Ripple General Counsel Says SEC Responsible For BlockFi Insolvency

0

Alderoty believes that the SEC settlement deal with BlockFi backed the crypto lender into a corner, putting customers at risk.

Ripple General Counsel Stuart Alderoty laid the potential collapse of BlockFi at the feet of the US Securities and Exchange Commission in a couple of tweets on Sunday to establish a trend of the regulator hurting consumers.

According to Alderoty, it is not clear that the SEC carried out its due diligence to ensure that the crypto lender could pay the $100 million fine it was slapped with as part of a settlement deal in February, nor did it confirm the source of this funding. The Ripple GC speculates that BlockFi’s settlement with the SEC forced it to get in bed with FTX, citing the $250 million loan BlockFi received from FTX in June, as seen in FTX’s bankruptcy filings.

The filings show that FTX made the loan in FTT, its highly illiquid exchange token.

With FTX in bankruptcy proceedings, BlockFi customers risk losing their funds as the lender has paused operations.

Notably, Ripple CTO David Schwartz surmising Alderoty’s thoughts, also stoked the flames of rumors that in exchange for the line of credit, BlockFi kept customer funds on FTX.

“… BlockF [BlockFi] borrowing funds from FTX for fines may be connected to BlockFi assets being stored at FTX,” Schwartz tweeted. “In other words, the SEC may have made BlockFi so weak financially that it had no choice but to store crypto at FTX to continue operating, possibly the cause of their collapse.”

It bears mentioning that BlockFi denied these claims in response to Frequently Asked Questions 4 days ago. However, it concedes that it has significant exposure to the bankrupt crypto exchange.

“The rumors that a majority of BlockFi assets are custodied at FTX are false,” the crypto lender wrote. “However, as shared, we have significant exposure to FTX and associated corporate entities that encompasses obligations owed to us by Alameda, assets held at FTX.com, and undrawn amounts from our credit line with FTX.US.”

Contextual Information

Notably, the crypto lender had entered a $100 million settlement with the SEC in February over its interest-yielding product. It is unclear when BlockFi made the payment, but reports and SEC statements indicate that BlockFi has indeed made the payment.

In June, the firm received a $250 million line of credit from FTX, saying it had to liquidate a large client, many speculate to be Three Arrows Capital, in the wake of the Terra collapse. Additionally, in July, it received an additional $400 million line of credit from FTX.US, citing market volatility in the wake of the Celsius and 3AC collapse, with an option for the exchange to buy out the lender at $240 million, depending on operational conditions.

Consequently, it is not clear that the SEC fine was the catalyst for the crypto lender’s current predicament that might see it eventually file for bankruptcy protection.

All of these come as the crypto community, especially the XRP community, who know more than most what it is like to be at the receiving end of SEC enforcement, poke holes at the SEC’s operations. As previously reported, Alderoty had asserted that SEC chief Gary Gensler should also face investigations for the FTX collapse. He asserted that the SEC’s modus operandi under Gensler has been to coerce crypto firms into backroom deals.

As previously reported by The Crypto Basic, the crypto community, in the wake of the FTX collapse, has drawn the attention of Congress to links between FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and Gensler.

Over 223.26 Million Shiba Inu (SHIB) burned in the past week, and 22.02 Million in the past 24 hours.

Three well-known Community-led burn initiatives, “Shibburn.com,” “SHIB Super Store,” and “1Cent,” make it to the list of “Top SHIB Burners of the Week.”

Weekly Burns

Shibburn.com recently reported that Shiba Inu Community had sent a total of 223,264,370 (223.26M) SHIB to the “inferno” addresses through 51 separate transactions in the past week.

“Shibburn.com,” “SHIB Super Store,” and “1Cent,” collectively removed a whopping 166,000,354 (166M) SHIB from circulation forever in three separate transactions.

Shibburn.com

Shibburn.com recorded the biggest SHIB Burn of the week. On November 22nd, Shibburn.com executed one significant transaction to take out 127,821,443 (127.82M) SHIB from circulation forever.

It should be noted that Shibburn.com has built three revenue streams i.e., Shibburn.com, Shibburn Radio, and Super Followers, of which it has dedicated about 40% of its entire revenue to Shiba Inu Burns.

SHIB Super Store

SHIB Super Store recorded the second biggest burn of the week. On November 21st, SHIB Super Store reported via tweet that it had put the match to a total of 26,772,703 (26.77M) SHIB via one momentous transaction using SHIB Burn Portal.

1Cent Token

1Cent Token managed to take the third spot in the list of “Top SHIB Burners of the Week” as the SHIB Burn Project incinerated a total of 11,406,208 (11.40M) SHIB in one noteworthy transaction via the Weekly SHIB Burn Event organized on November 21st, 2022.

Past 24 Hours Burn

Apart from Weekly Burn, the Shiba Inu Community transferred 22.02 Million SHIB to the “Null Address” through 11 separate transactions in the past 24 hours, Shibburn.com reports.

Bitcoin Holders With Less Than 1 Bitcoin Add 96K BTC Since FTX Collapse

Glassnode Data Shows That FTX Collapse Left Bitcoin Holders Unfazed.

Bitcoin holders did not panic in the wake of the FTX collapse as smaller holders accumulated.

Bitcoin shrimps (holders with less than 1 BTC) and Bitcoin crabs (holders with up to 10 BTC) have been accumulating despite the FTX collapse, with only mild selling from whales, per data from Glassnode in a Twitter thread today.

Instead of panicking, Bitcoin shrimps added 92.6k BTC to their bags in the wake of the FTX collapse. According to Glassnode, it represents an all-time high balance increase and brings their holdings to over 1.21 million BTC, over 6.3% of the circulating supply.

Bitcoin crabs also set what the analytics firm described as a “convincing all-time high” in accumulations. Per the data, they added 191.6k BTC to their holdings, surpassing a previous record of 126k BTC in July.

Glassnode notes that the primary class of holders selling are the whales (holding over 1k BTC). However, it highlights that they have sold only about 6.5k BTC, a very small percentage of their 6.3 million BTC holdings.

Meanwhile, Santiment Feed, in a tweet on Saturday, also confirms this trend. Notably, the analytics firm revealed that only 6.95% of BTC sits on exchanges, highlighting an accelerated shift toward self-custody.

All of these are indicators of less selling pressure in the market.

It bears mentioning that the FTX collapse saw Bitcoin form a new two-year low below the $16k price point, with looming fears of contagion risks. Recently, fears of a possible collapse of Digital Currency Group and its crypto lending arm Genesis Trading have left investors on edge. Notably, several investors are worried about the impact on the DCG-operated Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, which holds over 633.7k BTC.

Price Outlook

Bitcoin analyst Ali Martinez on Saturday cautioned investors to brace for market volatility as he highlighted a Bollinger Bands squeeze on the 4-hour timeframe. “BTC needs to close outside of the $16,400 – $16,700 price pocket to signal the direction of its trend,” Martinez added.

While on-chain data indicates reduced selling pressure and the Bollinger Bands indicate volatility, analysts like il Capo of Crypto and Profit Blue remain pessimistic. Both have asserted that a bearish continuation remains more likely in recent tweets.

Notably, veteran trader Peter Brandt recently indicated that the price of Bitcoin could drop as low as $10k in this bear cycle.

CoinMarketCap data shows that Bitcoin is currently exchanging hands for $16,200. It is down 2.26% in the last 24 hours.

Shariah-Compliant Blockchains: The Muslim Community’s Entry To Decentralized Finance

0

Considering the nearly 2 billion followers of Islam and the rapid growth of the international Muslim community over the last few years, it is safe to say that the Islamic financial sector is on the rise.

With Islamic banking’s 6% share in the global banking market, researchers expect Islamic finance’s total asset value to surge from 2019’s $2.88 trillion to $3.69 trillion by 2024.

Such a growth rate provides an excellent opportunity for market players to innovate and leverage via an emerging technology like the blockchain to build inclusive financial products that follow Islam’s values and ethics.

What Should I Know About Islamic Finance?

Sharia law is a religious regulatory system based on Islamic ethics and values. Most importantly, it governs every aspect of Muslims’ economic, communal, and social activities.

Regarding economic activities, the Sharia law makes it illegal to pay or charge interest (riba) due to deeming it unethical and usurious practice. For that reason, alternative financing structures are used in Islamic finance, such as the markup-focused Murabaha and the partnership-based Mudarabah.

Furthermore, the Islamic world’s laws also seek to maintain complete transparency, encourage fairness, and share risks equally between fund managers and investors.

It is also important to mention that while conventional investments generate profits for a smaller group of stakeholders, Islamic finance projects aim to create value for the whole Muslim community.

On the one hand, Sharia law seeks to create a more equal, fairer, and ethical financial world. However, the end result is a rather restricted framework.

The Muslim Community’s Entry Into the Decentralized Financial World

From fairness, transparency, and community-centered business models, decentralized finance (DeFi) and Islamic finance share important values and principles. And with a Shariah-compliant blockchain network, the international Muslim community can finally join and benefit from this new digital economy.

However, crypto projects have to consider a few core aspects when building blockchains that align with the rules of Islam.

First, gold and silver are mentioned in the Qur’an as two preferred currencies. So Shariah-compliant cryptocurrency would feature a deflationary mechanism similar to Bitcoin’s halving and a limited supply hardcoded on the protocol level. As no one can arbitrarily generate more tokens above this cap, the asset would feature similar safeguards against currency devaluation as gold or silver.

Furthermore, as blockchain networks are public and accessible for everyone to audit, investors can utilize the distributed ledger to monitor their investments and ensure that they only put money into Halal financial instruments.

Also, to comply with Sharia law regarding riba, compliant blockchains should use alternative financing methods instead of charging interest rates or commissions on user transactions and asset holdings.

Moreover, blockchain technology makes it very easy to donate. By leveraging smart contracts, developers can allocate a part of the native tokens a project has minted to fund non-profit decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) with charitable activities.

As the native cryptocurrency of the Haqq community-governed blockchain network and ethics-first Shariah-compliant financial ecosystem, Islamic Coin serves as an excellent case study here. With each digital asset issuance, 10% is deposited to the special Evergreen DAO. This fund invests in Islam-related projects and initiatives and supports Muslim charity donations.

Projects like Islamic Coin demonstrate that blockchain technology can be leveraged to create new digital financing opportunities for the Muslim community while adhering to Sharia law’s rules, values, and principles.

Interestingly, leading global authorities in Islamic finance issued a Fatwa with no objections to the core concepts outlined in Islamic Coin’s whitepaper.

Shariah-Compliant Blockchains: The Best of Both Worlds

A Shariah-compliant blockchain can provide access for the Muslim community to new opportunities and benefits while following all the rules of the Islamic finance world.

At the same time, Islam’s core principles of fairness, transparency, and risk-sharing could help create a more stable and sustainable decentralized finance market, along with a much-need boost in blockchain technology’s adoption.

XRP Massive Developments In November: Review

0

November has been an exciting month for the XRP community, with several interesting developments and new use cases for the altcoin and its blockchain.

XRP is one of the leading crypto assets by market cap and has been in the top 10 for nearly a decade despite regulatory uncertainty in the US, as highlighted by Attorney John Deaton in a recent report.

The 7th largest crypto by market cap has had an exciting November with several developments. Notably, it started the month on a high as the XLS-20 amendment went live just at the end of October, ushering XRP holders into November with native NFT functionality. One week after, over 240k NFTs and 9000 collections launched on the XRP Ledger.

At the same time, leading stablecoin issuer STASIS disclosed that it had successfully integrated its popular euro (EUR) stablecoin EURS on the XRP Ledger. Recall that the platform had declared plans to do so in February, per a report by The Crypto Basic. Consequently, XRPL users can now access the largest euro stablecoin in crypto.

Meanwhile, early in the month, Propr Home, a Portuguese-based blockchain real estate marketplace, announced its plan to utilize the XRPL. Specifically, the marketplace revealed plans to utilize NFTs on the XRPL to tokenize properties for more efficient distribution.

As the month progressed, new milestones of Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service, which utilizes the XRPL and XRP to facilitate near-instant settlements and remittances, came to the fore. Notably, Ripple announced a partnership with MFS Africa, bringing the ODL service to its sixth continent. The partnership promises to enable swift cross-border payments on the continent using XRP as a bridge currency.

On the same day, Ripple revealed that the ODL was now serving nearly 40 payout markets, representing 90% of the forex market. In addition, the company has added machine learning capabilities to scale the service as it continues to expand.

Soon after, XRPL developers revealed plans to work on a XUMM wallet on/off ramp supporting 13 stablecoins in a partnership with Gatehub. While Wietse Wind asserts that the feature might take a while to roll out, he assured users that they could convert their XRP to fiat using the feature. It represents a significant step that could eliminate the heavy reliance on centralized crypto platforms.

Days later, The Crypto Basic reported that Bank of America was interested in utilizing Ripple’s ODL service, according to statements from Ripple chief Brad Garlinghouse. Garlinghouse’s statements implied that the investment bank is looking to onboard the service at the end of the US Securities and Exchange vs. Ripple lawsuit. Notably, attorney James K. Filan sees the case concluding on or before the end of March.

Now, Ripple has disclosed that it is working to develop a digital currency strategy with the Republic of Palau. The government plans to explore the development of a national digital currency with use cases on the XRPL.

Unsurprisingly, all of these developments have impacted the price of XRP. It is trading at the $0.409415 price point today, up 5.1% in the last two weeks per CoinGecko data.

Vitalik Appreciate Coinbase For Helping With Ethereum EIP-4844

Buterin reveals Coinbase has helped with Ethereum’s EIP-4844 in response to claims that CEOs of centralized exchanges do not care about crypto.

Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin revealed in a tweet on Thursday that Coinbase has assisted with EIP-4844.

For context, EIP-4844 is Ethereum’s proto-danksharding proposal. Its implementation will usher in a phase of improved Ethereum scalability by splitting the processing of transactions. EIP-4844 is currently under consideration to ship with the Shanghai upgrade, per a report from The Crypto Basic yesterday.

Buterin’s statements on Thursday came in response to Dialectic co-founder Dean Eigenmann asserting that CEOs of centralized exchanges do not care about decentralization. Notably, Eigenmann had laughed off comments from VivekVentures.eth asserting that Coinbase Chief Brian Armstrong cares. The discussion elicited a response from Buterin, who disclosed that Coinbase has been helpful.

“@coinbase has actually been increasingly helpful on EIP-4844 lately,” Buterin tweeted. “Appreciate their help on this!”

Armstrong responded, noting that the Ethereum developers did all the heavy lifting, asserting that the exchange helped where they could. “Least we can do (for all chains) given our whole business is built on these decentralized protocols,” the Coinbase chief tweeted.

It bears mentioning that in a recent Coinbase podcast, Armstrong spoke against crypto tribalism, asserting that he wants the crypto industry to collaborate more. While his comments may have received strong criticism from the XRP community, highlighting that Armstrong appeared to favor Ethereum, it is worth noting that the Coinbase chief is building a reputation for himself as a champion of the industry.

Notably, Coinbase is funding the lawsuit by Tornado Cash users against the US Treasury.

Eigenmann’s sentiments come as the crypto industry is still reeling from the collapse of FTX. Notably, recent revelations in the wake of the collapse reveal unethical and anti-crypto practices from FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried and his executives. Furthermore, in an interview with Vox, the crypto founder discloses that he never really believed in many of the things he verbally advocated for, saying it was all to build his reputation.

CoinMarketCap Now Updating Terra Classic USD Supply Every 2 Hours

0

CoinMarketCap has begun updating the current supply of TerraClassicUSD (USTC) every 2 hours.

Cryptocurrency price-tracking platform CoinMarketCap (CMC) has started updating its data on the TerraClassicUSD (USTC) circulating supply every two hours to reflect current data, as the community remains committed to its campaign to reduce the asset’s supply by burning daily.

The independent community-driven group Terra Rebels first highlighted the development in the early hours of Friday. “In addition to LUNC supply updates on CoinMarketCap and coingecko, USTC is now updating as well,” the Terra Rebels official Twitter handle disclosed in a tweet.

Terra Classic (LUNC) validator and prominent Terra influencer Classy further shared the development, disclosing more insight on the situation, including that the supply updates from CMC appear to be coming in every 2 hours.

“$USTC is now having its supply updated on @CoinMarketCap every 2 hours,” Classy revealed ten minutes after the disclosure from the official Terra Rebels handle. Classy further shared a screenshot detailing the updated supply at the time.

Image

Data from Classy’s screenshot revealed a circulating supply of 9.81B USTC. Recent data shows that the current circulating supply is 9,805,941,162 USTC as of press time. Additionally, the total supply is currently 9,806,470,248. Data from CoinGecko also puts USTC’s circulating supply at 9.8B as of press time, although little is known about the price tracker’s update timeline. USTC supply is changing with time because of continuous burns due to the 0.2% burn tax.

This development from CMC comes barely two weeks after reports surfaced, suggesting that the renowned price tracker had begun updating the circulating supply of LUNC to reflect staked tokens and current data, as previously reported by The Crypto Basic.

Over 421M XRP Moved by Whales As XRP Seeks To Recover

0

XRP whales have resumed on-chain activities, as over 421M XRP tokens worth $168M+ were recently moved in just 5 hours.

Amid a seemingly recovering market, XRP has witnessed a reawakening of its whales. A series of seven whale transactions within 5 hours recently put 421.1M XRP tokens valued at $168.4M on the move. The seven transactions between 3 and 7:45 AM on Saturday (UTC) saw the tokens moved between Bitstamp and unknown wallet addresses, as indexed by blockchain tracker Whale Alert.

The first transaction, which saw the movement of 29 million XRP ($11.6M), occurred on November 26, 3:07 (UTC). The transaction appears to have been an internal movement as it involved transferring the tokens from a multisig Bitstamp address to another Bitstamp address.

The second and largest transaction occurred between two unidentified wallets only four hours later. A whopping 162.5M XRP valued at $65.1M was moved between the two unknown wallets on November 26, 6:57 (UTC). Though unidentified, the recipient wallet immediately offloaded the 162.5M XRP tokens in a series of 8 successive transfers to Bitstamp and Independent Reserve in 10 minutes, leaving it with a current balance of 100 XRP as of press time.

The next whale transaction followed the previous one less than an hour later. The third transaction involved the two earlier-mentioned Bitstamp wallets from the first movement, as the previous recipient transferred 33.7 XRP ($13.6M) to the multisig Bitstamp wallet on November 26, 7:29 (UTC).

The fourth transaction, which occurred concurrently with the third movement, involved an inflow into Bitstamp, as an unidentified wallet moved 60M XRP valued at $24.2M to a wallet hosted on the Luxembourg-based exchange on November 26, 7:29 (UTC).

Barely a minute later, the 60M XRP ($24.2M) sent to the Bitstamp wallet from the fourth transaction was transferred to another Bitstamp wallet on November 26, 7:30 (UTC) in a fifth transaction. The reason behind this movement remains enigmatic but not uncommon, as The Crypto Basic reported a similar pattern last week.

After four minutes, another whale transaction saw 30M XRP ($12.1M) transferred from an unidentified wallet to a Bitstamp wallet on November 26, 7:34 (UTC), marking the sixth transaction in the series of recently-triggered whale movements. The seventh and most recent transaction involved the movement of 45.9M XRP ($18.6M) in an intra-exchange transfer within Bitstamp on November 26, 7:35 (UTC).

XRP whales appear to be the most active of the bunch, as large transactions such as these are increasingly becoming common on the network regardless of market conditions. The Crypto Basic previously highlighted the movement of 239M XRP in one single transaction by an unknown whale, as 411M+ XRP tokens were cumulatively set in motion.

XRP On a Delicate Position Amid These Whale Transactions

Nevertheless, these recent transactions have occurred at a time when the broader market appears to be recovering from the recent massacre precipitated by the FTX implosion. As the panic wanes, the sell pressure has lessened, providing a foundation for a price reversal.

XRP has not been left out in this recent campaign, as the asset has gained by 7.53% in the past 7 days despite a 2.28% decline in the last 24 hours. Inasmuch as it has successfully conquered the $0.40 zone, its position above the level appears rather delicate as it struggles to hold steady on a fragile support.

Trading at $0.4068 as of press time, XRP’s hope to reclaim the $0.45 milestone is hinged on the sustenance of this current run and updates on Ripple’s lawsuit with the United States SEC especially as it concerns the reply briefs to each other’s Summary Judgement motions on November 30, as recently reported.

Binance Holds Over 87 Trillion Shiba Inu As Reserves

Binance holds nearly $1 billion in Shiba Inu.

Binance reserves per CoinMarketCap data show seven wallets holding over 87 trillion SHIB worth over $816 million in reserves at the time of a screenshot by The Crypto Basic. The wallet balance may change with time.

The largest wallet holds about 56.9 trillion SHIB. Notably, the data from CoinMarketCap shows only wallets with holdings worth more than $100,000. Consequently, the exchange’s total Shiba Inu holdings will likely exceed this value.

The total SHIB value seen by The Crypto Basic represents about 1.2% of Binance’s total crypto holdings, an impressive feat by any yardstick.

As previously reported, Crypto.com, a competing crypto exchange, holds about $558 million in Shiba Inu. Per the report, the exchange holds more SHIB than Ethereum, representing nearly 20% of the exchange’s total reserves. So Binance is holding more SHIB than any other exchange as a reserve.

Notably, the statistic took Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin by surprise. The Ethereum co-founder, while saying he was impressed by SHIB’s market cap, asserted that he did not understand how someone could hold $10 million in Shiba Inu in a perceived jab at the meme coin.

Despite these sentiments, the staggering value of Shiba Inu held by crypto exchanges indicates that the meme coin is still well sought out by retail investors, even with the price of crypto assets declining this year. SHIB is trading 89.2% below its all-time high of $0.00008616, formed in October last year, per CoinGecko data.

While the meme coin may not generate millions in percentage gains for holders this year as it did last year, it bears mentioning that the token has more utility than ever. Remarkably, the project has launched a card collection game this year. In addition, it is working on a Layer 2 solution while actively building its metaverse.

Terra Classic Casino Officially Burns First 1M LUNC

0

The Terra Classic Casino has begun its contribution to the LUNC burn campaign.

Recently-launched gambling platform Terra (Classic) Casino has officially begun its contribution to the Terra Classic (LUNC) burn campaign, as incineration picks up through its attempt to commit to the 0.2% burn rate previously promised to the community.

The betting platform recently updated its commitment to the burning campaign, as it shared its contribution following the incineration of the first 1 million LUNC tokens burnt. The 1M burn attainment was reached after four days of continual incineration. The platform also touted an interesting upcoming event for the community.

“Woo hoo, we’ve just burnt our first million #LUNC.

And in only four days… And there’s a fab surprise coming to

Thanks all who’s helping out,” Terra Casino disclosed in a tweet Friday as it shared a dashboard that revealed a burn achievement of 1,096,015 LUNC.

Speaking on the development, Rex “Rexzy” Harrison, Head of Development at TerraCVita and a prominent Terra community member, expressed his excitement for the casino’s contribution and further highlighted the potential heights the platform could reach from LUNC burns if they get enough support from the community. Rexzy also pointed out that its 1M LUNC burns apply only to on-chain deposits and withdrawals.

“Wow, TerraCasino_io soon got to 1m #LUNC burned, and this is just deposit and withdrawals on the chain.

The more we support them, the more they burn,” Rexzy noted in response to Terra Casino’s previous tweet.

The development has triggered mixed reactions amongst members of the LUNC community, with some applauding the newly-launched platform for its commitment and others criticizing it for the low burn rate and the inability to confirm the veracity of its burn claim on the blockchain. It bears mentioning that its 1,096,015 burn is worth an estimated $176 against prevalent rates. The concerns about transparency were raised on the casino’s first day of operation.

Recall that Rexzy announced the casino launch last Thursday, with TerraCVita confirming that it has the potential of burning up to 26B LUNC in 6 months. Notably, the casino plans to burn 0.2% of all betting volumes about LUNC.

Two days later, Rexzy unveiled the casino as TerraCasino.io, revealing OwlDao – the seventh biggest dApp in the cryptocurrency space – as its partner. Rexzy’s announcement sparked controversy, as another betting platform dubbed TerraCasino.money made accusations, claiming that Rexzy stole their launch and vendor partners, as The Crypto Basic previously reported.
