TerraForm Labs Under New Investigation About “Suspicious” Crypto Wallet Used For Embezzling Its Bitcoin Reserves

0

Investigation into Terra’s activities is still not over as fresh allegations emerge.

Since the collapse of Terra tokens UST and LUNA, the firm behind the crypto project TerraForm Labs (TFL), has been under widespread scrutiny from its community, with many alleging that the company is the major reason that caused the plunge of the cryptocurrencies.

While TFL is still trying to make investors whole following their losses last month, a fresh allegation has been leveled at the company by unknown investors.

Terra Faces Embezzlement Allegations

According to a Bloomberg report today, South Korean police have launched a new investigation into a recent allegation that employees of TFL embezzled the company’s Bitcoin (BTC) reserve.

Bloomberg noted that an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said by phone that Korean law enforcement agents are investigating the wallet alleged to have been used to embezzle investors’ funds.

While the official did not disclose the owner of the cryptocurrency wallet, Korean media outlet Yonhap reported that the wallet belongs to Terra’s Luna Guard Foundation (LFG), the organization established to maintain UST’s peg against the dollar.

According to Bloomberg:

“The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is investigating a report about a “suspicious” crypto wallet that may have been used to embezzle Bitcoin, an official said by phone on Thursday. It wasn’t clear whether the wallet belonged to one or several employees, and the amount of Bitcoin possibly stolen isn’t yet known, the official said.”

It is noteworthy that during the course of sustaining UST dollar peg, LFG had amassed a total of $3.5 billion worth of Bitcoin.

However, at the time when UST lost its peg due to the massive interest rate of 20% paid out to investors of its Anchor program, Terra noted that it used its Bitcoin reserve to save UST from crashing further but failed, a move that was criticized by Binance Changpeng “CZ” Zhao.

Terra’s Lack of Transparency With the Community

Meanwhile, Terra has been largely criticized for its lack of transparency. Many investors believe the firm is not being entirely honest with them.

It is no longer new that Terra crashed due to the massive ROI paid to investors in its Anchor program. According to one of Terra’s core designers, Do Kwon, the CEO of Terra, despite being told that the Terra project will crash if the Anchor interest rate is set at more than 3.6%, still proceeded to launch the project at a whopping 20% ROI in a bid to lure more investors.

Similarly, fresh reports also emerged about how the TFL lied about not owning any of the new LUNA 2.0 tokens. However, investigations reveal that the company hid 42 million LUNA 2.0 tokens in multiple hidden wallets.

John Deaton Says Hinman’s Docs Will Never See Light Of Day, SEC May Settle With Ripple Rather Surrendering Documents

Hinman’s Document Will Never See Light Of Day, SEC finds it better to settle with ripple rather surrendering documents.

With expectations high that the SEC will be forced to surrender Hinman’s document, attorney Deaton said the agency would rather opt for a settlement rather than make the document public.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding former Director of the SEC’s Corporation of Finance William Hinman’s 2018 documents, which resulted in the speech that declared Ethereum (ETH) as a non-security.

Ripple is convinced that the speech would put to rest the argument that its digital currency XRP is a security. However, all efforts to obtain Hinman’s document have not yielded positive results as the SEC is not planning to surrender the file to Ripple.

Attorney Deaton Predicts Possible Outcome

Attorney John Deaton, the lawyer seeking to represent 67,000 XRP investors in the upcoming expert challenge, has given his opinion about the expected outcome of the fight over the possession of Hinman’s document.

Following the proceedings of this week’s conference between the parties, attorney Deaton noted that it is evident that Judge Sarah Netburn will order the SEC to surrender Hinman’s document.

Interestingly, the SEC’s determination to continue holding on to the document may give Ripple and XRP holders the breakthrough they need, which is an end to the more than one year lawsuit, attorney Deaton added.

Speaking in a live video, attorney Deaton said if the SEC is compelled to produce the document by Judge Sarah Netburn, the agency will immediately call for a settlement rather than to surrender Hinman’s document to Ripple.

“Those emails, those comments are never gonna see the light of day outside of SEC office. If SEC is forced to turn over those documents that’s when s settlement can happen.”

However, if things do not go the way the Ripple community is expecting and Judge Netburn does not order the SEC to produce the document, the lawsuit will head straight to summary judgment.

Argument Over Hinman’s Document

Recall that Ripple had previously brought the matter to court, which ended in the blockchain company’s favor as the SEC was ordered on two occasions to surrender the documents.

The SEC has not relented in its quest to protect Hinman’s document from being used as evidence in the lawsuit, as it continues to take significant steps toward protecting the document.

SEC’s Effort to Protect Hinman’s Document

The Security and Exchange Commission’s recent effort to protect the document comes on the basis of attorney-client privilege.

According to the SEC, Hinman sought legal advice before he gave the 2018 speech that ultimately ruled that Ethereum is not a security.

Both parties have argued this recent assertion, prompting Judge Sarah Netburn to invite Ripple and the SEC to a conference earlier this week to discuss Hinman’s document issues.

Interestingly, from the tone of the conversation, it is obvious that the SEC is only interested in protecting the document in order to avoid any slander of its reputation.

While Judge Netburn did not have any rulings at the conference held on June 7, 2022, it is expected that following the proceedings of the conference, the SEC may be compelled to surrender the document.

Terra Legal battlefront in The US: Do Kwon And Terraform Labs Ordered To Heed SEC Subpoenas

A US Court has ordered Terra’s Do Kwon and Terraform Labs to comply with subpoenas issued by SEC.

Terra’s founder, Do Kwon, and his company, Terraform Labs, are still in legal muddy waters. Besides being investigated in South Korea, Do Kwon and TFL are now faced with another legal battlefront in the United States.

According to a recent ruling by the US Second Circuit, which is the US Federal Court of Appeal, the two entities associated with Terra are to comply with SEC subpoenas issued earlier.

SEC Was Within The Law To Serve Subpoena

The SEC issued the subpoena to Do Kwon while he was in the US attending a crypto conference in New York City back in September 2021. However, Do Kwon didn’t show up to iron out things with the SEC. The SEC wanted Do Kwon and TFL to appear before it and prove that Terra’s crypto tokens are not securities registered illegally.

A lower court issued the same order, but Kwon and TFL appealed the ruling. Now that the higher court has affirmed the decision, it will be up to Kwon and his company to decide on whether to appear before the SEC or keep running.

Back in South Korea, lawmakers have called for Kwon to appear before them and explain what led to the collapse of Terra LUNA and UST which saw over 200,000 South Koreans lose their money.

Kwon Says SEC Has No Jurisdiction

While the courts in the US say otherwise, Do Kwon says that the SEC doesn’t have any jurisdiction to investigate him and his company.

However, it’s notable that Terra’s tokens are traded all over the world, especially on exchanges – most of which have huge customer bases in the US. These include Binance.US and Coinbase.

Under US federal law, the SEC has the mandate to keep all businesses and trades happening within the US borders clean. Cryptocurrencies fit in this category. A case in point can be seen where SEC is currently involved in a legal tussle with Ripple over XRP’s status.

Cardano Founder Charles Hoskinson Says Ethereum 2.0 Will Launch No Earlier Than 2023, More Likely 2024

Cardano’s boss has also given his predictions about the launch date of the much-anticipated Ethereum 2.0.

There has been a lot of debate over when the Ethereum 2.0 will launch, as many people continue to give different dates on when the upgraded ETH blockchain will go live.

Several cryptocurrency experts, including the team behind the project, have made predictions as to when the entire crypto space should expect the rollout of Ethereum 2.0.

Hoskinson Makes His ETH 2.0 Launch Date Prediction

The latest digital currency expert to speak on the timeframe the cryptocurrency community should expect the launch of Ethereum 2.0 is Charles Hoskinson, the CEO of Input Output Global (IOG), the company behind the development and research of Cardano.

Hoskinson, who was also a co-founder of Ethereum, noted in a recent Fireside interview that the upgraded version of Ethereum will launch no earlier than 2023.

This is in contrast to reports that circulated online a few weeks ago when many speculated that Ethereum 2.0 would go live by August this year.

According to Hoskinson, Ethereum 2.0 will possibly launch in 2023, adding that the date could be pushed to 2024 depending on the progress made by developers.

The Cardano exec continued that Ethereum 1.5 has already gone live, which he referred to as Polkadot, a Layer-2 scaling solution on the Ethereum network.

Ethereum 2.0 Upgrade

It is worth noting that Ethereum 2.0 is an ongoing upgrade expected to transition the popular blockchain network from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) algorithm to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus.

In a bid to make this possible, the upcoming Ethereum 2.0 has been broken down into three elements, the Beacon chain, the Merge, as well as the shard chains.

All chains are being worked on in parallel and their completion will determine when Ethereum 2.0 will be officially launched.

The development of Ethereum 2.0 comes following widespread complaints about the large energy consumption of the existing PoW mechanism, resulting in increased gas fees.

According to the Ethereum team, once ETH 2.0 launches, the network would become more scalable, sustainable, and secure, thus prompting enthusiasts of the project to be eager for the launch.

ETH Ropsten Testnet

While the Beacon chain launched last year, enthusiasts of the project are expecting the second phase of the upgrade – the merge to go live in earnest.

At the moment, the development team is working round the clock to ensure the Merge phase launches without any issue and has been working towards achieving that goal in recent times.

The first rehearsal for the Merge was completed recently on the Ropsten test network.  The test network successfully executed the merge between the existing PoW chain and the Beacon PoS chains – a move similar to the process that the ETH 2.0 will undergo on the main chain in the coming months.

Hoskinson Still Focused on Vasil Hard Fork

Meanwhile, despite Hoskinson commenting on one of his projects, the IOG CEO is still focused on the development of his flagship crypto project, Cardano.

The Cardano team is working relentlessly to ensure that the Vasil Hard Fork is launched without any issues later this month. As disclosed by Hoskinson, the Vasil Hard Fork Event has reached its final stages and will be implemented at the appropriate time come June 29.

Hacker Who Seized 20 Million Optimism Tokens Sent 1 Million OP To Ethereum’s Founder Vitalik Buterin

Ethereum creator has received 1 million OP from an anonymous hacker who seized 20 million coins from Wintermute.

Layer-2 scaling solutions are great because they’re fast, but they can be risky sometimes. Such is the case where 20 million Optimism tokens were sent from the Optimism Foundation to Wintermute, a market maker, and liquidity provider. The tokens were sent from a Layer-2 address to a Layer-1 address.

Apparently, Wintermute failed to synch the two addresses that were clearly on different layers. As such, the 20 million OP tokens were left floating on the chain – not reaching the intended address, and not refunded to the source address.

Hacker Seized All Of The “Floating Coins”

Wintermute assured Optimism that the coins were safe and could be retrieved while the coins were floating. That didn’t turn out to be true because the coins were soon seized by an outsider – a hacker who found a way to redirect the coins to his/her address.

Vitalik Buterin Gets 1 Million OP

Interestingly, the hacker didn’t use the coins to manipulate the governance system on Optimism. Instead, he sent 1 million OP coins to Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin. At the time, the 20 million coins were worth roughly $35 million. The transfer was reported in a tweet by PeckShieldAlert.

1M op tokens sent to eth founder

When Optimism and Wintermute went public with the news, OP price dipped by over 30%. At the time of this writing, OP is trading at $0.84 and registering a 24-hour drop of 15%. At the moment, with the current price, the coins are worth less than $20 million.

Hacker Offered A Job At Wintermute

Meanwhile, Wintermute has taken full responsibility for the loss and has made attempt to contact the hacker. The company has even hinted at a possible job offer to the hacker. However, the hacker has remained silent after sending the 1 million OP to Vitalik.

Interestingly, Wintermute hasn’t been all cozy to the hacker, though it has been somewhat kind to Optimism. While the company is looking to negotiate with the hacker to get them to refund the tokens, its approach seems a bit abrasive.

Its statement read,

“You have one week to consider being a whitehat. In case the above doesn’t happen, we are 100% committed to returning all the funds, tracking the person(s) responsible for the exploit, fully doxxing them, and delivering them to the corresponding juridical system. Remember that robbers need to get lucky every time. Cops only have to get lucky once. This is not a “code is law” theoretical argument.

This is you taking a bag with cash that was left behind by a (careless) person. Us being careless still leaves you a criminal. We already started investigating the potential leads, in certain cases stopping short of informing respective law enforcement agencies. Consider your options and choose to be good and optimistic instead of living in fear.”

For The First Time, Bitcoin Accumulating Addresses Crossed Up Price On Charts Suggesting Good Times May Come Soon

Bitcoin Accumulating Addresses Surges Above 600K, Suggesting an Imminent Price Increase.

Bitcoin investors keep accumulating the world’s top cryptocurrency following its low prices.

With the price of Bitcoin down over 50% from its all-time high (ATH) in November 2021, investors have embarked on an accumulation spree of the top asset class in preparation for an imminent bull run.

According to data from Glassnode, the number of addresses accumulating the world’s largest cryptocurrency has soared above 600,000 for the first time ever.

The development suggests that Bitcoin investors are taking advantage of the massive price dip recorded in the past week to increase their holding in the cryptocurrency.

The massive accumulation of BTC shows that the number of long-term Bitcoin holders is on the increase, which will help lay the groundwork for cryptocurrency assets to surge. Also, for the first time number of addresses holding bitcoin has surpassed the BTC price on the chart.

It is worth noting that the development was shared by a Bitcoin enthusiast on Twitter, who goes by the username @Blerk52.

“Never before in the history of bitcoin has the number of accumulating addresses crossed up past the price on a chart. Ladies and gentlemen, over the past few days this has happened. This may be the start of the biggest bull run bitcoin has ever seen.”

BTC accumulating addresses crossed price

Most Bitcoin Holders Are In for the Long-Term

Unlike most cryptocurrencies, the vast majority of Bitcoin investors are long-term investors, who have continued to show faith in the asset class, regardless of the market situation.

According to data on the crypto analytic data platform TheBlockCrypto, at least 61% of Bitcoin investors have held the asset class for more than a year, while 33% have held BTC between 1 and 12 months.

Similarly, only a few Bitcoin addresses, representing 6% of holders, have been holding Bitcoin for less than a month. Bitcoin has received interest from most top multinational firms that have continued to declare their commitment to the top asset class.

Some of Bitcoin’s institutional and corporate investors include MicroStrategy, Block Inc., etc.

BTC’s Underperformance This Year

Bitcoin investors are left with no option but to endure a terrible start to the year. BTC, which started the year around $47,000, is down 34.2% as it is changing hands around $30,500 at the time of writing.

Several factors contributed to the bearish state of Bitcoin, including Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the Terra tokens crash, as well as the Federal Reserve’s move to increase interest rates in a bid to mitigate surging inflation.

Robinhood CEO Showcases Dogecoin as His Best Friend On U.S. National Best Friends Day

0

The CEO of Robinhood continues to throw his weight behind Dogecoin again.

Vladimir Tenev, the CEO and co-founder of popular trading firm Robinhood Markets, has a best friend in the world: the largest meme coin, Dogecoin (DOGE).

In the spirit of celebrating U.S. National Best Friends Day, Tenev took to Twitter to share a smiling picture of himself featuring the Dogecoin mascot close to his shoulder as he tweeted:

“Things are never quite as scary when you’ve got a best friend.”

Memecoin Supporters Link the Mascot to their Favorite Project

Meanwhile, the tweet has prompted questions from cryptocurrency community members, especially meme coin enthusiasts, who are inquisitive to know which memecoin’s mascots are featured in the picture.

“What kind of dog is that on the right?,” a Twitter user who goes by the username @gfcrypto8080 tweeted.

Some of the people who commented on the post suggested that the mascot belongs to the second-largest meme coin Shiba Inu (SHIB) citing Robinhood’s recent listing of the Shib earlier this year but the matter of fact is that Robinhood CEO is only referring to dogecoin as he is a big fan of the meme coin like Elon Musk.

Tenev Is a Fan of Dogecoin

However, others noted that it is Dogecoin based on the fact that Tenev has always been in support of Dogecoinand has proposed ways to aid in the widespread adoption of the asset class.

In April, Tenev proposed tips that would help Dogecoin become the currency of the internet, thus prompting reactions from other DOGE proponents like Tesla founder Elon Musk and DOGE co-creator Billy Marcus.

Edge Launches No-KYC Mastercard to Allow Users to Spend BTC, ETH, BCH, Doge Across 10M U.S. Merchants

Several initiatives continue to be rolled out in support of cryptocurrency payments.

Edge, a self-custody crypto exchange, has rolled out a new service that will enable its users to spend their digital currencies.

Following the initiative, the cryptocurrency startup has launched its credit card solution dubbed Edge Mastercard in a bid to allow its users to spend cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Dogecoin (DOGE).

Other digital currencies that can be spent via Edge Mastercard include Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), and Dash (DASH). Users will be allowed to spend $1,000 daily.

The initiative is designed in a way that allows users to transfer supported cryptocurrency assets to the Edge app, which can be used to purchase goods across supported stores, the announcement adds.

Getting Started with Edge Mastercard

Getting started with the service is as easy as it can get, as users can start spending their cryptocurrencies to purchase items from different merchants.

Interested users are required to enter their email addresses on the Edge app in order to sign up for the card. Once the Edge Mastercard arrives at its destination, it will be required to set it up from the app for security purposes.

Unlike most cryptocurrency payment providers, Edge does not require users to provide their personal information before using the service.

“Using Edge Mastercard does not require you to compromise your privacy, as other programs do. There is no name or address associated with your Edge Mastercard, making for completely private transactions when your card is used,” the San Diego-based cryptocurrency payment company noted on its website.

Paul Puey, the co-founder of Edge, expressed excitement about the newly launched service, stating that the company’s users will be able to spend their crypto assets at various merchants without having to compromise their identities.

10 Million Merchants to Support the Service

Edge plans to roll out the service across 10 million U.S.-based merchants. Despite the fact that users will be spending their crypto across these merchants, the initiative is designed to enable merchants to receive U.S. dollars.

“Bitcoin, BitcoinCash, Dash, Doge, and Litecoin users will finally be able to spend their currencies at Mastercard accepting merchants in the US,” Puey added.

With Edge Mastercard, users do not have to go through any know-your-customer (KYC) verification exercise, as they can begin making purchases across the supported 10 million stores in the U.S. once they receive the card.

Despite the fact that users will not be required to go through complex KYC procedures, Edge noted that the newly launched Mastercard is compliant with various financial regulations, including Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorism Financing.

On a daily basis, users will get to spend a maximum of $1,000, making it $30,000 for a month.

Widespread Adoption of Crypto Payments

The development marks the continuous adoption of cryptocurrencies, as payment methods in exchange for various merchandise.

As reported, over 25 shopping malls and 13 hotels have integrated support for crypto payments using Binance Pay.

CNBC’s Jim Crammer Says Own Crypto – Because Of “All The Fortunes That Have Been Made In It”

CNBC’s Jim Crammer Says Though Speculative But You Should Own Crypto.

The crypto industry has been growing for years, even reaching a point where financial institutions and governments that were previously against them are now getting into it. The market keeps attracting more users and money flows into it.

Jim Crammer found himself dealing with Ethereum when he needed to purchase an NFT.

He says,

“They wouldn’t let me do dollars. I had to buy it in Ethereum, so I researched it, and it’s got some qualities I like.”

Jim Crammer (or James Joseph Crammer) is an author and TV personality working with CNBC. On CNBC, Jim hosts a segment called “Mad Money.” He’s also a presenter on Squawk on the Street. Before getting into media, Jim was a hedge fund manager at Crammer Berkowitz. He was one of the founders as well as a senior partner in the firm.

There’s A Caveat

According to Jim, cryptos like Bitcoin and Ethereum are great as speculative assets, and people should remember that.

“I can’t tell you not to own crypto; I own Ethereum,”

Cryptos have potential and people have earned astronomical profits from them. For example, a decade ago, Bitcoin was worth pennies. Today, it’s worth around $30k a piece. Cryptos have made billionaires like Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss who invested early in BTC.

However, Jim provides a caveat. As mentioned, cryptos are largely speculative assets and people should only invest what they can afford to lose. Still, Jim doesn’t look at them as a gamble. They’re not gamblers. They’re simply investments that are actually part of one’s portfolio.

Crammer’s Recommendations For Crypto Portfolio

Jim Crammer has a few recommendations to share with crypto investors. First, a crypto portfolio shouldn’t take up too much of one’s investments.

A 5% in crypto and a 5% in Gold is fine. He also recommends investing in the two top coins – Bitcoin and Ethereum.  They’re the two largest coins in the market and have a large following, making them comparatively more secure.

While Crammer advocates for buying cryptos, he advises against borrowing money to buy them.

“Borrow for your house, borrow for your car — but don’t borrow for crypto.”

He says Cryptocurrencies are different and not safe long-term investments.

“Don’t put it in the Procter & Gamble class. It’s not Coca-Cola, it’s not Apple,”

He also thinks crypto investments should not be put in the same basket as other types of long-term investments like stocks.

Cramer says he would never discourage someone from investing because of “all the fortunes that have been made in it.”

At the time of this writing, BTC is trading at around $30K while ETH is going for $1,794 a piece.
