Tornado Cash Sanctions Prove DeFi Regulation Is Inevitable

0

Last week’s decision by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to sanction the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash was the first major action against such a service, and could well prove to be a transformational event on DeFi’s road to mainstream recognition.

That’s because the impacts of that decision have had such magnitude that DeFi leaders will have no option but to recognize that regulation is the only way for the industry to grow beyond its current niche audience.

Last week, the OFAC slapped Tornado Cash with heavy sanctions as a result of it enabling malicious actors, including a group of North Korea-linked hackers, to process illegal transactions totaling over $1.5 billion. The sanctions come with severe consequence’s, as they mean that all U.S. individuals and entities are now barred from using Tornado Cash, and face criminal penalties if they choose to do so anyway.

Tornado Cash is a so-called mixer service that people can use to hide the source of their crypto transactions. All funds sent to the protocol are directed into a larger pool that mixes all of its user’s tokens, before they can be withdrawn again. In this way, it becomes impossible to tell where those funds came from.

While advocates say Tornado Cash has legitimate privacy use cases for a decentralized Web3, the platform has also become a favorite tool of cybercriminals, who have used it to launder billions of dollars worth of stolen funds. This includes more than $455 million of the over $600 million that was stolen from the Ronin blockchain network that hosts the popular Axie Infinity “play-to-earn” game.

In addition to the sanctions, the U.S. Treasury Departments OFAC also blacklisted multiple wallet addresses belonging to Tornado Cash. The sanctions further block any assets held by the platform that fall under U.S. jurisdiction, and prohibit U.S. citizens and companies from transacting with it.

While the sanctions will almost certainly make it more difficult for criminals to use Tornado Cash to launder stolen funds, they also signal a new chapter in the story of DeFi, which is an alternative and completely unregulated financial system – there can be no escape from regulation.

Miller Whitehouse-Levine, policy director at research and advocacy group DeFi Education Fund, told the Wall Street Journal that the sanctions will have “deep implications” in the future. “The industry’s impression is that the U.S. government is pivoting from focusing on punishing bad actors to policing the protocols,” he said.

DeFi Regulation To Accelerate

With Tornado Cash now sanctioned and its servers and source code taken offline as a direct consequence of that move, it seems inevitable that regulatory scrutiny on the DeFi sector will increase.

Traditionally, the leading DeFi protocols have brushed off calls for regulation, simply shrugging their shoulders and saying that it’s impossible to regulate the sector due to its decentralization. However, a rethink could well be in order if DeFi is to grow and fulfill its potential as a genuine alternative to traditional finance that can appeal to the masses.

One of the first steps in this will be the acceptance of regulator’s motives, which entails rejecting the popular opinion that governments simply want to shut down DeFi. Rather, their primary intention is to simply suppress financial criminals, without killing off the game-changing potential of DeFi to “bank the unbanked”.

We have proof of these positive intentions. Earlier this year, the Financial Action Task Force published a report that highlighted how cross-chain bridges have successfully helped to grow DeFi. However, the same report also pointed out that this innovation is aiding criminals in moving funds across networks more swiftly, complicating authorities’ efforts to prevent money laundering. As we can see, regulators’ main focus is on preventing crime, not stopping DeFi from doing what it’s doing.

Given the attention DeFi has attracted, it seems clear that developers in the space will have no choice but to acknowledge they’re going to need to come to an understanding with DeFi regulators on matters pertaining to compliance. If they don’t, and their projects fall under the regulator’s crosshairs, they will almost certainly be presented with serious challenges due to their inaction.

DeFi developers have long argued that it’s impossible to truly regulate DeFi. They say that regulation involves subjecting a centralized authority to certain rules, and punishing them for non-compliance. Because DeFi does not have any centralized authority, they claim it isn’t possible to regulate DeFi.

However, the sanctions placed on Tornado Cash prove that DeFi protocols can indeed be severely punished, and it seems unlikely that the service will recover – even if it does manage to come back online.

The good news is that there are already some initiatives in the DeFi sector that are happy to work with regulators. They include projects like Phree, which is attempting to build compliance protocols in anticipation of forthcoming regulation.

Phree acknowledges that regulating DeFi is difficult and that protocols cannot be subject to rules and punishments. However, in order to breathe DeFi does require onramps and offramps into the traditional world of finance. People need a place to be able to exchange their crypto for fiat, and it’s these services that can be subject to rules that must be complied with.

To that end, Phree is building a compliant DeFi ecosystem-as-a-service platform and a licensed asset manager that developers can use to create transparent and permissionless protocols that will attract more mainstream investors. Basically, it will be able to enforce that DeFi users undergo KYC and AML before interacting with these protocols. By doing this, Phree believes it can address the challenge of what happens if funds go missing due to a “rugpull” or a hack that takes advantage of smart contract vulnerabilities.

Initiatives like Phree have led to the realization that there is a big opportunity in DeFi. The world’s biggest financial institutions see compliance as a must-have before they can inject liquidity into a DeFi project, even if they see the potential of it. Serious investors will not sink their money into a protocol that ends up on a U.S. blacklist as a result of some North Korean hacker abusing it. As such, it’s likely that DeFi projects that continue to ignore calls for regulation will fall by the wayside, while those that do agree to subject themselves to greater controls will prosper amid the growing interest of traditional financial players.

There’s reason to believe DeFi will embrace regulation soon. Already, Phree has struck partnerships with the likes of PwC Switzerland and Mastercard and is planning to launch its platform next year. When that happens, we can expect it to give birth to a number of compliant, yet still decentralized protocols.

More than anything else, the Tornado Cash sanctions show us that the prospect of regulation in DeFi cannot be ignored. While compliance will scare away the crypto diehards who refuse to accept any kind of governmental interference, the vast majority of users will continue to follow the money trail. After all, one of the greatest attractions of DeFi is the opportunity to make more money. As institutional investors look for newer investment avenues, it’ll be the most compliant DeFi protocols that are best positioned to attract this new money.

When Will DeFi and TradFi Intersect?

0

DeFi or Decentralized Finance has been at odds with TradFi for years now. The differences between these two sectors were once considered irreconcilable, however, although today we can see that these two will eventually intersect, when will this occur?

With DeFi becoming more and more popular, many have assumed TradFi will slowly die down as DeFi takes over. However, this doesn’t seem to tell the whole story, with TradFi introducing some of DeFi’s conveniences into their platforms, it only seems like a matter of time before the two meet.

Today, we’ll be going over the main barriers for DeFi and TradFi to intersect, what it will take to overcome these roadblocks, and SOMA Finance, one of the few DeFi apps fast approaching this intersection.

Barriers To Intersection And How To Overcome Them

Regulatory Difficulties

DeFi projects have been facing regulatory difficulties ever since their inception. These issues are intensified when talking about US-based securities. While there are platforms with the necessary credentials to trade US securities, what currently exists is severely limited.

The main ways to overcome these issues are to either lower regulatory requirements for DeFi services, or for DeFi services to work hard to pursue the necessary licenses and compliances to trade US securities.

Trust And Adoption Rate

DeFi platforms are still less trusted worldwide when compared to their TradFi counterparts. This is in part due to DeFi’s novelty, and in part because it can be difficult to trust a decentralized authority over one we’re used to. However, with banks starting to notice DeFi platforms, as well as DeFi showing excellent performance, this issue is slowly being alleviated.

The other issue is adoption rate. For DeFi and TradFi to intersect, they’d have to share a majority of their users. However, DeFi platforms currently have far fewer users than something like the Bank of America. The main way to solve this issue is simply for DeFi to keep putting up good results and for us to keep spreading the word about DeFi applications.

DeFi Platforms Are Harder To Tax

This is another issue that gets intensified in the US. While digital transactions made with cryptocurrencies are taxable, reporting said taxes isn’t easy. With most DeFi applications being built on permissionless and pseudonymous blockchains, it can be quite difficult to report these assets on your tax form. In fact, a study made by Barclays states that the IRS might be missing out on up to $50 billion in unpaid blockchain taxes each year.

Since there are no intermediaries that would enforce taxing in the DeFi world and verify your identity, it can be quite difficult to fill out taxes when trading with crypto. We can resolve this by introducing measures to ensure proper taxes are paid in DeFi applications, and by creating software that can help calculate your crypto tax. Alternatively, DeFi applications might even partner up with TradFi to help them ensure everything is in order.

SOMA Finance- One Of The First Licensed Tokenized Security DEXs

Outside of the issues outlined above, many raise questions of security, and there’s the simple issue of what you can trade on DEXs as opposed to TradFi. There’s no debate that being able to trade companies like Apple or Tesla has more mass appeal than niche cryptocurrencies.

However, we can see an example of a DEX overcoming all of the issues with intersecting with TradFi in SOMA.finance. It is a globally compliant multi-asset DEX and insurance platform where you can trade cryptos, NFTs, ETFs, STOs, and even tokenized equities.

Currently, SOMA.finance is one of the few owners of the SEC & FINRA approved license to offer tokenized securities on the blockchain. Upon its launch, the platform will boast up to 30 of these equities, all the while remaining completely decentralized. As a joint venture between MANTRA DAO and Tritaurian Capital, we can see SOMA.finance as one of the first true intersections of DeFi and TradFi.

Closing Words

Although DeFi and TradFi have been at each other’s throats for a long time, it seems like a time is coming when the two will intersect in an effort to elevate one another.

Although there are still challenges to overcome in accomplishing this, there have been massive efforts made. There’s no better example of this than SOMA.finance, the first SEC & FINRA-approved DEX to trade tokenized securities on a decentralized platform. If this platform, a joint venture between a DeFi and TradFi entity is successful, we might just enter a new age of finance.

Cardano Founder Says To Be More Careful After Community Judges He is “Not On Same Page As Developers” On Vasil

ProjectNEWM CTO Says Cardano Founder “Is Not On The Same Page As His DevOps” Amid Vasil Launch.

Westberg urged SPOs not to follow Hoskinson’s recent recommendation.

Cardano enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the launch of the Vasil hard fork. However, things do not seem to be going smoothly, as Stake Pool Operators (SPOs) have experienced a few glitches upgrading their nodes for Vasil deployment.

Yesterday, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson urged all Stake Pool Operators (SPO) on the network to upgrade their node to version 1.35.3 in preparation for the upcoming Vasil hard fork.

According to Hoskinson, node 1.35.3 may likely be the exact node for Vasil hard fork, and SPOs and decentralized applications need to upgrade to the new node. He said:

“Let’s try this again. If you’re an SPO, then please start the upgrade path. 1.35.3 is heavily tested, and it’s more likely than not going to be the version for the HFC,” Hoskinson tweeted.

Westberg Counters Hoskinson

The Cardano founder was countered by Andrew Westberg, the Chief Technical Officer at ProjectNEWM, who immediately urged SPOs not to heed Hoskinson’s call.

Westberg told SPOs “NOT [to] upgrade to 1.35.3 on mainnet yet.” He noted that Hoskinson is not on the same page as his test team and Developers.

Furthermore, Westberg advised SPOs to first run the newly released node on the testnet before running it on mainnet.

“Run either 1.34.1 or 1.35.3 on the prepared network. Wait until they hard fork successfully and we verify there are no issues. THEN we can upgrade to mainnet,” he added.

A Twitter user who claims to support small SPOs also commented on Westberg’s tweet.  “yea, he needs to stop this unnecessary hyping. If 1.35.3 flopped like 1.35.1, .2, he would probably look like a clown.”

However, despite asking SPOs not to follow Hoskinson’s recommendation, Westberg sarcastically expressed gratitude to Cardano founder for sharing the update.

Reacting to his comments, Hoskinson said: “Thanks for forcing the clarity. I should be more careful with tweets.”

Vasil Launch Date Still Unknown

Members of the Cardano community have been awaiting the official deployment of the Vasil upgrade. Cardano’s Input Output had initially said the hard fork would go live by June end. However, Vasil’s launch was to be launched by the end of last month, but the hard fork did not occur as scheduled. Currently, no official date has been set for Vasil’s mainnet deployment.

Over 844 Million XRP Shuffled Among Ripple, Famous Exchanges, and Unknown Wallets in 24 Hours

0

The amount of large Ripple (XRP) transactions has continued to skyrocket in recent times.

According to Whale Alert, a total of 844.05 million XRP coins, worth $315.67 million, have been shuffled among Ripple, cryptocurrency exchanges, and unknown wallets.

These large XRP movements involved popular cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, FTX, Bitstamp, Bitso, etc.

Details of the Transactions

Sharing the details of these massive XRP transfers that took place in the last 24 hours, the first transaction involved an unknown wallet and FTX. Per Whale Alert, 31,769,271 (31.7M) XRP coins worth $12.19 million were transferred from FTX to an unknown wallet.

A few hours later, the whale tracking service observed the movement of 30 million XRP ($11.29 million) sent from an unnamed crypto wallet to an address on the Bitstamp exchange.

In what is considered the largest XRP transaction that took place in the last 24 hours, a total of 295,500,011 (295.5 million) XRP moved from an unknown wallet to Binance, the world’s largest exchange. The funds were worth $110.6 million at the time of the transaction.

Interestingly, a large amount of XRP coins were shuffled between two unknown wallets. According to Whale Alert, a total of 286,122,733 XRP coins valued at around ($106.64 million) were transferred from one unknown wallet to another.

Meanwhile, Ripple was also involved in the latest round of XRP shuffling that took place in the last 24 hours. This time, Ripple transferred 50 million XRP worth $18.88 million at the time of the transaction to an unknown wallet.

Notably, XRP transfers made by Ripple are done to service On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) clients amid rising demand.

Earlier today, an unknown wallet made a transfer of 45 million XRP ($17.14 million) to an address on the Bitstamp exchange.

However, it did not take long before 55,653,202 (55.65 million) XRP coins were moved from a Bitstamp address to an unknown wallet. The funds were worth $21.2 million at the time.

In a similar development, another Ripple whale sent 50 million XRP to the Bitso exchange. According to blockchain data from Whale Alert, the funds were worth $19.05 million at the time of the transaction.

EthereumPoW Team To Freeze Over 1.4 Million Ethereum

EthereumPoW Reveals Plans That Could Freeze Over 1.4 Million ETH, Again Urges Users To Take ETHW Off Liquidity Pools.

EthereumPoW releases the initial list of contracts it plans to freeze during the hard fork.

EthereumPoW, the collective behind the hard fork of a proof-of-work (PoW) Ethereum chain, in a tweet today, reveals that it plans to freeze about 85 contracts holding a total of about 1.4 million ETH ($2.6 billion), reiterating a notice to holders to take their ETHW off liquidity pools.

“We recommend everyone withdraw their ETH from all the pools before the hard fork !!!

ETHW Core released the first batch of contracts to freeze.

In total, there are 85 contracts and around 140 million [1.4 million] ETH tokens,” the group said in its tweet.

It is worth noting that Uniswap and SushiSwap liquidity pools dominate the list released by the ETHW Core team. However, the Compound: cETH Token pool stands on top of the list with the largest single holding of 465,100 ETH. The Aave: aWETH Token V2 follows the Compound pool with 312,781 ETH.

The EthereumPoW team first hinted at its plans to freeze specific liquidity pool contracts during the hard fork in a series of tweets yesterday. It noted that following the hard fork, tokens left on liquidity pools would become easy prey to bad actors in the crypto space.

Notably, on its path to creating a PoW fork of the Ethereum chain, the ETHW Core team has achieved significant milestones, including removing the difficulty bomb. Additionally, the team notes that it would abolish Ethereum’s burning mechanism introduced with EIP-1559 in its forked chain.

The group has expressed conviction that it would be ready to launch the hard fork in time for the Ethereum Merge, which is now less than a month away. It has so far received support from about six exchanges, including Justin Sun’s Poloniex, which has launched trading for ETHW.

Vitamin Buterin has asserted that Ethereum will not be adversely affected by the planned PoW hard fork but warns users to be wary of the motives of the instigators.

Huobi Stablecoin HUSD De-pegged From The USD

Huobi’s HUSD becomes the latest stablecoin to de-peg.

It appears that the era of troubles for stablecoins is yet to be over, even as the crypto market embarks on the path to recovery after months of hard knocks from bears and select coin crashes. Now, another one seems to be crashing, and this time around, it involves a large and popular crypto exchange. It’s HUSD, a stablecoin created by the Huobi crypto exchange.

What Is HUSD

According to its profile on Messari, HUSD was launched in 2018 after the Huobi exchange noticed issues with Tether’s USDT, so the exchange decided to create its stablecoin. The ERC-20-based stablecoin was to be used as an aggregate for others like True USD (TUSD), USD Coin (USDC), Paxos Standard (PAX), and Gemini Dollars (GUSD). This way, users could deposit or withdraw any of the four coins, and they would appear on the Huobi exchange in the form of HUSD.

Things are getting thick for the HUSD as it experiences a crash, leading it to de-peg from the usual 1:1 ratio with the USD. At the time of writing, HUSD is trading at around $0.95 after falling to $0.93 marking an above 4% decrease from the normal $1 range. It’s still unclear what led to the de-peg of a stablecoin supported by one of the largest crypto exchanges. However, Bloomberg reported recently that Huobi’s founder was willing to sell his stake in exchange for $3B, which was then denied by the exchange.

Not The First To De-Peg

HUSD is not the first stablecoin to crash or experience a de-peg. Others like Terra’s UST went through the same ordeal merely a few months ago. The event culminated in the total collapse of the Terra ecosystem after Terra Luna crashed hard. Huobi exchange was among the big exchanges that supported the revival of Terra 2.0.

Typically, controlling entities deploy collateral to shore up their coin values and prevent a further crash after a de-peg. TRON’s USDC came close to a severe blow but was saved by enough collateral deployed.

KuCoin, Bitrue, Poloniex, and 13 Crypto Exchanges Accused By Government of Operating Illegally in South Korea

0

The Korean government has notified relevant agencies to investigate and block domestic access to the exchanges.

South Korean government said it had notified investigative agencies about 16 unregistered cryptocurrency exchanges that have been operating in the country without reporting their businesses to the government.

The 16 exchanges include KuCoin, MEXC, Bitrue, Phemex, XT.com, ZB.com, Bitglobal, CoinW, CoinEX, AAX, ZoomEX, Poloniex, BTCEX, BTCC, DigiFinex, and Pionex.

The FSC noted that the exchanges have been violating the Special Financial Information Act (Special Act). Local media outlet News Korea noted that under the Special Act, it is illegal for trading platforms to operate in the country without registering with relevant authorities.

Per the report, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) reached out to the crypto exchanges in July 2021, notifying them that they are mandated to register and report their businesses to the government.

However, the 16 accused exchanges ignored the warning and continued providing services to Korean residents despite not being registered.

“Unreported virtual asset operators may be exposed to risks such as leakage of personal information and hacking because the information security management system (ISMS) under the Special Act is not properly equipped, and there is a risk of being misused as a money laundering route,” an FIU official said.

Virtual asset providers are required to meet specific requirements before offering services in South Korea. One important requirement is obtaining information security management system (ISMS) certification from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

This certification also requires the virtual asset exchange to report its business at intervals to the government.

Exchanges Could Be Punished

According to Korean rules, founders of virtual asset exchanges found guilty of violating the Special Act could be punished with up to five years imprisonment.

Additionally, the guilty exchanges could be fined no more than 50 million won ($37,854) for violating the rules. Furthermore, the trading platforms found guilty will not be able to register as domestic virtual asset business for the next five years.

Notably, the rules apply to domestic and foreign cryptocurrency exchanges rendering services to Koreans.

In a bid to prevent the exchanges from operating any further, the FIU requested other concerned agencies to block access to the trading platforms’ websites.

Confidence In Large Active Holders As Bitcoin Wallets Holding Between 100 and 10K Coins Reach 15.8K

An Increase In The Number Of Bitcoin Addresses With 100 To 10,000 BTC Indicates Increased Whale Support.

The number of Bitcoin wallets holding between 100 and 10,000 coins has hit a 2-month high.

Recent reports by Santiment, an on-chain analysis, and social metrics entity, the number of Bitcoin wallets or addresses currently holding 100 to 10,000 BTC coins is the highest since June 11. That indicates a sharp increase in two months. At current market values, the addresses are holding between $2.3 million and $233 million.

According to Santiment, “Bitcoin addresses holding between 100 to 10,000 BTC ($2.3m to $233m) has reached its largest quantity since June 11th. We look to this tier of large addresses as confidence from large active holders, and this increase is encouraging.”

Santiment Further reveals that 15,824 addresses are holding 100 to 10,000 BTC highest since June 11th.

Decreased Exchange Deposits

Also, according to Glassnodes, another on-chain alerts firm, investors seem to have a reduced appetite for exchange deposits. This means that many BTC whales are not moving their stash around. Glassnode reports that the 7-day MA (moving average) for Bitcoin exchange deposits has hit a 2-year low of 2,009.256. This breaks the previous 2-year record of 2,010.179 posted on July 15, 2022.

This comes when Bitcoin’s price seems to be gaining momentum after months of bearish attacks. At the moment, the top coin is going for around $23.4k. Bitcoin’s strength is partly influenced by the ongoing adoption by various economic sectors and increasing global acceptance as a means of payment.

What Does This Mean?

Basically, an increase in the number of addresses holding a significant number of Bitcoins, coupled with a notable decrease in exchange deposits, may mean that whales are actively accumulating and moving their stash away from exchanges. In essence, this could be an indication that these whales have chosen to hodl their stash, possibly in anticipation of an oncoming crypto bull run. It’s not uncommon for bull runs to be preceded by a period of aggressive accumulation and hodling.

However, it’s not yet clear how long these holders intend to keep away from exchanges, especially considering that the global economy is still in recession while the crypto space remains resilient.

Ethereum Founder Causes A Stir On Twitter As He Reveals Grudge Against XRP, Ripple Community Responds

0

Buterin does not believe the Ethereum community should act in support or defense of XRP.

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin in a tweet today, expressed the belief that Ethereum supporters had no obligation to speak up in support or defense of XRP, recalling filings by Ripple in December 2020 in their legal battle with the SEC, where the firm named Ethereum as Chinese-controlled.

“XRP already lost their right to protection when they tried to throw us under the bus as ‘China-controlled’ imo,” Buterin tweeted.

Buterin’s statements come as new Canadian crypto regulations come to light that limits the value of crypto citizens of certain regions can purchase in a year to $30,000. Notably, this new directive excluded Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin from the above restriction but named Solana as a restricted cryptocurrency.

Responding to protests against the new rule by Trustless founder David Hoffman, Buterin commended the known Ethereum supporter for speaking out in support of what he called other legitimate cryptocurrencies even when the issue posed no risk to Ethereum. “Glad to see Ethereum people pushing against regulations that privilege ETH over other legitimate cryptocurrencies,” Buterin said.

However, Hoffman, in turn, said he would not have said anything if the restricted crypto in question was XRP, a sentiment Buterin seemed to endorse with his now controversial statement.

The XRP Community Responds

Notably, Buterin’s statement has been met with responses from several influential Ripple and XRP community members. For example, Ripple CTO David Schwartz asserted that Ethereum had formed the habit of endorsing government actions against other projects just because the projects disagreed with their narrative. Furthermore, he noted that the basis of Ripple’s argument at the time was that most Bitcoin and Ethereum miners were resident in China and, subject to Chinese policy controls, going further to compare miners to company shareholders.

On the other hand, Ripple Attorney Jeremy Hogan quoting Buterin’s tweet, compared the Ethereum founder’s statements to that of a mafia don, highlighting Buterin’s use of the word protection.

Meanwhile, Attorney John Deaton, who represents XRP holders in an amicus curiae status in Ripple’s case with the SEC, noted that Buterin’s statements are insensitive to XRP holders. According to Deaton, several XRP holders without affiliation to Ripple did not know the firm but lost their savings due to the “SEC’s overreach.”

Ripple’s Legal Battle With The SEC

Ripple has been locked in a legal battle with the US SEC since December 2020, as the SEC accuses Ripple of raising funds by selling an unregistered security, XRP.

Notably, the firm has seen significant wins in the case, with many expecting a victory for Ripple. In addition, while it has received significant support from the crypto community, there appears to be no love lost between the firm and the Ethereum community.

Indian Police Join U.S. in the Hunt For BitConnect Scam Mastermind Satish Kumbhani

0

Police in India joined US authorities in the search for the wanted mastermind of the crypto pyramid scheme, BitConnect.

Back in 2016, a supposedly very “upcoming” and “innovative” crypto platform was launched. Its name was BitConnect. After attracting a lot of attention from interested investors who wanted quick and high returns, this platform soon spelled trouble for numerous people. It made them lose billions of dollars in a well-orchestrated pyramid scheme.

The scam’s mastermind was an Indian known as Satish Kumbhani, who is now a person of much interest and wanted both in India and the United States.

The scheme worked by promising investors a whooping 10% ROI to be promptly paid out in the platform’s own token known as BCC (BitConnect). Users had to send in their investments in the form of Bitcoin (BTC).

However, just like how the rest of pyramid schemes work, a lot of people ended up losing all their money when the mastermind disappeared with the stash of Bitcoins invested by the users.

How India Got Involved

However, until recently, Indian police hadn’t joined the search for the top fraudster. That seems to have changed now. This happened after an investor complained to the police, revealing that he had lost about 220 BTC in the scheme after being convinced by Satish and his cronies to invest 54 BTC and get 166 BTC as ROI.

In September 2021, US authorities filed a case against Satish and his group of scammers and launched a manhunt for him. The mastermind went into hiding. US law enforcement has been on the hunt for him ever since. Now, it seems that their job has been made easier after their Indian counterparts joined the hunt.

As of now, US authorities have liquidated property belonging to Satish and worth $56 million to compensate victims of his scam art. Satish Kumbhani faces up to 70 years in jail if caught and convicted.

As reported by The Crypto Basic, crypto-related scams are still a thorn in the flesh of the industry. Some of them have attempted to involve some popular cryptos known in the market.
