Hackers used Hewlett Packard (HP) servers to mine nonpopular and unfamiliar crypto.

Hackers exploited a vulnerability in the popular Log4j library to gain control over AMD EPYC-based servers for mining Raptoreum coin as reported by Tom’s Hardware.

The Raptoreum developers first discovered an abnormal hash rate growth on the network on December 9th. The number of devices involved in the mining of the coin grew at an abnormal pace, and the total computing power on the day of the hack doubled sharply from 200 MH/s to 400 MH/s.

The Raptoreum team discovered that the attackers used compromised HP’s AMD-based 9000 EPYC servers, turning the powerful hardware into cryptocurrency miners.

The hackers were able to obtain about 3.4 million Raptoreum tokens worth over $80,000 at the time of writing. Subsequently, 1.5 million tokens were sold on the CoinEx crypto exchange. The rest of the assets remain in the wallet.

“Log4J is a Java vulnerability recently outed as part of the famous Apache suite and merited the highest-possible threat classification (10) under the “CVSS 3.0″ guidelines. This is because the exploit doesn’t require physical access and allows for escalation of privileges to trick the system into connecting to, downloading, and running malware from a hacker-controlled server.”

Hackers are using this Log4j vulnerability to install hidden miners and other malware on systems. The bug is potentially the most serious one found in recent years.
