Bitcoin Records Largest Exchange Outflow Difference in 5 Weeks as Investors Move Funds Off Exchanges

0

More and more, Bitcoin is leaving centralized exchanges.

A general market correction for cryptocurrencies has characterized the last week. During this time, Bitcoin holders (mainly whales) have been moving Bitcoin from exchanges to private wallets. Although there have been some inflows to exchanges as well, the outflow has been more frequent.

Data from Santiment indicates that 25,878 BTC have been moved off exchanges in the last 24 hours alone. This is the largest exchange outflow difference recorded in the previous five weeks, suggesting that a progressive increase in Bitcoin outflows is being witnessed on the network, but what does this mean for the digital asset and those holding or trading it?

Outflow spikes lead to price rises.

The good thing about Bitcoin is that it leaves patterns for those interested to read, understand, and predict price behaviors in the future. In the past, BTC outflow from exchanges usually led to price rises. This is shown in the chart below, where two outflow spikes led to 24% and 26% price increases, respectively.

Santiment’s data suggests that this may be the case this time as well, provided that the pattern holds for the next few days. If that is the case, we should expect the asset’s price to rise significantly in the coming days despite the current stagnation seen at around $40,000. The only requirement now is for the pattern to be sustained, which cannot be guaranteed as investors decide the market’s direction with their actions.

How Bitcoin is faring

Bitcoin has not experienced any significant volatility since the correction on 11 April. After dropping below $40,000, a brief relief rally took the price to $41,000 again, but it has not been able to grow past that.

At the moment, “Things aren’t looking good for Bitcoin, but bears can’t celebrate until a weekly close below $37,600,” analyst Nebraskangooner tweeted, as the daily chart shows a close with a bearish engulfing candle. However, if the weekly candle closes above $37,600, the analyst says Bitcoin may bounce from here.

Ripple Enthusiasts Stunned as SEC Says It Will Not Seek Additional Discovery.

The Ripple (XRP) community was in shock yesterday after the SEC disclosed that it does not seek to take additional discoveries at this time. This comes after the court requested that the SEC state its position on the additional discovery by April 15, 2022.

“Pursuant to this court’s March 23 order and after the meeting and conferring with Individual Defendants on April 14, 2022, the Securities and Exchange Commission respectfully informs the court that the SEC does not seek to take any additional discovery at this time,” excerpts of the agency’s recent letter to the New York Southern District Court read.

However, while the security agency will not currently be taking additional discovery, it stated in the letter that both the SEC and the Individual Defendants may decide to take discovery limited to disgorgement issues whenever necessary.

SEC Decides Not to Embark on Any Delay

Recall that the SEC has been accused of employing delay tactics to drag the lawsuit as far as possible in order to frustrate Ripple into negotiating a settlement in its favor.

The securities agency had requested time extensions to respond to issues on numerous occasions, even on the simplest of issues.

While many followers of the lawsuit expected the SEC to seek additional discovery, the Securities and Exchange Commission did the exact opposite.

Ripple Enthusiasts Stunned

The news shocked many Ripple enthusiasts who have followed the case since the blockchain company was charged for conducting unregistered securities offerings in the United States.

Many Ripple enthusiasts have taken to various social media platforms to express their surprise about the SEC’s decision not to take additional discovery.

Attorney Jeremy Hogan, a partner at Hogan & Hogan law firm, noted on Twitter that he was surprised by the SEC’s actions, which is a good thing and a major win for Ripple given the consistency of the agency’s delay efforts.

“The only remaining areas of delay are the appeal of the Hinman emails and in general just scheduling. The SEC discovery is complete and that’s a big step forward,” he added.

With the SEC’s additional discovery settled, the Ripple community is eager to know the details of the Joint Proposed Scheduling Order, which is due on April 22, 2022.

Biden Taps Ex Ripple Adviser for Federal Reserve Supervision.

The Biden administration has nominated a former Ripple advisor Michael Barr as Vice-Chair of Supervision at the federal reserves. The Law professor and former Obama administration official will be replacing the former nominee, Sarah Bloom Raskin who failed to win Senate confirmation.

The new nominee who is the current Dean of the public policy school at the University of Michigan was a top contender nominated for the office of the comptroller of the currency but could not succeed. This time however, he has a good chance of securing the new position.

President Biden declares support for Barr

Although he is yet to face the senate for screening, Barr already has president Biden’s support who described him as “a qualified candidate who would bring years of experience to the job.” Biden also says that Barr has a wide support base in the political space and he also promised to get Barr through his first vote as soon as possible.

Similarly, the Chair of the Senate committee on banking Senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat said he will support Barr for the position.

“I will support this key nominee, and I strongly urge my Republican colleagues to abandon their old playbook of personal attacks and demagoguery.”

Also, Ian Katz, the managing director at Capital Alpha said Barr’s chance of getting the position is placed at 60%. “Barr is seen by many as more moderate than Sarah Bloom Raskin,” Katz wrote in a note.

Barr’s nomination good for crypto

The crypto industry in the U.S has faced a lot of hurdles, most of which have been regulatory. The government nominating people who have been in crypto like Barr could be good for the industry as it strives to enter the mainstream.

Because of such nominees, the Biden administration is now working towards bringing about a proper regulatory framework for crypto, which will go a long way in ensuring that the industry experiences healthy growth in the country.

U.S Pledges $5 Million For Info On North Korean Cyber Operations Following Ronin Network Hack

0

U.S State Department has announced a reward of up to $5M For Info on Ronin Network Hack.

The U.S State Department has announced a reward of up to $5 million to anyone with information on North Korean Cyber operations following the hack of Ronin Network.

The reward is offered by the department’s Justice program and will reward those with information on North Korean activities aimed at undermining cybersecurity for the benefit of North Korea’s capital city, Pyongyang. This includes financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges.

The reward also covers the information on “North Korean digital operations that help keep the regime afloat and fund its weapons programs” as well as those who on behalf of North Korea “knowingly engages in significant activities undermining cybersecurity through the use of computer networks or systems against foreign persons, governments, or other entities”

The Ronin hack

Ronin Network was hacked on 23 March 2022 when the platform was emptied of funds. A total of $400 million of funds belonging to customers playing the Axie Infinity game was stolen in the hack that the game had to pay back. The FBI blamed the hack on the North Korean state-backed hacking group Lazarus which is notorious for carrying out hacks on behalf of the country.

“Through our investigation we were able to confirm Lazarus Group and APT38, cyber actors associated with the DPRK, are responsible for the theft of $620 million in Ethereum reported on March 29th,” an official statement released by the department said.

As a result, the Treasury Department has also imposed sanctions on Lazarus for its long-standing reputation of using heists to raise funds for PyonGyang. Other hacks the group is suspected of carrying out in the past include the 2014 hack on Sony Pictures and the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attacks.

There is more to Crypto-related hacks

Before now, hacks on crypto-related networks like Ronin were only seen as activities of people just trying to steal crypto. This reward offer reveals that there is more to crypto hacks than meets the eye.

Several hacks, mostly on cryptocurrency exchanges have been traced to Korean hackers who have raised millions of dollars to support the country’s weapons program. This necessitates tightening the security of crypto exchanges to prevent such hacks or crypto will be blamed for the illegal weapons in the end.

Weak Bitcoin Miners Jittery Over Plunging BTC Hash Price

The falling Bitcoin hash price may force weaker miners to unplug.

Weak Bitcoin (BTC) miners are staring at an uncertain future. That’s according to Dylan LeClair, the senior analyst at UTXOmgmt.

Senior Analyst Mr. LeClair suggested that the miners had to contend with dropping hash prices in a Twitter post. That’s happening at a time when the BTC hash rate is increasing following the consolidation of its prices.

The hash price is the ratio of the miner’s income over the hashing rate. Higher hashing prices denote increased profitability for the miners. That, in turn, incentivizes them to continue mining.

What Next for Weak Miners?

LeClair holds that the situation may cause weak miners to unplug. Alternatively, they may have to migrate to more efficient energy options. Migration would be a last-ditch effort to bring mining costs to profitable levels.

Again LeClair avers that the BTC hash rate is at its highest now. He attributes this rise to the market correcting itself post the Chinese crypto crackdown.

That crackdown saw the BTC hash rate drop significantly as Chinese concerns switched off their operations. But many are coming back to life after setting up in crypto-friendly regions. Their re-entry into the mining space has seen the fortunes of small players in particular dwindle.

Crypto-Twitter’s Reaction

Leclair’s comments drew swift reactions from crypto Twitter. A Twitter user Hodlpants isn’t enthused by the development. He holds that that’s a trend BTC lovers wouldn’t want to see in the long term as it disincentivizes miners from securing the network.

On the other hand, another user Evo sees it as a positive development. He argued that the weaker miners would seek renewable energy sources. The BTC industry is fighting perceptions that it is environmentally unfriendly. Thus such a move would be one way of endearing itself to the crypto’s opposers.

One other user, N8DOGE, fears BTC’s decentralization stance. He opines that if the miners fail to find alternative cheap energy sources, they’ll remain unplugged. That would then lead to a higher degree of miner centralization.

BTC’s Hash Price Has Been Declining

According to Glassnode’s data, BTC mining price has been declining consistently. That’s because the king crypto’s mining difficulty has also progressively increased.

Increases in the hashing rate favor bigger miners over smaller ones. That’s because they can deploy faster and better-equipped mining rigs. Thus they can maintain their level of profitability. The reverse is true for small-scale miners.

Bitcoin Proponent Elon Musk Says There Is A “Plan B” If His Twitter Bid Is Rejected

Bitcoin Proponent Elon Musk Says There Is A “Plan B” If His Twitter Bid Is Rejected.

Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of American electric car company Tesla, said at a TED event in Vancouver that he has a plan B if his offer to acquire 100% of Twitter is rejected.

The billionaire cryptocurrency investor, who failed to give any details about its upcoming plan should his offer be rejected, seems to have made adequate preparations should he receive a negative response from the Twitter board.

Musk’s Twitter Bid

Yesterday, Musk announced that he has made a bid of $41.39 billion to acquire 100% stake of the popular microblogging platform, offering $54.20 per share.

Musk, who is also a shareholder in the social media company, noted that Twitter will not be able to achieve its societal goals of promoting free speech under current circumstances, and as such he is opting to change the situation.

He stated that if his bid of $41.39 billion is accepted, he would take the company private to allow freedom of speech.

While Musk considers his proposal his best and last offer, he concluded that if it is rejected, he would be forced to reconsider his investment in the company.

What is Musk’s Plan B Option?

Aside from his last statement that it seemed like the billionaire investor may dump his over 9% stake of the company’s shares in the market, Musk seems to have more plans up his sleeves as disclosed in a recent interview.

“There is [a Plan B],” Musk said. When asked to shed more light about his “Plan B,” Musk noted that he would do so some other time.

Possible Route Musk Could Take

It is worth noting that Musk hinted earlier this month that he would be developing a decentralized social media platform that would support freedom of speech.

The Tesla owner also hinted at the possibility of a new platform supporting popular memecoin Dogecoin (DOGE), which users can use to tip content creators.

With Musk already considering developing a decentralized social media platform, Charles Hoskinson, the CEO and co-founder of Input Output Global (IOG), requested that they both join forces to create the platform if the Tesla boss’ Twitter bid is rejected.
