Public Firms Have Already Amassed 196,000 Bitcoin in 2025, Exceeding Total Estimated 2025 Supply

Public companies continue to aggressively accumulate Bitcoin at an unprecedented pace, with their purchases so far already exceeding the total estimated 2025 supply.

According to André Dragosch, European Head of Research at Bitwise, public corporations have already purchased 196,207 BTC in 2025, surpassing the new Bitcoin supply within the same timeframe.

Public Firms Purchase More Bitcoin Than Annual Supply

Particularly, the new Bitcoin supply has so far injected 60,044 tokens into the market, indicating that corporations have bought over 3.3 times that amount. More interestingly, their acquisitions already exceed the full year estimated annual issuance of 164,250 BTC.

This intense accumulation trend is not limited to public firms alone. Investment vehicles like ETFs have also been relentless in their pursuit of Bitcoin, adding over 59,000 BTC to their holdings in 2025 alone.

These acquisitions, worth more than $6.15 billion, contribute to the supply crunch narrative. With both institutional funds and corporate treasuries scooping up more Bitcoin than what miners are producing, a potential supply shock might be looming.

Bitcoin Acquisitions in May 2025 Alone

Recent acquisition data indicates that in May 2025, Twenty One Capital entered the discussion. Despite being a new entrant, the firm has quickly become one of the top corporate holders of Bitcoin, now ranking third among public companies with a Bitcoin balance of 31,500 BTC valued at approximately $3.2 million.

Another notable buyer is Metaplanet, which purchased 1,241 BTC three days back. Similarly, companies such as KULR and Semler Scientific made significant entries in May, with KULR investing $4 million into Bitcoin.

No discussion of corporate Bitcoin accumulation is complete without spotlighting Strategy. The company continues to dominate the landscape, having bought 106,085 BTC in Q1 2025 alone.

About 197 Entities Now Hold Over 3M Bitcoin

In May, it increased its holdings by 15,285 BTC, bringing its total stash to a staggering 568,840 BTC, valued at approximately $58.3 billion. Strategy now ranks as the second-largest Bitcoin holder in the world, trailing only behind BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, which currently holds 625,054 BTC worth $64.08 billion.

Data from Bitcointreasuries.net reveals the magnitude of institutional involvement. Currently, 197 entities, including public and private companies, ETFs, governments, smart contracts, and custodians, collectively hold around 3.32 million BTC, representing over 16% of the circulating supply.

ETFs and investment funds account for the largest chunk, with 1.343 million BTC. Public firms hold 786,857 BTC in their treasuries. Government holdings stand at 527,737 BTC, while private companies such as Tether, Block, and SpaceX control a combined 286,297 BTC.

Among public firms, MARA Holdings trails Strategy with 48,237 BTC valued at $4.94 billion, while Riot Platforms and Galaxy Digital follow with 19,211 BTC and 13,704 BTC, respectively. Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor has projected that 700 public companies will hold BTC by next year.

Here Is the Timeline for Bitcoin to Reach $200,000 According to Bitwise CIO

0

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan outlines a timeline for higher Bitcoin prices, citing ETF inflows and growing corporate and government demand.

Bitcoin continues to hover near $102,578, following a recent flirtation with the $105,000 level. However, despite short-term price cooling, market participants remain focused on long-term indicators, particularly those suggesting strong demand momentum.

For instance, Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan, in an interview with David Lin on May 14, maintains a projection that Bitcoin will reach $200,000 by year-end, citing increased institutional activity, improving regulatory frameworks, and government involvement as primary catalysts.

Matt Hougan said that Bitcoin hadn’t already surged due to a period of significant economic uncertainty, which had affected not only Bitcoin but all risk assets. He explained that stocks were also down substantially, and the broader market had dipped as a result.

However, he expressed confidence that, over time, as economic volatility eased, all the positive developments surrounding Bitcoin would catch up and ultimately propel it to new all-time highs.

Institutional and Government Demand Lead the Narrative

Matt Hougan emphasized that Bitcoin’s supply remains capped at 21 million, with just 165,000 new coins mined annually. Against this limited supply, demand has surged across multiple fronts.

According to Hougan, ETFs purchased 500,000 Bitcoin in the previous year—over triple the new annual supply. In addition, corporations such as MicroStrategy and Metaplanet acquired more Bitcoin.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government already holds over $17 billion in Bitcoin. Current administration policies under President Donald Trump have created an atmosphere that supports further accumulation.

A recent executive order has tasked the Secretaries of Treasury and Commerce with sourcing additional Bitcoin without burdening taxpayers.

This initiative could involve selling portions of the nation’s gold reserves or other crypto assets. Furthermore, reports confirmed that Abu Dhabi purchased $460 million worth of Bitcoin, with several other governments exploring similar moves.

He remarked: “I think you’re going to see 10 — maybe more — governments around the world make their first allocation to Bitcoin this year.”

Other Watchers Eyeing $200,000

Separately, Gautam Chhugani, Senior Analyst at Bernstein, reiterated the firm’s long-standing forecast of $200,000 by 2025, stating that election outcomes would not affect Bitcoin’s trajectory.

Supporting this view, Intuit Trading, founder of Blockchaindaily, reported that Bitcoin exceeded prior expectations. After bottoming at $74,000 in April, the asset has climbed steadily. The analyst now follows a revised trendline that suggests a faster trajectory, projecting a $200,000 price by July 2025 based on current momentum.

Bitcoin would need to increase by approximately 94.98% to go from $102,578 to $200,000.

Cardano Founder Targets XRP Holders in Massive Airdrop To End Crypto Tribalism

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson is launching a VC-free token distribution across eight blockchains, including the XRP Ledger, with the aim of ending “crypto tribalism.”

At Consensus 2025 in Toronto, Hoskinson reiterated the groundbreaking airdrop, dubbed the Glacier Drop, as part of the rollout for Midnight, Cardano’s upcoming privacy-focused sidechain.

The airdrop will target 37 million addresses across eight major blockchains, including holders of XRP, Bitcoin, and Cardano itself. The Glacier Drop will distribute two native Midnight tokens: NIGHT, a governance token, and DUST, for private transactions.

No Venture Capital, No Insiders: Only Retail Users

Departing from traditional token launches, Hoskinson confirmed that no venture capitalists or early insiders will receive Midnight tokens. He called attention to the airdrop’s simplicity and fairness during the event.

Specifically, the system will allocate the airdrop to retail users. Hoskinson described the move as a principled stand against what he called “VC Ponzi” dynamics in crypto. Notably, token recipients will be free to trade, keep, or discard the assets.

Aiming to End Crypto Tribalism

Midnight’s Glacier Drop spans eight networks: Cardano, Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, XRP Ledger, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, and BAT (Basic Attention Token). Hoskinson hopes to move beyond the tribalism that often divides crypto communities by bridging these ecosystems.

“Every Consensus, there is a new token shouting ‘my thing is better than yours,’” he remarked, calling for a change from competitive to cooperative economics.

Other industry leaders like Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and attorney John Deaton are also advocating for collaborative efforts over the typical rivalry that has plagued the crypto ecosystem. They stressed that the industry grows stronger through unity rather than existing in separate factions.

Garlinghouse put his words into action when he advocated for a national U.S. crypto reserve that includes various crypto assets, rather than one that favors only a single coin, such as Bitcoin.

Meanwhile, Hoskinson views the upcoming Glacier Drop, along with Midnight’s unique approach to privacy and collaboration, as important for onboarding the next wave of crypto users, especially as Big Tech enters the space.

“This is the project I’m having the most fun with,” he said, “because it’s where I get to be friends with everybody.”

Midnight’s Privacy and Collaborative Economics

Beyond the airdrop, the upcoming Midnight mainnet introduces a new economic model that allows developers to pay transaction fees in the native token of their own chain. Specifically, ETH is used for Ethereum developers, SOL is used for Solana, and so on.

Validators from various chains will also be able to participate in maintaining the Midnight network and earn rewards, regardless of blockchain affiliation. Currently in testnet, the team plans to unveil Midnight’s mainnet by late 2025.

MetaMask Still Considering Token Launch, Co-founder Confirms

0

MetaMask, the leading Ethereum wallet developed by ConsenSys, is still evaluating the launch of a native token, which, if pursued, will be announced directly within the wallet.

During a recent conversation on The Crypto Beat podcast, MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay suggested that a token launch remains under consideration. However, he avoided confirming any imminent action.

His cautious response highlighted concerns over user safety and phishing risks, especially as public speculation around a potential MASK token continues. Despite earlier discussions and hints from ConsenSys leadership, including CEO Joseph Lubin, the wallet provider is proceeding cautiously due to security and compliance challenges.

Cautious Messaging Amid Speculation

Notably, the discussion around a MetaMask token began as early as 2021 when MetaMask engineer Erik Marks introduced the idea during a developer call. At the time, the focus was on enabling community ownership, rather than financial speculation.

Lubin later supported the narrative with a cryptic “Wen $MASK?” post. In 2022, he outlined plans for a DAO connected to the token, designed as a funding mechanism rather than a governance tool. The project aimed to avoid short-term exploitation, specifically by airdrop hunters.

Finlay, however, has emphasized the risk of speculation, warning that fake token announcements have become a phishing vector. He advised that any legitimate token release would be announced directly through official MetaMask channels, including the wallet interface and its main website.

Regulatory Landscape Could Influence Timeline

In light of shifting regulatory conditions, Finlay acknowledged that a more permissive stance under the Trump administration could open new possibilities. He referenced the idea that projects might soon be able to “push the boundaries” within evolving legal frameworks.

Despite this, he maintained that current laws still treat many token launches as securities offerings. He described the legal environment as a “gray area” for many projects, reflecting ongoing uncertainty about compliance.

Nevertheless, he indicated that these conditions might pave the way for more experimentation, though MetaMask continues to approach the matter with restraint.

Product Updates Prioritize Multi-Chain Integration

While the token discussion remains unresolved, MetaMask has continued to develop its platform with broader goals in mind. In February, the wallet provider shared a roadmap that includes integration with Bitcoin and Solana.

Notably, the Solana network becomes the first blockchain outside the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) ecosystem to be supported.

This update, expected in May, is part of MetaMask’s effort to expand access for non-crypto-native users. Meanwhile, Bitcoin support is scheduled for rollout in Q3.

‘XRP Didn’t Come All This Way Just to Go Back Down to $0.60,’ OG Investor Says, Eyes $11.34

Alex Cobb, a popular XRP community OG, has stirred fresh optimism with a bold projection that places XRP at two digits by the end of this year.

Backed by technical and macroeconomic factors, Cobb argues that XRP’s long consolidation phase and favorable regulatory developments are setting the stage for a historic breakout.

Long Consolidation Is Strength, Not Weakness

Cobb cited XRP’s multi-month price structure as a major reason for his confidence. He emphasized that XRP didn’t rally to a swing high of $3.40, consolidate for several weeks, and successfully retest a key support level, only to fall back to $0.60.

His statement aims to dismiss widespread calls for a major XRP retracement since the coin touched $3 in January. For instance, trader Crashius Clay once boldly asserted that XRP would “dump the hardest” among prominent crypto assets, disclosing his short position. Other analysts have even projected a likely drop below $1.

However, these bearish predictions have yet to materialize. The April tariff-related FUD, which sent broader crypto markets tumbling, failed to break XRP’s structure.

Cobb emphasized that the weight of pessimism at the time should have crushed XRP’s price. For context, the U.S. stock market lost $10 trillion in days, while Bitcoin tanked to its lowest point of the year at $ 74K.

Meanwhile, XRP dipped to $1.61 and has since rebounded above $2.50 as of today. According to Cobb, this rebound signals that the downside risk has already been tested and rejected. As a result, he expressed strong conviction in XRP’s strength and performance for the remainder of this cycle.

Regulatory Clarity and Institutional Green Lights

Another factor bolstering his optimism is the emerging trend of regulatory green lights for crypto assets. Major agencies, including the FDIC and Federal Reserve, have lifted previous restrictions on banks’ engagement with crypto.

Cobb believes this marks a turning point for XRP. With regulators signaling approval and infrastructure improving, banks and institutional investors are now poised to “play ball,” he said.

Trump’s Support for XRP

Perhaps most notably, Cobb highlighted political backing for XRP as a game-changer. President Donald Trump, in March, mentioned XRP by name and suggested its possible inclusion in a U.S. national crypto stockpile.

Such recognition from the highest tier of government adds weight to the narrative around XRP. As a result, even longtime XRP critics like Davinci Jeremie have suggested the token could rise to $24 this year.

On-Chain Ecosystem and Ripple’s Strategic Moves

Meanwhile, Ripple is also fueling bullish momentum with what Cobb describes as “aggressive acquisitions.”

Notably, the company acquired Hidden Road for $1.25 billion last month. This prime broker will migrate its post-trade transactions to the XRP Ledger.

Cobb also cited hints that Ripple may be pursuing a new acquisition deal with Circle, the second-largest stablecoin issuer behind Tether. He sees all these developments as bullish for XRP.

Also, RLUSD activity, increased total value locked (TVL) from automated market makers (AMMs), and meme coin participation are boosting network activity. They position the XRP Ledger as a rising DeFi and liquidity hub.

Targeting $11.34 by End of 2025 with Room for More

Cobb, an XRP holder since 2017, believes the stars are aligning. In his words, all the puzzle pieces are coming together “for the perfect XRP price explosion.”

His conservative price target stands at $11.34 by the end of 2025. Since he considers this a minimum, he sees the potential for even higher valuations if institutional capital floods in.

Top Analyst Says the Only Way for XRP Is Up

The only way for XRP now is up, according to widely followed trader CryptoWZRD, who projects a new all-time high for the coin.

XRP has again surged past $2.61 for the second time this week. The coin now boasts an impressive weekly gain of 22% amid a renewed attempt to reach the long-cherished $3 price level. XRP’s ongoing price action has many analysts speculating on how high it could go this time before another pause.

New All-Time High “Inevitable”

CryptoWZRD is among those offering bullish predictions. According to him, XRP is now on an “up-only” trend, steadily grinding higher.

He noted that the coin held its ground during the most recent downturn, which saw a retest of the $1.60 level. With XRP now above $2.61, up 62% from that low, CryptoWZRD warned skeptics to stop fighting the trend. He asserted that a new all-time high is inevitable for XRP.

Accompanying the update is a weekly XRP chart highlighting its historical price action since 2014. It shows how XRP broke out to an all-time high after a three-year consolidation between 2014 and 2017.

The chart also suggests that the longer consolidation period from 2018 has now ended and that there is significant room for price levels to surpass XRP’s previous peak. Notably, CryptoWZRD’s chart indicates XRP could soar to $5.90 during this current leg, implying a 126% gain from today’s price.

Image
CryptoWZRD’s XRP weekly chart projecting $5.9

Interestingly, a $5.90 price point would place XRP’s market cap above $345 billion, higher than Ethereum’s current valuation of $317 billion.

While this hints at the possibility of XRP flipping Ethereum, the path may be difficult, as ETH bulls have returned. The coin has surged 43% in the last seven days, double XRP’s gain.

Other Projections for XRP Peak Amid Breakout

Meanwhile, other market commentators are weighing in on XRP’s breakout, including Good Morning Crypto podcast host Abdullah Nassif, known as Abs.

In a tweet, Abs claimed that XRP’s breakout is gaining momentum and invited community members to share their price targets. The chart accompanying his tweet showed potential peaks of $8 and $27 for XRP, based on historical Fibonacci levels.

These levels aligned with the 1.272 and 1.618 Fibonacci extensions, which defined XRP’s price movement during the 2017–2018 rally.

Image
XRP price chart by Abs

Also, some analysts are predicting XRP’s potential in this cycle by drawing inspiration from its historical market dominance during previous peaks.

For instance, trader DK64Trades stated that XRP could easily surpass $10 this year. He compared XRP’s current market dominance (~5%) to its 2018 peak (~31%) when the price reached $3.84. He believes a return to similar dominance levels could drive the price significantly higher.

On the other hand, analyst Capt Toblerone projects a $1.25 trillion market cap for XRP in a full-fledged crypto bull market with a global crypto valuation of $35 trillion. Based on this valuation, XRP’s price could reach $22 per token.

Trump Says America Is Beating China in the Crypto Sector

0

President Donald Trump suggests that America’s pro-crypto stance is already yielding positive results, declaring the U.S. dominance over China in the crypto space.

It’s well known that the U.S. and China have been embroiled in a heated tariff war for months. This trade war escalated in April, with the United States imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese goods. Notably, China reciprocated and slammed a 125% tariff on goods imported from the United States.

In the meantime, both countries have reached an agreement, with China’s tariff dropping to 10% while the U.S. lowered its own to 30%.

US Winning in China in Crypto

When it seemed like the trade tension between the countries was fading, Trump recently declared that the United States is winning against China in crypto. Popular financial market reporter Walter Bloomberg shared an excerpt of Trump’s comment in a tweet today.

“We are winning China in the crypto sector,’ Trump remarked.

His comment portrays the United States and China as rivals in the race to dominate the crypto industry. Before his reelection, Trump had been committed to helping the United States dominate the sector. In his view, America should be the crypto capital of the world.

Crypto Mining

Last month, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick disclosed that Trump’s administration is dedicated to supporting Bitcoin mining companies through the Investment Accelerator initiative.

He revealed miners can run their operations off-grid by building power plants that run on waste gas instead of relying on local utilities. According to him, these power plants can be sited near where miners intend to run their data mining centers.

In contrast, China has taken a more restrictive approach. In 2021, it launched a sweeping crackdown on crypto mining, and since then, it has not openly embraced the industry to the extent seen in the United States. Meanwhile, underground mining activities continue to thrive in China.

Regulation

China has continued to be strict against crypto assets, prohibiting their use in payments and investment. However, the U.S. is pushing to establish clear crypto regulation as part of its efforts to foster innovation in the space.

Through his family-backed crypto project World Liberty Financial, Trump has even invested in multiple cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Interestingly, his son Eric Trump recently disclosed that the president himself owns lots of BTC tokens.

Bitcoin Holdings

China still holds about 194,000 Bitcoin in its blockchain wallets despite its strict stance. However, China’s Bitcoin holdings are still less than the United States’ 198,012 BTC, which it acquired through civil and criminal forfeitures.

Trump Says He’s a Big Fan of Crypto

Meanwhile, Trump reiterated his support for crypto, emphasizing that he is a big fan of digital assets. This is evident in the numerous supports he has given the industry since the beginning of his administration.

Trump has solidly backed the industry by appointing several pro-crypto officials to his cabinet and advocating for clear crypto regulation. Interestingly, he issued an executive order to set up a national crypto reserve in the United States for top assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Through these efforts, the US hopes to maintain its leadership in the cryptocurrency sector.

Bitfarms Halts Argentina Bitcoin Mining After Power Cut, 13% of Capacity Goes Offline

Bitfarms, one of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining companies, has suspended all operations at its mining facility in Argentina.

The shutdown follows a notice from its electricity supplier, Generación Mediterránea S.A. (GMSA), which informed the company that it would halt power indefinitely, effective May 12. The affected Río Cuarto site contributes approximately 13% of Bitfarms’ total mining capacity.

As disclosed in its Q1 2025 MD&A report, GMSA is undergoing a financial restructuring process and has appointed advisors to manage its debt negotiations. Initially, the supplier had assured Bitfarms it could continue operations at the site.

However, the sudden change in circumstances forced a complete power shutdown, prompting a full pause in the company’s crypto mining activity in the region.

No Broader Crypto Crackdown in Argentina, Says VanEck Analyst

Matthew Sigel, Head of Digital Assets Research at VanEck, highlighted the development on X. He stated that the issue appears to be isolated to GMSA’s financial difficulties and does not indicate a broader anti-crypto stance by the Argentine government.

Still, the news triggered concern among investors, sending Bitfarms (BITF) stock down approximately 6%. The company noted that it is evaluating its options and seeking a resolution. However, it has not provided a timeline for a potential resumption of operations.

Implications Not Yet Reflected in Financials

Notably, Bitfarms categorized the power shutdown as a “non-adjusting subsequent event,” meaning its financial impact is not yet factored into the impairment analysis for Q1 2025. If the electricity issue persists, it could significantly affect the company’s hash rate and future earnings from its Argentine operations.

Bitfarms’ Q1 Bitcoin Mining Performance

Bitfarms operates 15 active data centers across countries, including Canada, the United States, and Paraguay. In Q1 2025, the firm mined 693 BTC at an average direct production cost of $47,800 per Bitcoin, with a total cash cost of $72,300.

The company improved its operational efficiency, achieving 19 watts per terahash, a 44% year-over-year improvement, and increased its hash rate to 19.5 exahashes, up 200% from Q1 2024.

Bitfarms also sold 428 BTC during the quarter for $37 million and an additional 350 BTC in April for $30 million. As of mid-May, it holds 1,166 BTC.

The company continues to leverage its mining business as a stable, cash-generating base while advancing its strategic shift toward high-performance computing (HPC) and AI infrastructure.

Ethereum Foundation Announces “Trillion Dollar” Security Initiative: Details

0

The Ethereum Foundation has announced a new initiative aimed at boosting security and scalability across the Ethereum ecosystem.

On Wednesday, the Ethereum Foundation announced plans to scale the network’s security beyond its current capabilities. In a blog post, the non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Ethereum network disclosed the launch of a trillion-dollar security initiative.

The announcement claimed that Ethereum is the most secure blockchain in the industry, owing to its 10 years of continuous improvement across its technology stack. This thorough diligence has cut across its wallet UX, developer tooling, and consensus model security.

Nonetheless, it plans to extend the network’s security features, hence the latest venture. The Foundation named the new strategy the “trillion-dollar security initiative,” subdivided into three components to enhance thoroughness and efficiency.

Three Pillars of Ethereum Security Initiative

With the Ethereum Foundation focused on developing a civilization-scale ecosystem that beats traditional systems and supports web3 and the global economy, the new initiative would first gather data on the network’s infrastructure.

The mapping process would identify the strengths and possible loopholes in the Ethereum network, spanning a wide range of domains, such as user experience (UX), wallet, smart contract, and infrastructure security, consensus protocol integrity, and internet infrastructure.

Meanwhile, an execution process would follow the mapping, with the involved parties improving the weaknesses identified in the previous step. High-priority discoveries will be fixed in the near term, while others will be scheduled for longer-term implementation.

Lastly, the Trillion Dollar Security Initiative would focus on educating users on Ethereum’s security. This community-centric measure would allow daily network participants to understand and appreciate its security features. They could also evaluate and compare the outfit with those seen on other blockchains and legacy systems.

Key Players in Latest Initiative

The Ethereum Foundation further announced key contributors to the effective implementation of the 1TS initiative. Prominent figures like Fredrik Svantes, the Foundation’s protocol security lead, and Josh Stark, the firm’s management team, will spearhead this campaign.

Nonetheless, three ecosystem experts would also drive the security project. Samczsun, the founder of the Security Alliance (SEAL), would support the co-chairs, with Mehdi Zerouali and Zach Obront also contributing their input.

However, the Ethereum Foundation also solicits contributions from the broader ecosystem for a well-rounded implementation. The NGO seeks community participation to thoroughly identify security drawdowns that need fixing.

Interestingly, this initiative comes at a time when institutional interest in crypto and Ethereum is swelling. Asset manager VanEck recently launched its tokenized treasury funds (VBILL) on the Ethereum network, joining the likes of BlackRock and Franklin Templeton.
