly when a quantum computer of sufficient power will appear to crack 99.9% of all classical cryptography that exists today, including the cryptography of most of the blockchains that exist today. And the question is not even whether this is possible or not, but the whole question is only when exactly this will happen?

The US government and government agencies are already preparing for the transition to post-quantum cryptography

The American government already at the end of 2018 issued a document called “NATIONAL QUANTUM INITIATIVE ACT”

This law, in fact, aims to promote quantum technologies and US dominance in the world arena in the field of quantum technologies.

Following this, the US government agency NIST released a white paper in April 2021 called “Getting Ready for Post-Quantum Cryptography” about the quantum computer threat to most classical cryptography methods.

In 2022, NIST has identified four candidate algorithms for standardization. NIST will recommend two primary algorithms to be implemented for most use cases: CRYSTALS-KYBER (key-establishment) and CRYSTALS-Dilithium (digital signatures). In addition, the signature schemes FALCON and SPHINCS will also be standardized.

Does quantum secure blockchains even exist?

Yes. In 2018, the first quantum-secured QRL blockchain was launched.

This QRL project is secured by XMSS (eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme), a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-approved post-quantum secure digital signature scheme.

The capitalization of the QRL project is about $13M at the time of writing.

The Future of Quantum Technologies

No one can say with an accuracy of up to a year when a quantum computer with sufficient power will appear to crack most of the cryptography methods that exist today.

It is only clear that we are not talking about a decade, but about the next few years.

It is also clear that it is unlikely that any scientific researcher in their right mind would want to hack the bitcoin blockchain or any other blockchain.

The point is not that someone will seriously engage in hacking blockchains, the point is the very possibility of this hack.

That is why all parties interested in the security of their projects should take care of the transition to post-quantum protection today.

Vermont Is The Sixth State In The United States To Investigate Celsius Network

The state of Vermont is the sixth state in the United States to initiate an investigation into Celsius Network

Vermont’s Department of Financial Regulation (DFR) has issued a statement saying that Celsius Network, a troubled crypto lender, is insolvent. Crypto lending platform Celsius has been unable to process client withdrawals for the last month because of volatile market circumstances. Vermont is now the sixth US state to launch an investigation into the crypto lender.

Because of this, the state’s financial watchdog ruled that Celsius Network cannot provide any investment services in the state due to the fact that its high-interest cryptocurrency accounts are unregistered securities.

According to DFR, Celsius operated with little regulatory control and exposed retail consumers to high-risk investments that resulted in significant losses for the latter group of clients.

“In addition to the ordinary risks of cryptocurrency investing, holders of Celsius interest accounts were also exposed to credit risk that Celsius would not be able to return their tokens upon withdrawal. The Department believes Celsius has been engaged in an unregistered securities offering by offering cryptocurrency interest accounts to retail investors. Celsius also lacks a money transmitter license. The Department has joined a multistate investigation of Celsius arising from the above concerns.”

In other news, crypto lenders such as Celsius Network and others that have restricted or blocked client withdrawals and transfers may be in hot water with California regulators.

The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) said on Tuesday that it is examining various crypto lending services operating in the United States.

Even though it did not name specific companies, the California Department of Financial Protection (DFPI) said it is looking into companies that offer customers interest-bearing cryptocurrency accounts but may not adequately disclose the risks customers face when depositing crypto assets onto their platforms.

As a result of Voyager Digital’s abrupt suspension of withdrawals earlier this month and subsequent announcement of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Celsius is also likely to be targeted.

Cardano (ADA) Founder Slams Bitcoin Developer Jimmy Song For Shading Proof-of-Stake (PoS) Networks Again

0

Hoskinson is apparently in no mood to tolerate Song’s continuous criticism of the Proof-of-Stake network.

Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, has once again slammed long-time Bitcoin developer Jimmy Song for criticizing Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks.

In a recent tweet made by Song, the veteran Bitcoin developer called PoS networks “the ultimate dog and pony show.”

According to Song, in the Proof-of-Stake consensus networks, users are required to vote in a way that pleases centralized controllers or face the risk of losing their money.

“Proof-of-stake is the ultimate dog and pony show. You have to vote the way the centralized controllers want or else you lose your money. It’s got all the honesty of a 100% vote in a dictatorship,” Song noted in a recent tweet.

Cardano Founder Reacts to Song’s Comment

The tweet has attracted a lot of reaction from the cryptocurrency community since it was published. People took to the microblogging platform to express their opinions about the tweet. As expected, enthusiasts of PoS networks slammed Song for making a derogatory post about the Proof-of-Stake network.

Interestingly, the Cardano founder was among those who slammed the Bitcoin developer for his comments on the Proof-of-Stake network.

“I didn’t know Jimmy did sequels, but the stupid is back and boy it did not disappoint,” Hoskinson said.

Song’s Previous Criticism of PoS Networks

It is noteworthy that Song has developed the habit of shading Proof-of-Stake networks in recent times. Last week, the veteran Bitcoin developer described PoS as the worst consensus network, a tweet that prompted reactions from Ethereum co-founders Vitalik Buterin and Hoskinson.

Song noted that PoS networks have not been able to solve the Byzantine Generals problem, which has hindered these projects from providing decentralized consensus.

The claim prompted a reaction from Ethereum’s Buterin, who said:

“Pro-tip: if there’s a long-established tradition of people debating A vs B based on deep arguments touching on math, economics and moral philosophy, and you come along saying ‘B is dumb because of a one-line technicality involving definitions’, you’re probably wrong.”

While Buterin chose to be mild in his response, Hoskinson responded angrily, calling Song’s post stupid.

“The level of stupidity here is beyond explanation,” Hoskinson said.

Kazakhstan Raises Crypto Miner’s Taxes

Cryptocurrency miners in Kazakhstan may face higher tax rates under a new bill signed by the country’s parliament.

Kazakhstan President Tokayev has signed a new piece of legislation amending the country’s law on taxes and other mandatory payments to the budget, as well as a supplemental law to improve the Tax Code’s execution. The changes establish separate tax rates for bitcoin mining.

The precise fees will be decided depending on the average cost of power used to produce coins during a given tax period. They begin at 1 Kazakhstani tenge (about. $0.002 at the time of writing) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) when a miner spent 25 tenge or more ($0.053) per kWh and may exceed 10 tenge if the power rate was in the 5 – 10 tenge ($0.011 – $0.021) range.

Electricity produced from renewable sources is taxed at a rate of 1 tenge per kWh, which is the lowest rate available to crypto farms. After a year of increasing power deficits in Central Asia, that fee was implemented on January 1, 2022. Cryptocurrency miners were accused of causing shortages after China’s May 2021 crackdown on the sector.

Kazakhstan and Crypto Mining

Kazakhstan has sought to curtail cryptocurrency mining by restricting energy supplies and shutting down coin minting operations throughout its regions during the frigid winter months. Some enterprises were obliged to shift to other mining areas or ship large amounts of equipment out of the country as a result of the actions.

All bitcoin miners working in Kazakhstan must be identified and taxed, according to a decree issued by President Tokayev earlier this year. State auditors went after mining companies in April for allegedly taking advantage of tax breaks they weren’t entitled to.

After announcing plans to raise taxes on miners earlier this year, the Nur-Sultan administration proposed tying the new rate to how much the generated bitcoin was worth. In official declarations, new tax restrictions are anticipated to equalize the demand on the power system and discourage the use of locally generated energy in mining.

The Number Of Bitcoin Sharks And Whales Taps Record Highs: Report

Bitcoin whale and shark addresses tap February 2021 highs.

Santiment Feed, in a tweet on Tuesday, reveals that the number of Bitcoin shark and whale accounts has shown significant growth in the last 30 days, with the number of addresses reaching levels last seen in February 2021.

“The amount of Bitcoin addresses holding 10+ BTC has ramped up, particularly since the mid-June drop. In the past 30 days, these addresses have increased by 1.12%. There are 149.2k addresses holding 10 or more BTC, the most held since February, 2021,” Santiment tweeted.

It is worth noting that Bitcoin continues to show increasingly positive fundamentals. Notably, a tweet from Glassnode Alerts on Wednesday shows that Bitcoin deposits on exchanges continue to drop, as previously reported by the Crypto Basic on Tuesday.

“Bitcoin $BTC Number of Exchange Deposits (7d MA) just reached a 2-year low of 2,013.435 … Previous 2-year low of 2,016.685 was observed on 11 July 2022,” tweeted the firm.

In addition, data shows that Bitcoin holders continue accumulating the asset as they believe it is selling at an attractive discount. For example, Santiment on Saturday revealed that Bitcoin sharks had accumulated 52k BTC in 5 weeks.

Nonetheless, the asset’s price continues to struggle as inflation persists and institutional investors remain risk-off. In a tweet on Wednesday, Vetle Lunde, an analyst at Arcane Research, revealed that ProShares short Bitcoin ETF BITI had seen massive inflows as investors anticipate US inflation data later today.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is exchanging hands for $19,525 on mainstream exchanges. It is down by 1% in the last 24 hours and 2.97% in the last seven days.

While several analysts agree that we may be in the final phase of the bear cycle as miners and some long-term holders capitulate, they caution that this phase could last for months.

BREAKING: Massive Win for Ripple as Judge Sarah Netburn Denies SEC’s Attorney-Client Claim Over William Hinman Document

0

Judge Netburn has finally put to rest the SEC’s assertion that William Hinman’s document is protected by attorney-client privilege.

Popular blockchain company Ripple recorded a major win yesterday after Judge Sarah Netburn finally dismissed the SEC’s assertion that William Hinman’s document is protected by attorney-client privilege.

“The SEC’s motion [of attorney-client privilege over Hinman’s documents] is DENIED. Consistent with the Court’s April 11, 2022 Order, the SEC shall submit the two proposed redactions in Entries 29 and 35 for the Court’s in-camera review,” Judge Netburn ruled.

Following the ruling, the SEC has a period of 14 days to file an appeal before Judge Analisa Torres.

Brawl Over Hinman’s 2018 Document

Ripple recorded the victory after engaging in a lengthy argument that lingered for months.

With the SEC charging Ripple for breaching U.S. laws via the offering of unregistered securities in the United States, the blockchain company has sought different means to prove that its native cryptocurrency is not a security.

One of Ripple’s plans on proving that XRP is not a security is by referencing a 2018 speech made by Hinman, SEC’s former director of Corporation Finance.

In the speech, Hinman declared Ethereum (ETH) as a non-security, prompting Ripple to believe that the former Corporation Finance also made reference to XRP, given its popularity at the time.

Based on this, the blockchain company had requested for the SEC’s internal document that led to Hinman’s 2018 speech. However, all efforts to obtain the speech have not yielded positive results, as the SEC continues to keep the document away from Ripple.

At first, the Securities and Exchange Commission asserted that the document was protected by deliberative process privilege (DPP), a motion that was denied by the Court.

Still not relenting, the agency raised another motion, claiming that Hinman discussed the matter with some attorneys in the commission before drafting the speech. Thus, suggesting that Hinman’s 2018 document is protected by attorney-client privilege, with Hinman considered as the client.

The motion did not sit well with Ripple, prompting the company to challenge the SEC’s assertion for months. With none of the parties planning to let go, Judge Netburn invited both parties to a conference held on June 7, 2022.

After the conference, it became clear to many, including FOX Journalist Eleanor Terrett, that Judge Netburn would compel the SEC to produce the internal document.

Judge Netburn requested for 10 exemplar documents, which were reviewed on camera and subsequently prompted the ruling:

“Accordingly, the predominant purpose of the communications was not to provide legal advice to aid the SEC in conducting the public’s business. The documents must be produced.”

XRP Holders Jubilate Massively

The ruling sparked widespread jubilation across various social media platforms. Attorney Jeremy Hogan, a Partner at Hogan & Hogan law firm, commented about the development, saying:

“As much as I enjoyed the legal victory (and the Judge seeing right through the SEC deceit), I was even more glad to see the excitement and happiness on crypto-Twitter, again. It’s been awhile.”

Report: Upbit Parent Company Dunamu Reveals Plan To Create 10,000 Jobs With $380 Million Investment

Upbit parent company reveals expansion and investment plans despite market conditions.

On Tuesday, leading Korean Fintech company Dunamu, operators of leading Korean crypto exchange, Upbit, revealed plans to create 10,000 Web 3 jobs with a $380 million investment over the next five years, according to reports from The Korea Herald.

The company says it will launch two platforms, the “UP Start Incubator” and “UP Start Platform,” to achieve this goal. As per the report, the UP Start Incubator would provide consulting services for early Web 3 startups and firms looking to transition to Web 3. At the same time, the UP Start Platform would connect startups to Dunamu’s investment and subsidiary network.

Dunamu’s goal is to raise 500 startups within this period, creating 8000 jobs, while it plans to hire about 1000 developers.

“Dunamu will contribute to strengthening national industrial competitiveness by actively investing in new future growth industries such as blockchain and creating jobs,” said Dunamu chief Sirgoo Lee.

It is worth noting that Dunamu’s expansion and investment plans come at a difficult time for the crypto markets. The plummeting prices of cryptocurrency in the past eight months have put a lot of strain on the revenue of crypto firms. Notably, several crypto lenders have folded under pressure, some leading crypto exchanges have had to downsize to rein in costs, and miners have capitulated, selling their crypto mining rewards.

As The Crypto Basic reported on June 2, Gemini revealed plans to reduce its headcount by 10%. Barely two weeks later, the largest exchange in the US, Coinbase, followed suit, laying off over 1000 workers.

However, during this time, aside from Upbit, there have been others that have also revealed plans to expand. For example, as previously reported, Binance and Ripple have revealed plans to recruit more talent, with Binance looking to fill 2000 positions.

Financial Regulators In Vermont Join Multistate Investigation Of Embattled Crypto Lender Celsius

0

Vermont regulators go after Celsius.

In a statement on Tuesday, Vermont’s Department of Financial Regulation reveals that it is joining investigations against Celsius as it believes the crypto lender breached securities law and operated without licensing.

“The Department believes Celsius has been engaged in an unregistered securities offering by offering cryptocurrency interest accounts to retail investors,” the statement from the financial regulators read, explaining its motivations. “Celsius also lacks a money transmitter license. This means that until recently, Celsius was operating largely without regulatory oversight.”

According to the regulators, this lack of licensing allowed Celsius to operate without offering full disclosure about its financial condition or how it was able to offer its promised returns.

Furthermore, the department expressed its belief that Celsius is “deeply insolvent and lacks the assets and liquidity to honor its obligations to account holders and other creditors.”

Consequently, the department warned against account holders agreeing to requests from Celsius to put their account in “HODL mode” as a show of customer confidence, saying there is no logic to it as the platform has already halted withdrawals and it accrues no benefit to customers.

Additionally, it warned users against participating in efforts to accumulate the protocol’s native token CEL to drive the price up, liquidating sellers, noting that such price manipulation could breach state and federal laws, and the price of the token could still become worthless.

Celsius account holders have been advised to seek legal counsel on how their holdings may be affected in the event of a bankruptcy filing or lay complaints with the department where necessary. As reported by The Crypto Basic, asset holders with bankrupt Voyager, another crypto lender, may not receive full repayment.

Celsius, a crypto lender with billions of dollars in assets under management, halted withdrawals on June 12, citing unfavorable market conditions. Notably, on June 16, securities regulators in Alabama, Kentucky, New Jersey, Texas, and Washington revealed they were launching an investigation into the matter.

It is worth noting that the firm has so far refused to file for bankruptcy and attempted to settle debts owed to crypto protocols. However, as reported by The Crypto Basic on Monday, Celsius has hired new lawyers, which could lead to a possible change in its approach to insolvency woes.
