FATF Report Finds Only 29 Jurisdictions Passed FATF Standards For Virtual Assets and Crypto Service Providers

0

Update on FATF standards for virtual assets and service providers.

A recent analysis by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on virtual assets reveals that only 29 of 98 countries have met the requirements of the FATF’s “travel rule” to guarantee that cryptocurrency businesses verify the identities of their consumers. Authorities need to move more quickly to verify the identities of crypto users.

FATF’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CFT) Standards have been extended to financial activities involving virtual assets and virtual asset service providers for the past three years in order to respond to the threat of criminal and terrorist misuse of these virtual assets. To enable countries and virtual asset providers properly execute the FATF Standards on virtual assets, FATF has released two worldwide evaluations of their implementation since then.

The study presents a third focused analysis of implementation, with a particular emphasis on the FATF’s Travel Rule. This rule mandates that the private sector gather and transmit recipient and originator information in conjunction with virtual asset transactions.

In addition to this, it offers a concise update on the general implementation of FATF’s Recommendation 15 and its Interpretative Note (R.15/INR.15), as well as newly emerging risks and market developments that FATF continues to monitor. According to the report, some examples of these include decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and unhosted wallets.

In related news, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) said in its plans for 2018 that crypto service providers are required to verify the identities of their consumers. These suggestions were updated in 2019.

However, many people in the sector have protested that it breaches privacy and is poorly intended for payments that are taking place on a public blockchain. The identification checks are expected to enable authorities to follow criminal transactions, just as they do in the traditional banking system.

Leaked Contract Reveals Coinbase May Be Providing User Data To Law Enforcement Agencies

Leaked Contract Reveals Coinbase May Be Providing User Data To Law Enforcement.

A report by The Intercept suggests that Coinbase may be offering user data to US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), as indicated by a leaked contract provided by watchdogs Tech Inquiry.

According to the contract, the leading US exchange, through its analytic program Coinbase Tracer will be providing the ICE with “historical geo tracking data,” amongst others, to aid the law enforcement unit in tracking crypto transactions. The leak provides significant insight into the $1.37 million contract signed by the exchange with the US Department of Homeland Security unit in September 2021.

However, a spokesperson of the leading exchange has refuted claims that this data is being taken from Coinbase users. The spokesperson directed The Intercept to a disclaimer on the company’s website: “Coinbase Tracer sources its information from public sources and does not make use of Coinbase user data.”

However, questions remain on the free reign of use the government agency is given over the analytics tool. It is noted that the ICE was not subject to an End User License Agreement, limiting how the agency can use the software, a standard procedure for such deals. The contract with the ICE is just one of the firm’s numerous deals with law enforcement agencies, putting it in the bad books of some crypto faithful who use the technology because of the reduced government oversight.

Coinbase Tracer itself is rooted in a controversial past. Neutrino, which Coinbase took over in 2019 to create the tool, was formerly run by hackers notorious for selling data to questionable regimes. The latest revelation adds to the list of controversies surrounding the exchange in 2022.

The firm had come under fire in May as excerpts of a new user agreement revealed that users would lose access to their funds should the exchange go bankrupt. Notably, veteran trader Peter Brandt who has historically been known to be critical of the exchange has warned users against holding their digital assets on the platform.

It is worth noting that a recent press release from the EU reveals that regulators in the bloc may require extensive reporting of customer transactions and data, so law enforcement can trace crypto transactions to fight money laundering and terrorism funding.

Notably, Coinbase has been one of the vocal detractors of the said rules.

Coinbase has been one of the worst hit by the crypto downturn this year. Its share prices have fallen significantly, with Goldman Sachs expecting Coinbase’s revenue to drop by 60%. Earlier in June, the company laid off over 1000 workers to reduce costs.

SEC Rejects Grayscale Bitcoin Spot ETF Application and Grayscale Sues SEC

Grayscale is suing the SEC since they denied its application for an ETF.

On Wednesday, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rejected Grayscale Investments’ proposal to convert its $13.5 billion Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) into a spot-based bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), despite the company’s strenuous efforts to secure permission for years.

Michael Sonnenshein, CEO of Grayscale, swiftly turned to Twitter after the notification was issued by the SEC to announce the company’s intention to take legal action. In a statement released by Grayscale, the company is challenging the decision to refuse Grayscale Bitcoin Trust’s conversion into a spot Bitcoin ETF in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Sonnenshein has said that Grayscale’s flagship Bitcoin fund, GBTC, has been overwhelmingly requested to be converted to a spot Bitcoin ETF. According to Ycharts, the GBTC fund is presently trading at a discount or negative premium of 29%.

Back in October 2021, Grayscale submitted paperwork to convert its Bitcoin Trust, also known as GBTC, into an exchange-traded fund (ETF), but the ruling was repeatedly pushed back. Grayscale has applied a great deal of pressure on the watchdog to approve its application, including providing individuals with a means of easily sending in their support by email in a short amount of time.

Grayscale’s senior legal strategist Donald B. Verrilli Jr., a former U.S. solicitor general, and a team of lawyers at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell are now in charge of the case. They are being assisted in their efforts by Grayscale’s in-house legal counsel.

According to Verrilli, the SEC does not apply uniform treatment to identical investment vehicles, and as a result, the agency is behaving arbitrarily and capriciously, which is a violation of both the Administrative Procedure Act and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934.

A subsidiary of Barry Silbert’s Digital Currency Group, Grayscale was formed in 2013. Data, financial products, and exposure to digital assets are offered by the firm. Grayscale has submitted many Bitcoin ETF applications since its inception.

North Korea Might Be Behind A Recent $100 Million US Horizon Bridge Hack

0

Recent cryptocurrency thefts in the amount of one hundred million dollars may have been the work of North Korea.

Three digital investigative agencies came to the conclusion that North Korean hackers were most likely behind an assault that took place last week and stole as much as $100 million worth of cryptocurrency from a corporation in the United States. The story was published by Reuters.

On June 23, crypto assets were taken from Horizon Bridge, a service run by the Harmony blockchain that enables assets to be moved to other blockchains.

Since then, action by the hackers implies they may have links to North Korea, which experts believe is among the most frequent cyber attackers. According to the people who monitor sanctions for the United Nations, Pyongyang is said to use the stolen monies to boost its nuclear and missile programs.

Chainalysis, a blockchain company that is working with Harmony to investigate the attack, said on Tuesday that the method of attack and the high velocity of structured payments to a mixer, which is used to obscure the origin of funds, are similar to previous attacks that were attributed to actors with ties to North Korea. Chainalysis made its statement on Twitter.

According to a study published on Thursday by a different company, Elliptic, there are strong indicators that North Korea’s Lazarus Group may be involved in this heist. These suspicions are based on the nature of the attack as well as the subsequent laundering of the assets that were taken.

Located on the pattern of the transactions, Nick Carlsen, a former FBI analyst who now studies North Korea’s cryptocurrency thefts for TRM Labs, a company based in the United States, claimed that preliminary evidence suggests that this may have been a hack perpetrated by North Korea.

According to the report, the thief is trying to sabotage the chain of events leading back to the initial theft. Cashing out the money at an exchange is made easy by this method.

This would be the seventh incident this year – totaling $1 billion in stolen assets – that can be confidently ascribed to North Korea, or 60% of the total monies taken in 2022, according to Chainalysis.

Experts and South Korean officials told Reuters that the recent decline in bitcoin prices may have hampered North Korea’s ability to cash in on its stolen riches, potentially endangering a major source of money for the sanctions-strapped government.

JPMorgan Says Ongoing Crypto Bear Market Will Soon Come to an End

0

Crypto Bear Market May Not Take Long.

Financial strategists from the investment banking company JPMorgan Chase & Co are confident that the ongoing bear market has reached an advanced stage and it will soon come to an end.

Bloomberg cited a note written by JPMorgan strategists, including Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, stating that the downturn of the cryptocurrency market in the past months is a manifestation of a deleveraging process.

JPMorgan: Crypto Bailouts to Rescue the Situation

The good news is that JPMorgan strategists predict that the ongoing crypto deleveraging cycle may not last long following the growing amount of bailout funds given to companies largely affected by the market dip.

“The current deleveraging cycle may not be very protracted since crypto entities with stronger balance sheets are currently stepping in to help contain the contagion,” the strategist said.

According to JPMorgan strategists, venture-capital funding, which is an important source of capital for the crypto industry, has also continued at a healthy pace between May and June.

For instance, FTX has been given credit to cryptocurrency companies and the exchange is also making moves to acquire some firms that are largely affected by the ongoing market crisis.

Crypto Market Woes

It is no longer news that cryptocurrency-related businesses have been largely affected by a series of events, forcing some companies to take very stringent actions such as staff layoffs and also liquidation.

The crypto market was dealt a heavy blow in February and March following an invasion carried out by Russian forces against Ukraine and the Federal Reserve’s move to curtail rising inflation by increasing interest rates.

While crypto companies tried to stay afloat amid these unfortunate events, Terra ecosystem tokens LUNA and UST crashed tremendously, an incident that rocked the entire crypto market.

Terra’s collapse in May resulted in the failure of Three Arrow Capital (3AC), which had a significant investment in Terra and is now being faced with liquidation.

Popular crypto lending platform Celsius Network was forced to halt users’ assets’ withdrawals, swaps, and transfers following the crypto market collapse.

Furthermore, crypto companies like Coinbase, Crypto.com, and Gemini were forced to slash their number of employees to cope with the downturn in the market.

JPMorgan strategists are of the opinion that the cryptocurrency market has gone beyond a good portion of the current bear market troubles, adding that it is only a matter of time before crypto prices will rally again.

A Possible Suicide As South Korean Police Recover Bodies Of Missing School Girl And Family With Links To Terra Collapse

South Korean Police Recover Bodies Of Missing Family As Findings Indicate Possibility Of A Suicide With Links To Terra Collapse.

A report by Korea JoongAng Daily on Wednesday reveals that the police have recovered the bodies of a missing family and have reason to believe the family may have committed suicide with possible links to the Terra (LUNA) collapse.

A car identified as belonging to the family of missing school girl Cho Yoo-na was found by South Korean law enforcement underwater close to the Songgok Harbor of the Island of Wando. In the vehicle, the police discovered the bodies of Cho Yoo-na and two adults suspected to be Cho’s parents.

While the circumstances that led to the family’s demise remain unclear, preliminary evidence from the police report suggests a possibility of suicide resulting from financial strains brought on by the Terra ecosystem collapse in May.

Investigators searched the parents’ online activity, revealing that their frequent searches included “Luna Coin,” “sleeping pills,” and ways to commit suicide. CCTV footage last saw the family around their rental house on May 30.

10-year-old Cho was reported missing by her school after she didn’t return to school on June 22 as promised by her parents, who had said they were going on a trip for a month. The police report that the family appeared to be in significant financial constraint before their disappearance as stacks of unpaid bills could be found at their home.

The Terra ecosystem collapse in May shook the crypto community significantly and threatened to bring down the entire crypto market. Consequently, about $40 billion of investors’ funds were wiped out. It is worth noting that the police are yet to confirm if Cho’s parents invested in the cryptocurrency.

Notably, there have been several unconfirmed cases of suicide by people who bet all on the asset. However, since the Terra collapse, Terraform Labs’ founder, Do Kwon, has launched a new blockchain, claiming the project failed with no foul play on his part.

Kwon and his team remain under investigation in Singapore and the US, facing multiple lawsuits for their actions leading up to the catastrophic event. As reported by The Crypto Basic on Monday, hacktivist group Anonymous is convinced that Kwon scammed investors and is actively investigating the matter.

Santiment: Shiba Inu Network Activity Surges 35% In 10 Days, As Shib Active Addresses Rise Throughout June

0

Shiba Inu network activity is surging.

Shiba Inu (SHIB) has been recording nice gains in its network activity, which suggests a growing interest in cryptocurrency.

According to data provided by Santiment, an on-chain cryptocurrency data platform that tracks the activities of over 2,000 digital currencies, Shiba Inu network activity has surged by 35% in the past 10 days. The cryptocurrency data provider noted that the meme-based cryptocurrency has seen a lot of “returning network interactions” lately.

The number of Shiba Inu active addresses has also recorded growth in the past 10 days, soaring from a low of 3,800 to 6,500 as of yesterday before the prices of various cryptocurrencies plunged.

Santiment also reports that Shiba Inu has 3921 active addresses in the last 24 hours.

According to Santiment, “Shib active addresses have been rising through June”

Widespread Adoption Fuels Shiba Inu Adoption

Understandably, Shiba Inu’s network activity has been on the increase of late following the massive adoption of the cryptocurrency. As reported, Shiba Inu investors can now purchase Apple products from selected retailers using cryptocurrency.

The digital currency can also be used to buy goods from different merchants across the globe following its recent integration with the Coinbase Commerce platform.

“Whatever your opinion may be on Dogecoin and ShibaInu, it appears as though they are each showing notable increases in network activity. Over the past 10 days especially, DOGE (+32%) and SHIB (+35%) have seen many returning network interactions,” Santiment tweeted.

Shiba Inu is not the only cryptocurrency that has recorded a nice gain in its network activity. The world’s most popular meme-based cryptocurrency Dogecoin also saw its network activity increase in the past 10 days, boasting a 32% surge within the timeframe.

Tron Overtakes Shiba Inu in Market Rankings

The massive surge of user interaction on the Shiba Inu network contributed to a slight growth of the cryptocurrency, which is up 3% in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, despite the fact that Shiba Inu is up 3% while other cryptocurrency assets are currently trading at a loss, the asset class was usurped by Tron (TRX) to become the 14th-largest digital currency.

At the moment $SHIB sits in the 14th position in the global cryptocurrency rankings with a market cap of $5.83 billion, while Tron has a valuation of $5.92 billion.

Shiba Inu is currently trading around $0.0000099, with investors hoping that the price will rally in the coming weeks given the series of updates lined up for the project as well as the widespread adoption.

Ethereum Whales Are Aggressively Buying The 39% ETH Dip, Santiment Data Shows

0

Whales are showing interest in Ethereum.

A tweet from on-chain analytics firm Santiment on Thursday revealed that Ethereum sharks and whales are adding to their bags, a sign that these whales are expecting a sharp rise in the asset’s price soon.

According to the chart shared by Santiment, these big bag holders have been accumulating the digital asset steadily in the last three weeks despite the continued bearish price movement of the asset. It is worth noting that Ethereum has tanked by 39% within the period. According to Santiment, such moves have historically served as a key indicator of future price movements suggesting we could see an upward price surge of Ethereum in the short term.

“Ethereum shark and whale addresses (holding between 100 to 100k $ETH) have collectively added 1.1% more of the coin’s supply to their bags on this -39% dip. Historical evidence points to this tier group having alpha on future price movement,” tweeted the analysts.

Notably, Crypto markets have not been able to match bullish price movements shown last year, despite expectations by several analysts. It is worth noting that many had predicted that Bitcoin would clinch the $100k price point within Q1 2022, and similarly, Ethereum would clinch the $10k price point. However, things have not worked out according to plan in the face of increasingly worrying macroeconomic conditions.

Despite these concerns, it is worth noting that Ethereum maximalists have a reason to be bullish on the asset. The long-awaited “merge” that will see Ethereum migrate to the proof-of-stake Beacon chain is thought to be around the corner.

It is worth noting that the migration of the Ethereum network to proof-of-stake is expected to lead to a rise in the adoption of the DeFi king. This is because the move will not only lead to a significant drop in the network’s carbon footprint but also improve the network’s scalability for cheaper and faster transactions.

While Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has told users to expect the upgrade in August, there are speculations that Buterin could further extend this timeline. As reported by The Crypto Basic on June 11, developers had revealed that there would be a delay in the implementation of the difficulty bomb, a key milestone toward the shift to proof-of-stake. However, lead developer Tim Beiko assured users that a further delay, if any, would not be significant.

Doge Founder Says No One Knows Why Dogecoin Is Beating The Market?, Outperforming BTC, ETH, and SOL

0

Dogecoin Co-Creator Billy Marcus Can’t Explain Why DOGE Outperformed Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana In the Past 24 Hours.

Billy Marcus is inquisitive about why Dogecoin traded higher than other cryptocurrencies.

The world’s largest meme-based cryptocurrency, Dogecoin (DOGE), had an outstanding performance yesterday amid the slight turbulence that has rocked the crypto market in the last 24 hours.

DOGE Outperforms Other Top 10 Cryptos

The cryptocurrency boasted a nearly 10% gain in the last 24 hours, which saw it move from a low of $0.0645 to $0.071 within the timeframe.

Although the value of Dogecoin has dipped to $0.067 at the time of writing, it is currently up trading at a 2.5% gain compared to other popular cryptocurrencies in the top 10 global crypto rankings.

Crypto assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Cardano (ADA), and Ripple (XRP) are all down 0.8%, 3.8%, 1.5%, 2.3%, and 2.6%, respectively. Solana (SOL) has recorded the most losses, trading at a loss of 7.6% in the last 24 hours.

Earlier this week, Dogecoin recorded a surge of nearly 120% in the volume of large transactions made in a day.

Marcus Surprised at DOGE’s Outstanding Performance

Following the outstanding performance of Dogecoin over other crypto assets in the top 10 rankings, Billy Marcus, the co-creator of Dogecoin, was amazed by DOGE’s recent performance.

Marcus was prompted to ask his followers to give insights into why the memecoin is rallying ahead of other digital currencies.

“Hey look, dogecoin is up today and most other cryptos are down. Reason: who the f.ck knows,” Marcus, who goes by the pseudonym Shibetoshi Nakamoto, tweeted.

The Motive Behind Marcus’ Tweet

Apparently, Marcus’ tweet was made as a sarcasm to some members of the Dogecoin community, who have always asked him to explain why the cryptocurrency is losing value.

The outspoken Dogecoin co-founder may be sending a message to the community that it is not every time one can explain what is causing the value of a cryptocurrency to rise and fall.

Meanwhile, despite DOGE’s outstanding performance over other digital currencies, the cryptocurrency is still far from its previous all-time high of $0.73.

At Dogecoin’s current price of $0.067, the cryptocurrency is down 90.9% from its previous all-time high recorded on May 8, 2022.

With current events happening in the market, it may take long before the meme coin will rally to its previous highs. Even Marcus said last week that Dogecoin investors may never see the cryptocurrency at $0.73.
